Name: Barabas | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Gender/Age: female, 20
BACK to Alabaster Folk | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Rank/Craft: Weyrbred, Journeywoman Fishercraft (river fishing), Candidate
Location: Alabaster Weyrhold
Dragon: BROWN Eropath from Dark Moon
Relatives/Family: none around
Physical Description: 5'3", 100, very skinny but strong considering. Fair skin that tans well, light brown hair that is kept short, that curls wildly. Light green-hazel eyes. A long face with small features, more plain than pretty but definitely not anything less than cute. Wears mostly hide clothing, and usually in a man's style (she has NEVER been known to wear a dress, not even at a Gather). Has a soft, light voice, but uses her intonation to convey when she really needs to be heard.
Emotional/Mental Description: sharp tongued as well as sharp witted. She loves puns and jokes of that sort, and is educated enough that she catches on quickly to Harper's games. She usually tries things that other girls or women wouldn't, for fear of being seen as too "manly", including her craft. She enjoys being outside and loves to play games in the woods -- It would be a fardling shame if those woods were to be destroyed by Thread. She is usually private about her sexuality, but she is a bit more attracted to women than men, and is rather shy about it.
Skills: is an adept fisherwoman, can string nets and line expertly, her hands are quite well suited to the work and are strong. She can identify different fish and animals at a distance, some by the sounds they make (or their wake, if fish). She is as good a huntress as she is fisher, and can make her own clothing from the hides of her kills as well. She has a quick imagination, and though she could become a harper with her ability to string yarns she prefers to stick with stringing nets.
History: born elsewhere but in a weyr, and to two dragon riders. She was transferred to Alabaster but since there were no clutches immediately available when she was younger she stuck it out as a fisher Fostered by a family near the Hold. Now that she is old enough and there are eggs on the Alabaster sands, she is happy to finally get a chance to ride against the Thread.
Notes and Special Information: if Barabas Impresses, she will shorten her name and elide it to Bar'b. Though she is female, she is of the type who could Impress a brown, it has been known to happen.
Pets/Hobbies/Posessions: Barabas keeps collections of harpers stories and loves to visit the Hold where all the Harpers and artists keep their colorful wares. She loves tapestries and decorates her weyr with them, changing them constantly but rarely giving any away or selling them.

"Bring them up," called a voice from outside the Weyrhold building. Alabaster was barely waking up when Barabas had come back from her last fishing trip. She lugged a barrel of fish behind her on a small rolling cart, but it was hard going up hill to the courtyard. She called out again to her companions on the boat, "bring it up so they can see it!" The pair of dolphineers on the small boat relayed the message to their dolphin friends, who chittered and dove below. Then, shortly, they came back up with a large metal object. "It's too heavy for them to keep it here," one of the dolphineers said. "Then just drag it onto the shore! I've got to get this fish into the cold stores before it starts to reek!" "You mean reek even more than it does, Barabas?" Said Cha'z, startling the woman. "That's what I mean, bronze rider... Help me with it!" "Must be careful not to wake Unayth, he's very fond of fish..." "And here's a barrel full!" Barabas laughed. "They found something below the ship, this morning. The shipfish are bringing it in." "So I saw, what was it?" "I don't know yet. But I think the smithcrafters might be interested in it." "Shall I have them come down?" Barabas looked at the dark skinned man, and then at the brightening sky. "Yes, it's getting late in the morning! They need to be up!" "Barabas, it's barely dawn..." Cha'z groaned. "You and your fisherman friends are just a little too eager for most of us." "They might miss something," she said of the engineers. "And it won't be easy to keep floating, so they need all the help they can get." Once they had finished getting the barrel stuck in the cold room, and a drudge had begun the process of salting and cutting them, Cha'z and Barabas walked outside again. Barabas noted with distaste that she smelled greatly of fish and the sea. "I need to clean off, I'll be back later." She sanded herself until her hands were practically raw, but finally got the smell out of her hair and skin. She left her clothing for the wash. Then, on her way back outside after changing she was pulled up short by the Lord Holder! "This thing you've found, it's a marvel!" His pale face was happy, and he looked chipper for this time of the morning, far contrary to most of the inhabitants. "And I've something to show you, too. The search rider from Dark Moon Weyr has come. I want you to greet his dragon." Barabas looked suspiciously at the Lord Holder. "Now, I'm a fishcrafter, Engell, not a--" "Leave that to the rider and his dragon to decide, won't you?" They walked down and soon a brown dragon came into view. He turned his great dark nose toward Barabas and at first she thought he was smelling her over because she hadn't gotten the fishy smell out of her hair! But then, a voice came into her head. You will ride! Gather your things, and come with us to the weyr. And with that, Barabas was searched! Engell looked proud of her, almost as if she were his own daughter going out. "I will take care of the fishcrafters, for you," he indicated, "they won't go short handed." She thanked the Lord Holder, and got onto the brown, to fly to DarkMoon! |

"Its all right if we stay a little longer, right?" Barabas asked of the weyrwoman. "I understand that there aren't a lot of candidates around... But would it be okay if we stayed a bit longer?" The weyrwoman sighed, and the golden dragon protecting her clutch surprisingly okayed the candidate's request. There turned out to be a good reason behind this! For only five minutes later, some of the harder, oldest eggs started shaking! With wide eyes, Barabas approached one. Several other candidates already had their early-hatched dragonets! Then, a strong, low growl came from within the shell, startling Barabas. Then, suddenly, she wasn't standing next to an egg, but a halo of shards and a healthy brown dragon! I am here! I am Eropath! You must find food for me, B'arb, I know that you will be able to help me! With tears in her eyes, the new rider embraced the brown and laughed. "Of course we'll find you some food!" Later, after more than half a turn of training, B'arb and Eropath began to fly, and learned to between. Only after this point were they allowed to return to Alabaster Weyrhold to mingle with their new wing partners! |

We will fly well with these others, Eropath bespoke. "The wing is strong but we'll make it stronger, won't we?" B'arb said, with a smile. "Now, let's get some of those fish!" I love fishing as much as you do, my rider! I will bring back a big one! Big enough for you and all the riders in the Cherry wing! |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Eropath has attempted to fly in mating flights, one at Dark Moon, which he did not win. However now they are at the Healing Den's Cross Gender Frenzy, where they will certainly find mates -- for both of them!
