I was only two years old when I saw Star Wars, but I can still remember seeing that movie with my family at our local drive-in theater. (Remember those?) The two scenes in the film that I most vividly remember from the time were the opening Star Destroyer chase, and the part where R2-D2 was captured by the Jawas. Those things really scared the Hell out of me, leaping out from behind the rocks, and seeming to "kill" R2-D2. Needless to say, Artoo survived, and so did I.
From the start, Star Wars has continually offered me one important thing: A galaxy big enough to hold my imagination. I can't even begin to remember the hours I spent playing with the Kenner figures and looking through the Marvel comics. And who didn't make-believe that they were taking part in that galaxy far, far away? I was always my "childhood hero", Luke Skywalker, dueling my sister with those glowing, inflatable toy lightsabers. If you think those things couldn't cause bruises.... The greatest weapons, the greatest heroes, the greatest villian. Star Wars remains part of me that has never grown up, and has allowed me a chance to continually look towards the horizon, much as Luke once did, and dream of far-off adventures in faraway places.
As for the movie itself, it has been a film loved by several generations since its original release in 1977, and continues to capture new generations of viewers. The American Film Institute listed Star Wars as #15 in the "100 America's Greatest Movies", and continues to rank high among the Internet Movie Database Top 250.
