Stena Discovery HSS Worlds Lagest High Speed Ferry
Parkeston Quay ( now called Hawich Internatioal Port ) was built in 1883 with ferry services to Rotterdam, Antwerp and Esbjerg operated by GER and United Steamship co.

In 1893 The Hook of Holland terminal was opened and the Hawich to Hoek van Holland was started.

In 1963 The "Avalon" the last steamship for this route was delivered and in 1964 Englands first ro-ro car ferry for both DFDS and Harwich-Hook  was started. In 1968 the ferry "St George entered service on the Harwich-Hook route.

The  St Edmund was launched in 1973 (Harwich-Hook), but was requisitioned by the MoD in 1982 for service in the Falklands war.

In November 1985 H.M. Queen of the Netherlands launched the Koningin Beatrix  with  the words Hook-Harwich on her starboard side and Hoek-Harwich on the port side. After some
problems with berthing she entered service in April 1986 as one of the first cruise ferries. With room for up to 2100 passengers and 485 cars with service speed of 21knots.

In 1997 after a £12 million redevelopment prodject for shoreside improvements and special berth the High Speed Ferry service to Hoek van Holland was started with the Stena Discovery. With top speeds over 40 knots.

In 1998 Princess of Scandinavia closed the DFDS Gothenburg passenger service.

In 2002 DFDS Hamburg service was switched to Cuxhaven.

In 2003 The new Stena Superferries (see photos below) were delivered for Harwich - Hoek route as stena line fright saw a strong increase in 2003

In 2007 will see the end of the HSS Fast Ferry to Holland. The Superferries Stena Briannica and Stena Hollandica are to be made larger with an extra 52 meters added.
