Baits

There are different types of fish baits which you can used to fish in Singapore. To name a few, there are prawns, sea worms, fish meat etc.

Live Prawns

Live prawns are more preferred among fishermen because it is the favorite food of most fishes. But to use live prawns as bait is very troublesome because We had to keep the prawns alive. Often I saw people uses starfoam box to contain them and a pump to keep them alive. You can buy live prawns at certain places. But you cannot find it in our wet market. Changi village have a lot of fishing shops that sell live prawns and other baits too. If you find Chaingi is too far away, I suggest you look around your neighbour for seafood supplier. They sometime do sell live prawns.

Prawns are easily lost through casting. There is only one way to hook a prawn. Because you want the prawn to be alive after you cast out the line. So that the movement of the prawn can attract fishes. You hook the prawns at its tail. That's it. It will keep the prawns alive and not easily lost due to casting.

How to Hook a Prawn:

Ragworm or "Sarong" worm

Ragworm can be bought or catch. If you want to save the trouble of looking for your own bait. I recommend you to buy it from fishing shop at changi or beach road. If you want totry to enjoy the excitment of catching you own bait. Here are some information about getting your own worm.

First, you have to buy a spade or "changkul". You will find sea worms at low tides only. So when you are going fishing and prepare to get your own bait, I do suggest that you come to the beach earlier. At low tide, you will notice that they are strange looking seaweed. If the seaweed is attach to the seabed, then it is highly likely there is a Sarong below. Do not use anything to touch it, don't try to pull the whole thing out, it will surely break into half and this will cause the sea worm to escape down to the sand once it detect any minor movement.

If you take a closer look at the seaweed, you find that it is in a shape of a tube attach to the seafloor. That is the house of the sea worms. You have to use the spake to dig around the sea worm trying not to disturbed it. Then at the last moment, dig out the whole junk of sand. As you remove the mud.

You find the home of the Ragworm shape like a long tube cocoon with two openings. Try to suqeeze from one end and slowly move upwards. The Ragworms will be forced to come out of it's home.

But don't try to remove the ragworm as it can survice longer in the cocoon. You can store the Ragworm in its home until the next day.

If you want to remove the ragworm from its home. Try queezing from one end and work slowly up. The Ragworms should pop out from the other end. But you must be careful when you handle Ragworms as it can bite. However the bite is non-venomous.

Fish meat

Fish meat is also a good bait, but the fish meat is easily lost. You must be very careful in tieing the bait to the hook. You can use sewing threat to secure the bait.

Squid

Squid is the most cheap and easy to find bait. You can buy it at supermarket or wet market. Squid is the best bait when its at most smelly time. This will attract fishes.
