Prayer and the Great Fijian FLOOD It was about 1979, there were two Christian outreach homes in Suva, Fiji. I and another French Canadian sister, the pioneers there had a down-stairs apartment in a hallowed out narrow valley of the city. And there was another home with a married couple and a couple of other disciples. The wife came over to our apartment and was having study time, and said she would watch over things as we went to the movies. The movie house was a fair distance away and we watched through the whole three hour show, unaware that there had been a torrential downpour while we were inside. And the rain was still really coming down, as we headed hurriedly towards home. Our apartment had flooded previously when such big rains came. This was a type of blessing in disguise, because this meant we no longer had to pay rent to the landlord until he fixed it or stopped the rains. Ha.. We would just clean up the house with Lysol if ever it flooded and go back to living close to town as always. What a great deal and heaven-sent flooding we figured. Of course, the waters would never go above a foot. So all we ever did before was just put everything up on the counters and tables. The wife knew this, so surely she would have just put things up, like we had done before. Surely she will have done this…we kept reassuring ourselves as we raced home. On arrival…. YES the little gully of beautiful trees and grasses was again flooded and now the waters were high enough that it was now going over the road and not through the too-small of a culvert pipe. Our apartment was again flooded !! We trudged down the slippery slopes and entered our apartment. And there in the kitchen on top of the table was our sister in the Lord with tears in her eyes. Our things were totally drenched, our papers were floating on the waters and everything was a total disaster. Our dear sister in the Lord, thought she could stop the flood by praying. She said, she prayed and prayed for the rain to stop. But the waters came up inch by inch. So she prayed some more with even more intensity and yet the waters came up. It took hours before the water reached our doorsteps, but she says she just still had to try and pray some more. But she never heard from the Lord because she was too busy praying to the Lord or telling the Lord what to do. So with tears in her eyes, she retreated to the table as it was too late to put everything on top of the closets and sinks. She was so sorry, but sorry didn’t replace our papers and notes and studies. The rest could be sort of dried out, but at least we learned a lesson that rainy day. So without mentioning it to her, this sister knew exactly what she had done wrong. She should have listened to the Lord not just prayed to the Lord. For most of the time we won't be able to change NATURE (although there are times we might have to pray for such miracles which aren't really miracles because Our LORD is the MASTER of the waves and the wind and ALL THINGS are under his command.) But we can avoid His judgments by doing what He tells us to do as we are walking or working or fleeing. We can't always just sit and pray, but be prayed up to date before a crisis happens. Because if we wait to pray in the middle of a crisis or in the start of the Tribulation, it will be too late. For this was the testimony of the GREAT FIJIAN FLOOD at least in our opinion Jay |
