    I left the capital Kinshasa and made my way to Zambia. I just crested the escarpment in the top photo. The picture of the Congo River on the right was taken from the highest elevation in the area. My first night out of Kinshasa was spent here in a small classroom adjacent to the Catholic mission.
     As the tour of Zaire unfolded, it became clear the lack of infrastructure that existed. Below is actually a bridge. As I cycled along the main highway (a tractor track), the road ended abrubtly here. I managed to cross the river using the planks.
