Reading is the foundation for all learning

Learning to read is one of the most important - and difficult - tasks a child faces. Fortunately, there are many ways to help them; the easiest, and most overlooked is simply reading aloud to children.

"Reading aloud" means exactly what it says - reading a book out loud. It is an interactive activity. Let the kids look at the illustrations in a picture book while it's being read. Let them ask questions or make comments about the text or illustrations; to adults this is interrupting the story, but to the child, he is creating meaning.

Even toddlers and babies can benefit from being read to; it helps them learn the sounds of language. It also shows how language works. Reading aloud (and even just talking) to small children creates language pathways in the brain which help the child when they learn to speak and eventually read and write.

The purpose of this website is to create awareness for reading aloud to children. To that end, I have compiled a list of recommended picture books, categorized and summarized, as well as chapter books.
