| Chapter 1 (Skirmish)
Birmingham, England off the main road Deirdre Brantford stands alone watching the skirmish in front of her. Gathering up her dress out of the way, she carefully ambles closer to her protector Earl Battersby in midst of a fierce sword fight. Earl is succumbing to a relentless attack, feverishly trying to fight back. Deirdre cried out, “Earl, your dagger.” Earl hears her cry, and manages to use it against his opponent regaining the fight. Deirdre edges closer in worry, wanting to help her friends, but unsure how. On the main road Lord Cyan Barlow Sheriff of Bristol draws his horse to a stop and listens, he hears Deirdre and the skirmish. His men around him pause to listen as well, and Cyan looks at his Sergeant Ashley McGreggory, “A woman amongst fighting can use our help, let’s go.” They head off the road, and follow the noise of the skirmish. Dismounting from their horses, they pause to see what Cyan will do. Uncertain of which side to take, he watches Deirdre trying to avoid the men battling. Ashley said, “I don’t recognize any of them my Lord. Who do we help?” Before Cyan can answer Deirdre has become alarmed; a second man dressed in armor like the others has come to fight against Earl. Putting a hand to her mouth she cries, “No, Earl!” Cyan assessed the situation; Deirdre’s friends have been out numbered, but managed to fight well. He looks at his men, “Go after the men dressed in the same armor, we’ll keep the woman from danger.” Deirdre moved into danger already, she charges at the second man attacking Earl. Shoving him as hard as she can she makes him lose his balance and takes his attention off of Earl still fighting the first man. Deirdre backs off slowly as the man she pushed gets up and looks at her. Unknowingly, another enemy has stalked from behind ready to strike her with his sword, waiting for Deirdre to draw closer. Ashley and Cyan approach first, and as Ashley takes fight against the enemy preparing to strike Deirdre, Cyan moves in front of her to protect her from the man she has pushed. Cyan strikes at the enemy first, without hesitation. It is obvious to him now that they are the guilty party if two of them are taking attack to a woman. Striking down the enemy, Cyan turns his attention back to Deirdre watching in astonishment. She is unaware Ashley and the other enemies fight directly behind her, Cyan grabs her out of the way just as the enemy struggles to shove Ashley backward on top of her. The enemy’s sword coming closely to Deirdre’s head, she gasps. Cyan briefly turns his attention to her, “Stay behind me, I’ll keep you free from harm, and see you to safety.” Deirdre looks around noticing they are in the middle of the skirmish now, Cyan turns his attention to the men in the same armor. One is approaching, and he prepares to fight. Deirdre watches carefully trying to find Earl in the fighting, also weary of the battles around her. Cyan annihilated the enemy and then took Deirdre’s arm, “This way.” As he leads her closer to a safe area, another enemy in the identical armor approaches. Cyan takes fight, and again Deirdre looks for Earl. Suddenly she notices him fighting the same enemy near the edge of the bluff. Alarmed she cries, “No! Earl needs help!” Cyan hears her, but is in mid battle with the enemy, he does not see Deirdre heading to help Earl once again. Earl’s brother Spencer does notice, and pursues her, “No, Deirdre, I’ll go. Stay where you are safe.” Deirdre pauses and looks at Spencer who passes her continuing, “Stay back Deirdre.” Deirdre watches where she stands and Spencer continues to join his brother. Meanwhile, behind her Cyan has killed the enemy and approaches her, “You must come this way, out of danger.” He is about to take her arm, but he notices Spencer struggling with the enemy attacking Earl. Deirdre cries out again, “No, Earl!” Deirdre takes off in a run as the struggle near the bluff continues, just before she gets to Earl; he is thrown over the edge in the struggle. Deirdre continues to run almost over the edge, but she is grabbed from behind by Cyan at the last second. Deirdre tried to look over the edge for Earl, but Cyan moves her out of the way and assists Spencer using his sword to strike the enemy. By now, the skirmish is near the end, between Cyan’s men, and the party Deirdre is with, they have defeated the enemy. Only two stand fighting one of Cyan’s men and Augustus from Deirdre’s party. Several of Cyan’s men have captured two enemies alive, and tie them. Noticing that the battle is under control Cyan turns his attention to Deirdre struggling now in his arms, “You mustn’t look, calm yourself.” Distraught over the loss of Earl, Deirdre gives up trying to go look and sobs. Spencer turns his attention from the bluff, and looks at Deirdre, then at Cyan. Although pained over the sudden loss of his brother, he moves to comfort Deirdre, “It’s alright friend, I’ll take her.” Putting an arm around Deirdre, he said, “It’s alright, come Deirdre.” Cyan releases her, and watches as Spencer guides Deirdre to the spot Earl