The Energia booster was an historic demonstration that heavy payloads can be orbited cheaply.  Glaser’s basic idea was thus shown to be much more likely to be feasible. And his basic idea is something like a catchy melody that invites others to think of new variations or new arrangements. The interested reader may want to spend a little time researching Glaser on the internet where there's a good deal of material.
In my opinion, there exists some special combination of the ideas that have been or could be attached to Glaser’s concept—a special combination that could be made to function politically, technically, and commercially. That would then provide a basis for solving global warming.
But “practical” individuals in politics and business have chosen to forget what happened at the end of the Cold War. They are adding to the misfortunes of our battered planet by continuing to try to treat space colonization as science fiction.
Thus, in 2007 the Cold War was being foolishly reenacted. It had just been moved south and east; missiles built by Hezbollah, Iran, and North Korea had taken the spotlight from Soviet ICBMS.
And global warming wasn’t being dealt with effectively either. A major US city was trying to rebuild from destruction caused by new planetary energy dynamics.
While BP was doing a lot of “green” public relations, they were making their actual money by drilling for oil. It seemed they intended to continue doing so for the foreseeable future.
One had the impression that they thought the “practical” thing was to burn fossil fuels down to the last drop of oil and the last lump of coal. If they are allowed to do that, increased ethanol usage and other measures won’t prevent global warming
My impression is that business people in Chicago and Indianapolis have thought that Glaser’s ideas would be dangerous to their profits. They seem to feel that way even though, in a best-case scenario, Glaser’s solar power satellites wouldn't significantly impact the energy market for at least twenty-five years. So my position that SSP is more than science fiction has apparently made me seem "dangerous" to some in the oil business. To them, I may have been seen as "radical" or "crazy." Money talks and money may have convinced other Midwest business people and, perhaps, some public officials, as well that I was "dangerous."
While perception isn’t always the same thing as reality, perception is nevertheless significant. The perception or representation of me by some as a dangerous social malcontent is and has been somewhat effective.
That may explain why I've been stalked and harassed, and not allowed the privacy of a modest studio apartment in Irvington.
