The Shetland Bus | ||||||||||||
The Shetland Bus was a special branch of the British and expatriate Norwegian military forces during WWII. Using fishing boats, which easily blended in with other craft on the coast of occupied Norway, Shetland Islands-based Norwegian agents waged war against the German invaders. The Bus's mission: to help threatened Norwegians escape the Nazis, and to aid the resistance movement in Norway by delivering necessary military supplies, agents, and information. The Shetland Bus missions over the North Sea provided a lifeline that saved the lives of countless Norwegians and inspired countless more. A Shetland Bus fishing boat making its way over the North Sea. The dangers they faced included severe weather and air attack. Once on dry land in Norway, the agents and Norwegian resisters had to contend with the Gestapo. All contact with Germany's enemies was punishable by death. Entire communities were razed in reprisal for resistance activities. | |||||||||||||