last stood. Slowly he follows listening as Spencer consoles, “There isn’t anything we can do now Deirdre, you know if there was I would do it to bring my brother back to us. Calm yourself.” Deirdre looked at Spencer sobbing, “What will we do without him?” Just as Spencer is about to reply, he notices blood on Deirdre; “You’re hurt!” Cyan corrected, “It isn’t her blood, she’s unharmed.” Glancing at Cyan, Spencer looks Deirdre over carefully asking, “You’re sure?” Deirdre nods as she sobs, “I’m fine, it’s Earl we’ve lost.” Augustus approached in disbelief, “Earl? No!” Spencer looked at him, “Yes, he is.” The last of their party, Winston looks over at them. Winston approached asking, “Earl? How?” Spencer replied, “Over the bluff, during the struggle.” Deirdre pulls free of Spencer, “Let me alone, I want to sit and think.” Spencer releases Deirdre and watches as she sullenly walks over to one of the larger rocks in the area. She climbs it, and sits atop staring over the view, tears on her cheeks. They watch her cautiously for a moment, and then look at each other. Cyan asked, “Who are these men? Why do they attack so ruthlessly?” Winston answered, “They are men of Gabon from Bretagne we think. Gabon has sent his men through many towns trying to gain power. Those who join him fight those who oppose him, and we oppose him.” Cyan looked around at the men slain lying on the ground, if they all wore identical armor it meant Gabon indeed had power. Cyan asked, “Is he not loyal to King Edmund?” Augustus smirked, “Gabon is loyal to Gabon, he cares of nothing more than himself and gaining as much power as possible. He sent his troops to attack Prince Earl’s castle in the north, they lost that battle Earl and Spencer escaped with their lives. Now look what’s left, Gabon won’t care about King Edmund.” Cyan inquired testily, “What about you? Where does your loyalty lie?” Winston answered, “Easy friend, we are loyal to the King. Augustus is just upset, we all are. He’s got a cousin, Arthur who split apart from our party a while ago he’s worried about.” Winston looked at Augustus adding, “My sister Adela is with them, along with an old friend Clement. We’ll find them Augustus, these men have helped us we should be grateful.” Augustus nodded and sighed, “I am, it’s just that we’ve lost another.” Augustus stood, and walked over to Deirdre sitting on the rock. Cyan watched for a moment with interest before asking, “Why is she so upset? Was she in love with your Prince Earl?” Spencer laughed at this, and Cyan looked at him in surprise. Then he looked at Winston who chuckled, “Far from it friend, Earl was her protector. It was his job to see to her safety while we traveled, although she’s a good friend to us all, she didn’t love him. Just cared for him, like she does us all.” Spencer nodded, and added, “She put Earl in his place first time they met, she did. A bit of a ladies man around his kingdom, he settled down quickly when Gabon arrived. My brother may have been a bit on the arrogant side, but his heart fought on the true side with us. He will be sorely missed, I suppose now it’s up to one of us to take his place in watching over Deirdre.” Spencer looked at Winston, and then over at Augustus before adding, “Or has he already chosen to be the one?” Cyan said, “I hope not, I should think in this situation she should remain in the castle under our protection in Bristol. I think the King may give orders to do so, and then gather troops to find Gabon and see he does not escape the noose.” Winston nodded, “Oh I would agree to that, yet it may be easier said than done, friend. Gabon is a powerful enemy.” Augustus touched Deirdre’s hand, “I know you worry about our dwindling group, and I do too Deirdre. Perhaps these men who’ve come to our aid, will replenish our group. I know it doesn’t bring back Earl, but we can’t dwell on what’s happened here now.” Deirdre nodded, “I know, but we should see to it he has a proper burial, I hate to think of him laying there like that.” Augustus pulled her down from the rock, “We can figure out how to get to him, first though, we should go to the stream and wash. Then we must see to where we can sleep the night, look after ourselves.” Deirdre nodded, “I will, first I must say goodbye to Earl.” Spencer watched as Augustus and Deirdre paused to say a prayer for his brother, and decided to join them. As he left, Winston decided to follow as well to say a last prayer. Ashley approached Cyan saying quietly, “I’ve been watching from yonder my Lord, quite a group we’ve encountered, wouldn’t you say?” Cyan watched the group with interest; Spencer bowed down on one knee dropping his sword at his side. The group remained quiet in prayer for their fallen friend. Cyan nodded, “Aye Ashley I agree, and quite an enemy we’ve encountered too.” He watched the group knelt in prayer, studying each of them. Spencer resembled his late brother, from what he’d seen of Earl. They had the same long blonde hair, and blue eyes. Spencer appeared more muscular than his late brother, who indeed stood taller. Cyan