HOME AT LAST
by Boz
This was in response to a challenge to write the very last scene of the
last season of Voyager.
Disclaimers: Paramount owns the characters - I’m just trying to show how
they could be treated.

The homecoming had been all that they had expected and more. High highs
and low lows. Now it was almost all over, only the two of them left to
say goodbye to Voyager, their home for so long. It was almost as hard as
the breakup of their family had been. Chakotay knew that Kathryn had
taken it very hard when the reality hit her that they would soon be
spread across half the galaxy, following new paths.
He knew where he would find her and sure enough, she was seated in her
chair on the bridge starting out unseeingly at the blue globe hanging in
the view screen, a sight many of them had thought they would never see
again. She somehow looked small and very vulnerable now the intense
cloak of responsibility was lifted from her shoulders. Two silver tracks
trailed down her face.
He stood, arms loosely at his sides and watched her without speaking.
Slowly her head swiveled around towards him.
"You remember that once we agreed that there was plenty of time?"
He nodded - it was one of the myriad memories he would always have about
this remarkable journey....something that he thought she had forgotten
about years ago.
She stood up and looked directly into his gaze.
"Well...time’s up....."
He looked at her quizzically a little unsure until suddenly he knew he
was reading in her face exactly what she meant. He leaned towards her,
ran his thumb down her face, tracing the track left by the tears, then,
as a huge grin spread across his face, he held his arms wide to her.
One step and she was enfolded in a solid, tender bear hug. For a moment
she tilted her head back and looked at him, an answering grin spreading
across her face.
"Now," she whispered, "now I am truly home.........."
