    This statue or variations of it can be found through-out many African nations. I believe  it's original intent was to symbolize the freedom from the shackles of European slavery.
     However, in today's terms, I think it also can symbolize the struggle from the shackles of poverty, AIDS, tyranny, or oppression from their own government.