also noted that Spencer appeared more battle worn than Earl did and he wondered why that was. Turning his attention to Augustus, he noted first his long dark hair drawn back in a band. It had streaks of premature silver gray, and hung straight without any waves. The lines around Augustus dark eyes told Cyan he led a stressful life, with his bitterness toward Gabon, Cyan could see why. Augustus stood about the same height as Earl had, but definitely had the muscle like Spencer. Cyan guessed it was from fighting battles, and hard work. Augustus was definitely the most serious of the group. Winston appeared the most laid back of the group, yet just as solemn as the others were at the moment. Cyan noticed that Winston was the smallest of the men, but from what he’d seen of the man, very capable of fighting. He wore his brown hair short unlike the others, and his hazel eyes held a glint of humor. Cyan could see Winston was the most jovial one of the party, and likely to keep the others from being miserable fighting Gabon’s men constantly. Cyan let his gaze fall on Deirdre whose long golden wavy hair swayed gently in the breeze. Her beautiful aquamarine eyes held such pain and sadness that it felt as though a hand was squeezing his heart. He knew at that moment he must see her to the safety of the castle in Bristol, to protect her from Gabon, and keep her from ever appearing so desolate again. |

| Chapter 2 (Meeting)
Spencer picked up his sword; “We must keep going.” He stood and looked at the others, watching as they grouped close to him, “Gabon’s men will keep going, we must stay ahead of them.” He put one arm across the shoulders of Winston on his right, and the other around Deirdre who had moved next to him. Looking at Augustus he continued, “I know my brother liked to tell us all what to do, organize what we should do, plan, and so on. I don’t want to take over doing that, I just want to see we are safe.” They all nodded, and shared a group hug. Augustus broke free first, “We must get to the stream and wash first, I will not let Deirdre travel with evil blood upon her.” Spencer nodded, and then glanced at Cyan, “Perhaps we should check with them, we do owe them for their help.” Winston winked at Spencer, “We should check for new supplies off Gabon’s slain while we’re here too.” Spencer turned to Cyan and Ashley, “I say friend, we mustn’t be here long. Gabon will have more men this way when these don’t return. We owe you much gratitude for helping us.” Approaching Cyan and Ashley, Spencer held out a hand adding, “I am Spencer Battersby of Hertford, pleased to make your acquaintance.” Cyan took Spencer’s hand first, “Lord Cyan Barlow Sheriff of Bristol, and this is my Sergeant Ashley McGreggory.” Cyan nodded at Ashley as he shook hands with Spencer, Cyan asked, “Why is it you do not take the title of Prince Spencer?” Spencer allowed a smile to cross his face; “I renounced my title years ago when I left the castle. Earl remained, of our family I am all that’s now left. Now, I must thank you for helping us, the fatality here could have been much higher for us.” Ashley extended a hand to Spencer, “Pleased to make your acquaintance, Spencer.” As they shook hands, Cyan watched as the others approached. Winston neared first stretching a hand to Cyan, “I am Winston Ellis of Liverpool, I must say I am eternally grateful for your assistance here.” Cyan took his hand replying, “My duty to the King is to protect those who are innocent, and stop those that commit crime against the innocent or the King. I only did what is expected of me…uphold the law, and I might add it is my duty to see to your safety.” Winston nodded, “How good of you.” As Winston turned his attention to greeting Ashley, Cyan looked at Augustus who reluctantly hung back with Deirdre. Holding out his hand to Augustus, Cyan said, “Lord Cyan Barlow Sheriff of Bristol, I believe you’re Augustus.” Augustus took his hand nodding; “I am Augustus, Augustus Casson of Preston, pleased to meet you my Lord.” Cyan felt compelled to say something more, looking into Augustus dark eyes he said, “I’m also pleased to meet you, your courage and skills here are indeed impressive. It will not go overlooked, and I am sure we will be able to work together in defeating this Gabon.” Augustus nodded, stood a bit taller, a glimmer of hope in his eyes, “I do hope so.” His attention turned to Ashley who touched his arm, “You have the help of the King’s army defeating Gabon, I’m sure we’ll have the help of every available man.” Augustus extended his hand to Ashley, and as they shook hands Cyan looked at Deirdre. Spencer guided her towards him, “Come now Deirdre, meet the Sheriff of Bristol who came to our aid.” Cyan took her hand as she extended it, her delicate fingers cool to the touch, and gentle. Her aquamarine eyes still hold sadness, but also interest. Spencer introduced, “My Lord, this is Deirdre Brantford of Carlisle[DG1end note] .” Cyan drew her hand in both of his gently toward him saying gently, “Delighted to meet you, I am Lord Cyan Barlow Sheriff of