DBU STUDENT SUGGESTS COLLEGE REPUBLICANS SHOULD BE RENAMED
To the DBU Snipe:
Well in your remarks about voting we find these words "DBU College
Republicans will be ordering the Texas 2004 Primary Voter's Guide from
the Eagle Forum as soon as possible so we have a clue for whom to vote.
Thank you, Chad E. Bales." There are two problematic presupositions
that I find here. One is that as a Christain we have a right and
responsiblity to vote, but that we need to consult the College
Republicans and the Eagle Forum, as if the only way to vote as a
Christian is for the Republican party. Conslut the Eagles Forum, or
the college Republicans then you will know how to vote, this seems
problematic at best. This populist uncritical support of the
Republican party has been the mindset of evnagelicals for a very long time. Even if you don't go as far as the right wing moral majorty takes the issue,
you still seem to be towing that line. Secondly you are voting on
behalf of someone who died to give you the right to vote, not on behalf
of someone who died so that you could unabandondly support the
Republican Party. How are we to know what political party Mr. Bales
affliated himself with. I know that you were just challenging people
to vote because of the price others have paid so that we can vote, but I
think it was a mistake to refer to the College Republicans in the same
paragraph, as if that was our only option. On the surface the support
of the College Republicans or labeling yourself a Republican seems to
be harmless, but can you as a Christain support what they support in its
totality. As Christains are alligence is to Christ and not to the
Republican Party. If you critically think through the issues, and then
find yourself voting for a Republican so be it, but the labeling
systems seems to support a populist anti-intellectual mentality. So I think
the College Republicans should be named the Politically Engaged Christians.
