The Rural Schools of Greene County

Selected photos of Greene County's rural schools, circa. 2003

Following a group presentation in May 2003, an audience member informed me that I was using the wrong photo and address for the former Pleasant Valley, District #41 school. They sent me the address of the school, at its original location, and I took some photos 8-29-03 to share here.

Pleasant Valley, District #41

Pictures of the Pleasant Valley School in the 900 block of East Farm Road 80. 3/4 Mile west of the old Brunson's Store. This is next to the Pleasant Valley Church. Currently used as a home. Effective January 1951, became part of Pleasant View R-I. Reorganized into Springfield District R-XII in April, 1968.

A mystery still remains about this building that stands behind the home at 5671 N. Farm Road 159 (about 1/4 mile west of the address described above. Everything about this building suggests is was a former school house but at this point its origin is in question since school alumni have identified the school above as their Pleasant Valley School.

COLORED SCHOOL DISTRICT #64 Information provided by Gina S. Powell, Center for Archaeological Research, SMSU Sent July 28, 2004 "I was researching the "Colored School" shown on the 1904 Greene County plat map near Water Valley Mill. It has been variously called "New Hope" school (Mable Taylor, Springfield Magazine 1984) and "Jarrett School (Lederer 1986, Many Thousand Gone). It is obviously not the same New Hope school that you cite being near Fruitland. The school is in the same district as the Grandview white school (District 64) and the 1913-1914 teacher's term report is on file at the Greene County Archieves. It is clearly the right school because many of the children's names (Herndon, Jarrett, Trout) match local family names cited by Taylor and Rayl (2000, Union Campground Newsletter).