Bristol.” Managing a smile, Deirdre replied, “It is nice to meet you, I am eternally indebted to you for your kind help.” Cyan returned the smile, “Our help does not end here, we need to see you all to safety. I strongly recommend you return to Bristol with us, and remain in the safety of the castle. There we can plan a strategy against this Gabon.” Reluctantly releasing her hand, Cyan looked at Spencer who said, “I see nothing wrong with accompanying you to Bristol if we are to gain your help.” Cyan nodded, and looked at Deirdre, who said, “I should like to wash at the stream now.” Cyan replied, “I will go ahead with you, Ashley and the men can see to things here.” Ashley nodded, “Of course my Lord, the two prisoners are ready to go.” Spencer gestured with a hand at the prisoners; “I would like to have a few words with them myself if that’s alright with you my Lord.” Cyan nodded, “Of course you may, we shouldn’t be long leaving here. I’ll have plenty of time to talk to them myself in Bristol.” Touching Deirdre’s arm he said, “Come now, away from this gruesome scene. They all can catch up with us at the stream, you’ll be safe.” Deirdre fell into step with him as they headed to the stream, she asked, “Will it be possible to retrieve Earl’s remains for a proper burial?” Cyan studied her closely replying with a question of his own, “How can you think of such a grim task at this time? Whatever is left of his remains will be a ghastly site.” Deirdre answered, “Perhaps so, however not as ghastly as the thought of Earl’s remains as they are. He deserves a proper burial, I can’t stand the thought of him down at the base of that bluff left as he is.” Cyan nodded, “I too, alas trying to retrieve him now will be dangerous, especially with Gabon’s men coming here to search the area. My main concern is seeing you to safety, then seeing to this Gabon. We shall see about devising a way to get to Earl at Bristol, where we can take into account the tools we will need to get to the bottom of that bluff and retrieve his remains. It’s the best I can offer at this time, and not to worry, we won’t leave him there.” Deirdre nodded in satisfaction at his answer, Cyan’s response was wise. She had no reason to distrust him, to slay Gabon’s men meant he was on the right side. Deirdre asked, “Is this the first you have seen of Gabon’s men in this area, or at all?” Cyan replied quickly, “Yes, it is, and I only know what I’ve heard so far today about Gabon. I have a lot of questions, and I must hear all everyone knows if I’m to defeat him.” Deirdre looked at Cyan closely now; his words so self-assured made her study him. His dark blue eyes were focused on her filled with confidence; his square jaw enhanced the confidence. This, including his towering height told Deirdre his self-assuredness was not to be overlooked. He wore his brownish blonde wavy hair short, and from what she’d seen of him he was stalwart. He now waited patiently for her to speak about Gabon, keeping in pace with him to the stream Deirdre said, “Everyone has their own opinions about Gabon, we all share similar views. However what we’ve heard elsewhere that has not been proven we sometimes do not agree on to be true.” Deirdre paused to glance at Cyan again; he hadn’t removed his gaze from her. Continuing to watch her, he replied, “It matters not that people think differently I must take all information given as it is.” Deirdre nodded, and continued, “I first learned about Gabon in Carlisle, several people came warning us that Gabon’s men were entering towns and recruiting people, those that opposed them were killed or taken prisoner. Our rulers sought out people from the towns, and found what we were told to be true. We learned that there was a group of resistance fighters trying to gather and prevent Gabon’s men from moving south. So it was decided that all women and children be evacuated from Carlisle and head further south with any men unable to fight. The rest were to join the resistance fighters, but before we could travel very far we encountered Gabon’s men. We were all separated into much smaller groups; some women tried to return to Carlisle. I can’t say how many were captured, and the others managed to make it to other towns from what I learned. I was with an older couple who had planned to head south to a relative’s home until Carlisle was liberated. We encountered Clement, Winston’s friend he was also a friend of the old man I was with. He had rescued Adela from Gabon’s men earlier, and seeing her to safety as well. He told us the resistance fighters were near by because he’d heard of a battle that had taken place in which Winston was in.” Deirdre paused because they had reached the stream and she stooped to wet her hands. Cyan watched her every move digesting what he had learned so far, and not liking the events that had taken place. Gently he asked, “What of the old couple, where are they?” Deirdre didn’t look at him as she replied, “Killed, Gabon’s men had followed Clement after his daring rescue looking to pursue a revenge. Together Adela