This was a large (4 ft x 6 ft) Acrylic painting I did of a great World War II hero, Marion E. Carl. He was the first Marine Corps Ace, the first Marine Corps Helicopter pilot, and a test pilot who flew over 275 different types of aircraft. It just so happens that he was from Hubbard, Oregon, which is about 25 miles away from where I grew up. After reading his biography, I felt compelled to do something special for an upcoming project, the rededication of our Commanding General's building at MCAS Cherry Point, NC as "MajGen Marion E. Carl Hall". I donated this piece to the Air Station and it was unveiled during the Rededication Ceremony by Marion Carl's son, Bruce Carl, and myself. This piece is on permanent display and is the centerpiece of the building. I was originally tasked to create an exhibit of images to commemorate Marion Carl. After several months of research, I led the project of this exhibit. I obtained all of the imagery and historical facts, and printed, matted and framed all of the other images which are now displayed in the Foyer area of that building. Also, the entire room was repainted to compliment the painting. |
