Marpol-Convention

 

1. Within 3 nautical miles of nearest land, all inland waters and from or within 500m of fixed or flooding platforms
you cannot throw anything overboard!

 

2. Within 3-12 nautical miles offshore
you cannot throw overboard paper, crockery, rags, metal, glass, food, plastic, dunnage and lining and packing materials that float.
You can throw overboard paper, crockery, rags, metal, glass and food, etc. provided it is ground to less than 25 mm.

 

3. Within 12-25 nautical miles offshore
you cannot throw overboard plastic, dunnage and lining and packing materials that float.
You can throw overboard paper, crockery, rags, metal, glass, food, etc.

 

4. Outside 25 miles offshore
you cannot throw overboard plastic.
Note: this includes, but is not limited to: synthetic ropes, nets, plastic garbage bags!
Garbage must be disposed of as described in the ship's garbage management plan and details must be kept in the garbage disposal book.

 

5.) In the special areas listed below, it is illegal to discharge garbage of any kind.
(except for food waste, ground to less than 25 mm, which may be discharged beyond 12 nautical miles offshore)

- The Mediterranian Sea area
- The Baltic Sea area
- The Black Sea area
- The Red Sea area
- The Gulfs area
- The North Sea area
- The Antarctic area
- The Wider Carribean area.