and I managed to escape thinking the worst of Clement; the old couple gave their lives for our own. We did not see what happened to Clement, and we continued on. There we met up with King Earl learning his castle had been stormed, and he now was in search of Spencer. He had several men with him, and he did not like us to be travelling alone. He joined us, but he wanted to find the resistance fighters, and Spencer. He told us we would be protected and we went with him. When we got closer to Preston we encountered Augustus in a one-sided battle with Arthur, so we helped them. Earl lost several men there, but kept his promise of keeping us safe. Arthur was injured, so Adela and I tended to him as best we could.” Deirdre had been cleaning up while she spoke, when she paused; Cyan stooped to replenish his water. He watched her as she systematically washed away the blood, and cleaned herself. He could understand why Prince Earl had done what he had, and why Deirdre was sad. He wanted to take the place of her protector, he mused quietly, “I do suppose Arthur is being looked after by Adela where ever they may be.” Letting his hand touch the water, he noted it was cold. He looked at Deirdre quickly, “You’ll catch a chill, don’t soak yourself so much.” Slowly she stood and looked at him as he stood as well, “It is likely Adela is seeing to Arthur, and Clement is with them. I will dry, not to worry.” Cyan shook his head, “You will be damp by nightfall, it will turn colder.” He noticed Augustus approaching with several of his men. Behind them Spencer and Ashley saw to the prisoners, heading them that way. Deirdre turned to look, and Cyan asked, “Has Augustus offer himself to take Earl’s place in protecting you?” Deirdre looked back at Cyan quickly, “No, why?” Cyan replied evenly, “Because I believe that duty should now belong to me. Once you are seen back to Bristol and safe in the castle I can still go and defeat Gabon, and his men. If they do near the castle I can return to protect you, but it shall not come to that.” Deirdre watched him silently for a moment before replying quietly, “Well, you certainly have filled Earl’s shoes quite quickly, I suppose it is only rightfully so to allow you to continue doing so. You’ll not get any dissention from me on the matter.” Cyan glanced at Augustus approaching as he asked, “Perhaps from Augustus?” Deirdre replied, “Augustus certainly had things to say to Earl about his job of protecting me when he saw fit, but he never offered himself to the job.” Cyan inspected his sword for cleaning as he asked, “He will keep a close watch on you?” Deirdre answered, “They all do, I wouldn’t expect anything less of them.” As he tended to his sword, Cyan asked, “What happened after you joined with Augustus and Arthur? How did you find Clement again? Tell me.” Deirdre looked at Augustus again, still approaching. Beyond, she saw Winston loading newly acquired equipment from Gabon’s deceased. Spencer and Ashley brought the two prisoners toward them, but remained on the road. Looking back at Cyan, she answered, “We continued south, by this point many men joined Gabon. They joined out of fear, force, or just because they felt it would be the winning side in the battle. By then the area was nearly surrounded with Gabon’s troops, we encountered Spencer, Winston, and several other fighters who we lost along the way. Clement managed to fool the troop of Gabon’s men he was with into thinking he was a spy for the resistance party. When they found Spencer and Winston, Clement turned on Gabon’s men helping Spencer and Winston. It was then decided that Arthur remained in Wakefield to rest because we weren’t sure how safe the roads would be. Adela is the better one in medicines; she volunteered to stay back. Of course Clement didn’t want them alone in case Gabon’s men came, so he stayed with them. We went out to see which way would be safer to travel, and when we returned they were gone. Augustus wanted to try and find them; nobody disagreed. As we tried to search we realized that Gabon’s troops had caught up to us, so we had to hurry, and gave up searching. Now we’ve come this far, and we’ve been hoping that perhaps there are only a few of Gabon’s troops moving this far south, and maybe Arthur, Adela and Clement made it further east instead of moving south.” Cyan sheathed his clean sword, and looked at Deirdre asking, “So they may not be far from here?” Deirdre nodded, “Perhaps on a trail east of us heading south as well, only slower.” Cyan thought for a moment, there was a road heading east on their way back to Bristol. He could send some of his men on it to find Arthur, Adela, and Clement. Ashley could take them, while he continued back to Bristol with Deirdre. The only problem was they would not make it back before nightfall. Deirdre watched him closely now, his hand resting on his sword while he thought. Hoping he was considering they continue to find the others, Deirdre tried to be persuasive, “I do not like the idea of Adela out there alone with an injured man, and one much