"Hand-to-hand is the basis of all combat...only a fool trusts his life to a weapon". Ninja from "Solid Snake" |

This page is dedicated to the combat arts. The style demonstrated in the pictures below is known as Jail-House-Rock, an extremely rare method of combat developed within the US prison system. According to the foremost authority on Jail-House-Rock, Dennis Newsome, it was created with one goal in mind, to survive. The techniques of the style are intended to be simple and effective. To repel and survive an attack within close quarters against multiple attackers requires defending and counter-attacking within a very limited range and with brutal efficiency. Thus the primary weapons are the elbows and knees. As any experienced Muay Thai kickboxer knows, elbow and knee strikes account for nearly all the knockouts in the ring. A perfect example of this style on film is "Lethal Weapon". In this movie, the characher Martin Riggs played by Mel Gibson engages in hand-to-hand combat with the antagonist played by Gary Busey. Riggs fighing ability consists of the Brazilian martial arts of Capoeira and Gracie Juijitsu, in addition to Jail-House-Rock. The scene took four nights to film. Although my formal training consited of Dux Ryu Ninjitsu, Muay Thai Kickboxing, Kali/Arnis and Wun Hop Kuen Do, my sifu had instructed his students in principles of close combat learned from prison. He emphasized relying on elbow and knee techniques and building from there. |
