This was the first match after a long lay off, the under11s had not played a competitive game since Remembrance Day, but they soon where back in the swing. The conditions where very good considering the type of weather we had experienced recently cancelling our last 5 games. The Woolston lads scored first through the biggest 10yr old prop on the pitch, Danny. This young player had an excellent game, he was the Woolston star of the show. The determination of the young lions started to show through with some smart half back play from the most improved female player, Chloe Westhead. Along with some awesome tackling by Abigail Kevill, who was also awarded the Coaches Top Tackler at the after match presentation. The first Try of a hat trick came by the way of Candice Brennan and was converted in fine style by Nathan Sweeney. George Winstanly converted the next try scored by Edward Shaw, as Nathan Sweeney put him through with a superb grubber kick. At half time the Score stood at 12 points to 14 in favour of the Woolston Lads. Ten minutes into the second half Candice scored her second try, and six minutes later she scored her hat trick. George Winstanly kicked his second conversion. Danny from Woolston received a sweet pass from his halfback and crashed over the line putting his team back in front. Within a few moments Abigail showed a true Captains role, she dodged and weaved through the opposition line to level the scores. Most spectators thought a draw would be a fair result but both teams had other thoughts. With approximately 5 minuets to go both teams played out some exciting Rugby League with a series of well place kicks over the top of the defensive line by Nathan and a series of text book tackles by the Lions. Then with the Ref’s arm raised to check the time and the whistle in his mouth, Danny the Woolston prop crashed over the line and as the ball hit the ground the ref blew his whistle, final score 32 points to 26 in favour of Woolston. Young Danny Lynch of the Lions made an outstanding contribution and was awarded the most improved male player by a very impressed Lions Coach – Mick McGuire standing in for coach Dave Brennan. He said that, “The after match awards had been a difficult decision to make as overall the team performed brilliantly, I was proud of each and every one of them”. The general census of opinion was an excellent game played in the true spirit of Rugby League with a very fair referee.