older. Although Clement is a strong fighter, he would lose a battle against Gabon’s men. They travel in groups no less than ten men, you yourself have seen how many here.” Cyan watched her closely; “There’s no need for compelling words, I’ve decided to send a troop out on the east road to find them. The element I weigh in my head is regarding what to do about nightfall; we won’t make it to Bristol before then. We also have prisoners to tend with as well.” Cyan noted the pleased look cross Deirdre’s face, and glanced at Augustus who drew nearer to them. Deirdre asked, “Why can’t we all go search for them? Why send half your men? I for one know my friends will be torn in the decision of which way to go.” Cyan looked at her; “I’ll not have you out on roads filled with bandits, and now Gabon’s men. I also have two prisoners to return to Bristol, you must get to the safety of the castle there.” Deirdre inquired, “Why must I? I was thought to be safe with you, how does a mere castle change that?” Cyan noted her stubbornness, and replied evenly, “I won’t have to worry about you if you’re safe there with the King’s men guarding the castle. Out here is more dangerous, and certainly no place for a woman.” Cyan looked at Augustus who approached quicker saying, “I think I agree with what I’ve overheard.” Deirdre turned to look at him asking, “Oh you do, do you? You think it’s best to split us all up and send me to a castle in Bristol? Why is it I can not go with the search party for Clement, Arthur, and Adela? Surely it’s safe enough for us all to go.” Augustus sighed, “Deirdre, think fair lady, what would Earl tell you? He would want you to go to the castle rather than have you out here seeing battles, rogues, and death. We at least agreed on that point, you should head straight to Bristol, never mind how we’re to be divided.” Cyan watched as Augustus stopped at the stream and began to wash; Deirdre remained silent in thought. Cyan decided to remain silent as well, to hear what Deirdre would say. She chose not to reply, and Cyan asked her, “Are you satisfied then?” Deirdre replied quietly, “I have no choice in the matter.” Cyan looked at Augustus who continued at the stream as he said, “Don’t let her beguile you into changing your mind my lord, Earl never did.” Deirdre ignored Augustus, and watched Cyan who looked back at her; “I have no intention of changing my mind, as far as I’m concerned no woman will be allowed outside of any town while Gabon has men here that would not hesitate to kill a woman. From what I saw just now, the King himself could not change my mind.” Deirdre looked away, and Cyan looked at Augustus who chuckled as he cleaned his sword. Cyan added coldly, “I also do not find humor in this matter either.” Augustus turned to Cyan; “Sorry my lord, it is just that your words sound so much like Earl’s. It kept our fair lady here in place.” Deirdre looked at Augustus replying evenly, “That’s what you all liked to think, yet whose idea did you think it was to keep me with you as you travel?” Augustus looked at Deirdre in surprise, and she gave a smile of triumph as she continued, “And whose idea did you think it was for me to join you instead of remain with Adela tending to Arthur? Or to go south before continuing east to search for them? Oh I give Earl credit for his own thoughts, but I managed to put a spin on them.” Cyan had to smile at this, judging by the shock on Augustus’ face, that he had no idea Deirdre had her hand in their affairs. In silence Augustus sheathed his sword, and then looked sternly at Deirdre, “I only hope your spin on things doesn’t cost you, your life. I also hope it didn’t cost Earl, his life.” Augustus strode away quickly towards the road, and Cyan was about to defend Deirdre, but she stopped him, “Leave him, he’s just upset. He will make amends later.” Cyan turned his attention to her; she appeared unhurt by the remark. Moving over to him she touched his arm lightly; “He meant nothing by it, we must continue.” Cyan studied her for a moment, trying to read her beautiful features before he said, “Fine, but let it be duly noted that I do not approve of the way he spoke to you.” Deirdre nodded, “Oh I agree on that, but I just as soon drop it for now and continue before Gabon’s men come further this way.” Touching her hand on his arm, he moved, “Let’s go then.” |

| Chapter 3 (The road)
