In his favor...

1. A lot of people say they've gotten a lot out of his class(es).

2. It's amazing the way he knows every student's name. Very kind and respectful of him. Very good of him. In fact, in general he's just a nice guy.

3. He's a good soccer player and gets along well with students in such a context as soccer.

4. All the advice to invest in mutual funds seems to be pretty good advice; I appreciate the advice quite a bit myself.

5. The Snip told me she appreciated the advice on writing. Phrasing your sentences so there was something interesting and catchy in the beginning and the end was a good idea, she said.

6. Awfully good thing of him to have people memorize Proverbs 29:25. The fear of man is a wuss. So irrelevant.

7. Also Phillipians 2:3-4 about regarding others as more important than yourselves. Very important. I think his interpretation of that was spot on.

------------------------

Against him...(these are not necessarily always ranked in order of importance; some are interconnected).

1. Did I misunderstand him, or did I understand him to mean we don't have a sin nature any more if we're Christians? That just doesn't fit the empirical evidence. Oh wait, Scripture over experience ... ok, it doesn't fit that either. This is a badly imbalanced presentation of what theologians call the "already/not yet" principle. We're already saved or whatever. We're not yet perfected. That would leave no room for the sanctification process. That would leave no explanation for the last time you lusted (guys) or gossipped (girls), or whatever way girls sin most often. Lust has gotta be a number-one or -two sin for guys.

2. I don't think he ever bothered to tell his freshmen to read books...bad idea, Lash, bad idea.

3. His vocab memorization techniques probably don't do much damage. I have a good vocab because I read books, though, not because of any other technique. For instance...Resilient, "The Scions of Shannara." Ilk and castigate, "Can Man Live Without God." Catalepsis, bravura, gestalten, "Dune." Anyone noticed the word riven in "The Return of the King?" Bueler?

4. I don't think he ever once told us that prayer is to be a number one priority in a Christian's life.

5. All of these clever ideas for helping a suicidal person have their place. But why didn't Mr. Lash tell us somehting like, "Suicide is very often a cry for love. These people need love." I wanted to comment on that in class, though I never did. I would have just waited for him to tell me I had no experience in helping suicidal people. I'd have said, "Four, and counting!" Now I could say "Five!" Oh...if we count that last person, "Six!" Those of you who can say "Twenty," be sure to lemme know if I'm wrong: dbusnipe@yahoo.com

6. More to follow, pending said complaints, time, and motivation.
