Guitar Building and Design
Back
This is an electric guitar of my original design that I hand carved from a solid piece of wood.  It is the first guitar I have made as well as my first attempt at wood carving.   I think I will be making more creative and "artsy" guitars in the future, but currently I don't have the facilities or equipment to do woodworking.

This guitar is made of Poplar, and is stained to appear as if two differnt wood types are intertwined on the body.  The wood is somewhat soft, so to make it more durable I coated it in two caots of fiberglass resin, and clear-coated it with Polyurithane. The fiberglass does not seem to have effected the sound.  I wanted a Bluesy, Jazzy sound, so I installed a Seymour Duncan Jazz Model pick-up in the neck position, and a Seymour Duncan Jeff Beck Model pick-up in the bridge position. The bottons and pick-up trim are made of wood as well.  The volume and tone knobs feature hidden push/pull switches to switch between double and single coils in the pick-ups, and a three way swich selects the pick-ups.  I installed a hard-tail Strat style bridge, although  I think a "tune-o-matic" style might have looked better.  I carved the headstock on a blank  neck that was previously on a "strat" style guitar.  The next time I build a guitar, I will make the neck as well, since I wanted a solid trough neck rather than a bolt-on one.

It plays well and sounds great!  I had a lot of fun making this guitar, and music is my other passion besides art, so this was a great way to merge the two areas of my greatest interest. Maybe guitars will be another form of artwork I will explore in the future, and as requests come in.  If you would like more information, call me or email me.