Cyan Barlow ensured Deirdre was seated safely before giving a gentle tug on his reins signaling his horse to walk. The battle weary resistance fighters hadn’t objected to whom would be riding with whom. All had paired off and rode, the only exception were the two prisoners. Now under his protection, Deirdre hadn’t objected to riding with him. Not long into the journey on the road south, Cyan figured out why. She started talking about what she discussed with Earl and their plans. Cyan listened, with interest understanding why Deirdre managed to get Earl persuaded into changing his ideas. The others hadn’t been listening as they told their own stories to whoever cared to listen. Cyan’s men listened to as much as they could at once, asking questions. Cyan’s concentration wavered, between listening to Deirdre and guiding his horse. He also kept on guard for danger, while his immediate senses stayed alert to the woman riding with him. When she paused he glanced at her to read her _expression, and became distracted by her beauty. Deirdre interrupted his thoughts as she asked, “What if we compromise? You say we can not make it to Bristol before nightfall. Allow the others to continue to search on the east road while we stay the night, by morning they can send word back of how the search goes. If the rest of our party is found, we could wait and accompany them back, if not we continue to Bristol as by your plan.” Cyan had to smile; here he was admiring her beauty when he should have been alert to her sagaciousness. She looked at him now, studying him, and noting his smile. He allowed himself a moment to glance at her before he gibed, “You’re not worried someone will recognize your spin on things?” Deirdre turned her attention back to the road in front of them, and smiled. Sensing a victory on the decision, she remained quiet allowing him to think. He deemed it was a good compromise, he could see nothing wrong with it. Rather than agree wholeheartedly right away, he led her a long asking, “Does your compromise consider what we should do with the two prisoners? Are they a part of the search party?” Deirdre replied, “I’ve left that entirely up to you, after all they are your prisoners.” Cyan smiled as he mused, “Oh, I see, I thought perhaps you may have wanted them to build a shelter for us for the night.” Deirdre looked at him sharply; “You’re mocking me! I suggest a safe compromise and you mock me?” Cyan replied quietly, “Calm yourself, I agree to your compromise. I was making a light jest, and only because of your sagaciousness…it’s just as powerful as your beauty.” Deirdre watched him intently before looking back at the road, quietly she mused, “I don’t know whether to feel angry, or appreciated.” Cyan replied quickly, “Stick with the latter, and add pleased as you should be for making a convincing, and intelligent compromise.” Again Deirdre turned to look at him, and he smiled at her, she returned it. He sensed they had made headway into their friendship. His senses proved to be correct, because she complimented, “You see to sense more quickly than Earl did, I can see how you’ve come to your title.” She turned and looked ahead at the road adding, “I feel most rest assured that you will see to things in a justifiable manner.” Cyan’s smile widened, “Your flattery is welcomed, however it’s unnecessary.” Deirdre didn’t turn as she replied, “Surely it is, it lets one know when they are doing well. I for one uphold it; it gives our group encouragement.” As she turned her head slightly to admire a bird in a nearby tree, her hair fell upon his arm around her as he held the reigns guiding his horse along. It made him notice her close presence, aside from where she had washed her dress; she was warm. He noted she had relaxed considerably since he’d first seen her. Cyan barely heard her as she spoke, “It’s nice to enjoy the journey for a change.” She turned her head to look up at the sky to appreciate its beauty; and this caused more of her fine golden hair to fall upon him. His distraction increased, keeping his hands firmly on the reigns he watched her as he asked, “Your journey has been mostly invading?” Her aquamarine eyes continued to take in their surroundings as she replied, “Aye, it has.” His own dark blue eyes took in her appearance, her delicate curves, soft feminine features. The thoughts of Gabon’s men attacking her made his stomach tighten, if they hadn’t been slain he would have liked to hang them himself. The earlier skirmish still loomed in his mind, Gabon’s men almost succeeding in striking Deirdre with their swords. Cyan glanced back at the two prisoners struggling to walk; he couldn’t wait to see them hang. Deirdre’s voice brought his attention back on her as she said, “We couldn’t stop long at any time, Gabon’s men are never far behind us. Sometimes we would learn they were on the road ahead, and change roads. Several nights we were attacked, Earl would wake me in a panic to get me to the safety of the horses. For many nights afterward I would have restless sleep afraid I’d be awakened to danger.” Cyan watched her as she admired a tree in bloom, coldness squeezed around his heart as he digested her words. His duty to protect the people and uphold the law required him to stop Gabon’s men, and he wanted to be the one to take Gabon’s head. Not just because of his duty, but because of the beautiful woman riding with him. He concentrated on his horse trying to ignore the feelings stirring within him as her hair brushed delicately across his arm again. Her beautiful aquamarine eyes trying to pinpoint the bird that had just called out its song glittered as they scanned the area. He couldn’t imagine how anyone could look at someone as beautiful as Deirdre and wish to harm her. Ashley