Terms you will hear when visiting and what they mean
Apnea of Prematurity
Cessation of breathing. Premature babies will often "forget" to breathe until they grow out of their prematurity.
Bilirubin
A pigment produced when the liver processes waste products. A high bilirubin level causes yellowing of the skin. A baby with jaundice has a high bilirubin count.
Bradycardia
A slowness of the heart beat.
Caffeine
Works as a steroid for babies by helping them not forget to breathe
CC's
Cubic centimeters. 30 cc's = 1 fluid ounce.
CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure)(long prongs)
Reminds baby to breathe by forcing air in the nose.
Diuretics
Given to babies when they have edema to help them get rid of the excess fluids they retain.
DSAT
When the oxygen in the blood becomes lower than normal

Edema
When the babies retain excess fluids and can't get rid of them, causing the baby to appear puffy.
Fe
If you see this on your baby's medicine chart it just means they are giving your baby iron.
Fortif

An additive that boosts the calories per ounce of breast milk, given to babies to help them gain weight.

Gavage Feed
ing
A tube is placed wither through the baby's nose or in its mouth, down its throat to its tummy. Milk or formula can then be given to the baby through the tube.

When a baby is gavage fed, the nurses or doctors may use a syringe to see if any undigested milk remains in the baby's stomac

A medicine that is given to preemies for reflux

Vent
Short for ventilator, a machine that helps a baby breathe, 21% being the lowest setting which means your baby is breathing room air and the higher the setting the more concentrated the oxygen.
