"As I get older, love is more important than anything," says USS Voyager's Kathryn Janeway, 44
The new editor for Starfleet Happenings, Neelix of the Delta Quadrant's Talaxia, interviewed the hottest new command couple in the 'Fleet, Captain Kathryn Janeway of the USS Voyager and her second-in-command, Commander Chakotay. The happy couple was married shortly after their return to the Alpha Quadrant, on April 19, 2377. (Stardate: 430299.47) Their comments are recorded here, and they also share some of their honeymoon pictures with our lucky readers.
Kathryn Janeway & Chakotay
In their words…
April 19, 2377
KJ
: Chakotay was Starfleet’s worst enemy. I was going after him, into the Alpha Quadrant Badlands in 2371. My orders were very specific about how dangerous he was and how important it was that I capture him and his crew. I had found him and certainly had the better of him and his ship when the Caretaker’s displacement wave swept both our ships and crews into the Delta Quadrant.
Chakotay
: I had absolutely no interest in being captured by Starfleet; I despised all of them! I had heard of Kathryn Janeway, and knew that she was one of their best captains, but I had never met her before. As a Maquis, I forgot the ways of my ancestors on many days; but when I first saw her, I whispered thanks to all the spirits, knowing that yes, there was a God.
KJ
: It was almost instantaneous attraction. I think the Klingons call it Do’ banqt. But he was the head renegade Maquis, a rebel from Trebus, and I had to bring him back to the Federation… preferably alive! Then… we got thrown together in the Delta Quadrant, and I had to make some fast decisions. All of these components conspired against us. Cut to five years later. He’s now the respected first officer on a Starfleet vessel, and my executive officer. We had put off the inevitable between us; but one evening, he finally caught me in the holodeck… in that warm and cozy Sandrine’s bar program of Tom Paris’… and popped the question without any forewarning. After that… well, we felt we had to split our professional lives from our personal ones. It was rather difficult until we got back here on Earth.
Chakotay
: When we did get back, we decided that we wanted a wedding that was very simple and elegant, and we wanted it on Earth. After a little research, we decided that Bora Bora seemed good.
KJ
: I just wanted to be someplace where I could see green and blue and whiff fresh ocean air. We found a lovely 300 year old house with a veranda and a grassy courtyard with a white gazebo overlooking a lagoon. Most of our crew were there, and our dear friend, Tuvok, performed the ceremony. The whole thing took 15 minutes.
Chakotay
: I talked about the moment I saw her, I was in love. She redefined my life completely, and age 45 I never thought that could happen.
KJ
: Afterward we had champagne. Then we had this lovely luncheon on the beach for everyone. I can’t recall what we ate --- just that we had more champagne, and I had some of the most exhilaratingly happy moments of my life.
