Corporal Chevrons

My War Years is an excerpt from DeLoyd Cooper's autobiography, My First Sixty-four Years.

In the book's Dedication to his five grand children and unborn great grand children he states, "If I say anything that might offend any of you, I want to apologize in advance."

This reflects the consideration that he has for others' feelings.

In his preface to his autobiography he continues, "(I)...was merely going to jot down some things about my world war two experiences, mostly because I thought that some of my grandchildren might wonder what their Grand  Pa did in the big war. I have often wondered about my own grandfather and his civil war service..."

The result is an exciting account of a farm boy who spent his first night away from home with Uncle Sam. His first trip outside of his southern home fighting for his life and our freedom in what would later be recognized as the greatest land battle in history, The Battle of the Bulge.

As a jeep driver for a forward observation team Cpl. Cooper found himself in situations that brought him closer to the enemy than he would have chosen to be, no doubt. Like so many near the forward edge of the lines, he did what was necessary to stay alive. As part of the 275th Armored Field Artillery Battalion, that was to fight a much stronger German Panzer unit in a delaying action.
You should find Cpl Cooper's account exciting, amusing and touching.

He returned to west Alabama, attended the University of Alabama, and went to work serving his fellow workers at Reichhold Chemicals, Inc.,  as Treasurer of the Tuscaloosa Chemical Federal Credit Union, until the company moved from Tuscaloosa.

In his retirement he has been active in the 275th Armored Field Artillery Association, presently serving as the association's historian. He maintains warm, close relationships with many of his war-time friends.

I am thankful for the job that he and his fellow soldiers overseas did for our country. I am also proud that he chose to marry my mother and thankful for the loving home he has given her, my sister, Carolyn, our brother, Ed and me.
