Bibliography

For this project, I consulted a wide range of secondary literature focusing on issues like Christian missions, Christianity in China, Orientalism, imperialism, anthropology, and museums.  Primary sources included volumes of the Journal of the West China Border Research Society, available at the library of Duke University in Durham, NC; diaries recording Graham’s activities during collecting expeditions, held by the Smithsonian Institution; and a wealth of mission-related materials (reports, letters, news clippings) found in the archives of the American Baptist Historical Society in Valley Forge, PA.
