Dissent from Lane Greer

I really just have a few things that i think it would be great for you to take into consideration.

Commentary on Nov 12 chapel:

Honestly... i'm sure glad our DBU employees don't have to sign the school mission statement because I don't want a school full of rabid baptist profs. My reason being because I'M NOT A BAPTIST. I do agree with most of what baptists believe but i would never, ever, under any circumstance pledge allegience to the baptist beliefe system and would never wear the baptist sign around my neck. I've seen too much pain caused by baptist to ever want to claim to be on. You make all kinds of statements about the DBU bubble but if each and every one of our profs have to sign our mission statement, you aint seen nothin yet. I've had 1 or 2 profs that said stuff i didn't agree with and i liked that. I liked knowing that i was still in the world even though sometimes its hard to see.

Incidentally, DBU profs are required to sign the New Hampshire Baptist Confession, which I've been told predates the confessions currently being fought over. But they do have to sign that one. I had a look at it one time; it's awfully vague; says something like "God created humanity" and leaves plenty of room for theistic evolution, for instance. Profs are also supposed to attend Baptist churches.

Commentary on loud music:

Yes... the music is loud. So is the music of our generation. I accutally let some of my friends listen to the rough copy of the up and coming GlowingHeart cd and they said it was something they would listen to for enjoyment. That's a first. They weren't even DBUers. Also, you have to take into account that of the 170 shows GlowingHeart will do this year, only about 1/3 will be to DBU, about 1/3 will be to churches and 1/3 will be to youth groups. Out of all that I think i'd rather them cater their music to the youth because alot of them arn't saved and loud music is all they know and all they want to listen to. And also, i think you were the one that said the music isn't for us but for the glory of GOD. Another thing is that i've read where you have a problem with some of the lyrics of some of the songs. That's awesome. I agree, and so does Henry. He's changed and axed songs over the years because of inaccuracy. Just talk to him and he'll listen to you.

My dear sir, a CD can be played at any volume one likes, as can the musical style of any generation. If it is the habit, however, of a generation to play music at unsafe levels, it is a habit in which all right-thinking people should not participate, and especially Christians with the explicit commands in Gen. and I Cor. 6:19-20 to take care of their bodies. But here's what would convince me to change my mind and stop complaining about music: if someone tells us the actual, objective decible level of a typical chapel service, and it turns out to be outside of the range designated by doctors as unsafe, I'd probably make a public apology on Snipe and shut up thenceforth.

I kinda like Henry, he's a nice guy, and it doesn't surprise me that he's gotten rid of some songs; I'm glad. Thanks for either telling me, or reminding me; I think Amy or someone may have already told me that, but I can't remember.....

One more thing:

I'm sure you know what you're saying but i just want to redirect a statment you make alot on your site. It's about us giving GOD glory. When you make that statement are we to think that if we didn't give the glory to HIM then HE wouldn't get it. I think we were made in HIS image to reflect back to him the glory HE already possesses. We don't EVER GIVE God glory. HE is all gorious already. We just try to reflect back what is already HIS and move ourselves out of the way.

As for what you said about the glory of God, I think i agree entirely. I'm too tired to think about it and make sure.

I do want you to hear me. I'm not like slamming you or your site, but i really think it would be a great idea for you to do some more research on the speakers or GlowingHeart or on how DBU spends money before you slam them. All you're going to do is to remove yourself from any useful place in the church of GOD. If you're not edifying then what's your purpose. Wouldn't it be better to approach those you don't agree with and those you've slammed over the years and appologize and mend the relationships and then maybe THEY would lisen to what you say about them as opposed to just the student body listening to you and never taking you seriously.

Merely assumptions, Lane. I've talked to many. The best one was Charlie Bass. Actually talks to one as a human being; I loved that guy; I don't recall what he was at the time, a VP of something. I won't tell you who it was who just changed the subject on one issue, and then gave me bad information on another . . . I don't know if he was lying or just pathetically scatter-brained. But I have certainly talked to human beings; I found out that they really don't seem to care. Beleive me, I'd never have said half the stuff I've said on Snipe without having talked to real human beings first; but they let me down, and there was nothing left but the Internet.

As for the students, I've heard many say they take it very seriously. Someone must be taking it seriously or we wouldn't have so many hits on the Chapel updates.

But I think you don't understand the purpose here, Lane. Speaking only for myself, though I'm sure that the Snip at least would agree with me, and definetely the Snoop . . . the purpose is truth. I guess I think it's kind of like the glory of God; people don't have to acknowledge the truth, or change things, for the truth to still be the truth; speaking the truth is an end in itself, even if people don't listen. There's certainly a lesson like unto that to be learned from poor Jeremiah.

Alright, I'm going to come up with a few categories here . . . on the one hand, if the truth is spoken in the proper spirit and people don't listen, my work is done. On the other hand, if truth is spoken in an improper spirit and people don't listen, I'll call myself guilty when I realize it, apologize, and let God deal with the people who didn't listen to the truth improperly spoken. On the other hand, as for research, no single person has enough time. I've certainly done some research on Dennison. That link from the words "his tendency," for instance. If I work with incomplete research, I've done as much as I can because I HAVE NO TIME. Everyone else is requested to fill in the gaps. The entire DBU community has a standing invitiation to correct any and all Snipe site writers. I can only do as much as I have time for; everyone else can do what they can, if they like.