had followed Deirdre’s gaze, and pointed, “Over yonder in the tree mistress Deirdre.” Cyan followed their gaze and heard Winston laugh, “Is that creature still with us? I think I’ll take Earl’s thoughts now, he said it was a spy sent by Gabon to find us.” Several of Cyan’s men laughed, and Cyan watched as a smile appeared on Deirdre’s face as she spotted the bird. Spencer looked at Winston; “You’ll make a fine brother.” Augustus looked at them asking, “Haven’t we all become brothers?” Winston mocked, “We have, it’s our fair Deirdre who insists she’ll not have part in the family.” Deirdre turned to look back at them returning the jest, “Such sour moods you all remain in, it’s hard not to understand why.” Winston laughed, and Spencer smiled. Augustus ignored them and chose to watch the road ahead of them. Cyan glanced at Deirdre again, the fire still alit in her eyes daring them to reply as she continued, “Who wants to be part of your grim family if you take such a beautiful creature and turn it into something to do with Gabon?” Cyan smiled at the feisty words from her, she knew they wouldn’t reply and she turned to look at the scenery as they rode on. They did not respond to her, and she settled for a moment before saying gently, “You see now what I have to travel with? At least Adela and Arthur would agree with me, even Earl did. They think everything has Gabon’s evil twist on things.” Cyan mocked, “Really, I thought they believed it was your twist on things.” She looked at him sharply, and upon seeing it was a jest she backed down slightly as she said coolly, “I don’t find that amusing, and if you see things their way I would rather head to the castle alone.” She watched him for a reply, and he smiled as he replied gently, “Calm yourself, I was only making light of it to take your mind off their grim views. Besides if you want my opinion I would say you should be travelling with a mirror to stare at your own beauty, they certainly can’t twist Gabon’s evil on that.” Her aquamarine eyes melted as a smile slowly appeared on her face, and Cyan continued to smile as he guided his horse along. Deirdre continued to watch him as she replied, “I suppose you think your eloquent words amend what jest you make of me.” She watched as his dark blue eyes flickered for a moment, but he didn’t look at her as he continued to smile, “My words are spoken truth, as for what I think, if it makes you forget Gabon and the danger then I would gladly accept what amends you wish.” He glanced at her again to find she had completely submitted to the topic, and now smiled. Her eyes glittered again as they turned to the scenery passing them and she remained silent as she watched. The men gave more conversation while they relaxed during the travel. They discussed the areas they traveled through, and several towns. The weary fighters listened with interest, and didn’t reply much. They were too grateful to be riding away from Gabon’s danger and not on foot struggling to retreat. They hadn’t had horses since they separated from the others, allowing them the horses they’d obtained from Gabon’s men in a battle. Deirdre soon tired of looking around, although she hadn’t extended energy fighting, the journey on foot, and lack of proper rest began to take its toll on her. Cyan noticed, but didn’t want to stop in order to make good time. The horses hadn’t tired either as they had kept a slow steady pace. Glancing at Deirdre again, he noticed her eyes beginning to shut. Steadying the reigns with one hand, he used the other to slide around her drawing her to him. She sleepily rested on him, then fell still as he continued to guide his horse along. From his left Ashley watched with interest, before looking back at the road ahead of them. He remained silent so as not to disturb Deirdre and knowing Cyan was fine with her it was best to remain silent. It was silent along the road for a while until Winston noticed Deirdre and called gently, “I say my Lord, has she fallen asleep?” Ashley called back gently; “Aye she has, we’ll be continuing until the horses tire though.” Winston nodded, and looked at Spencer, “I won’t disagree with that.” Spencer returned the nod, “Neither would I.” Augustus looked ahead though and called just as gently as Winston had, “Is she alright?” Ashley looked back and replied, “She’s fine, don’t worry. We’re making good time.” Cyan glanced at Ashley before concentrating on the road again. If they made good enough time, there was an old abandoned shelter on the east road they could use to stay the night in. Ashley and several of the men could go ahead on the road to find the others. If not they would continue to Bristol, and he would see that Deirdre was safe within the castle walls before looking for the others. They made it to the east road when Deirdre stirred, it was good she was waking because Cyan looked at Ashley and motioned to the stream for a rest before they headed east. The others followed them off the road towards the stream; Cyan gave Deirdre a gentle nudge saying, “We’re stopping for a rest.” Deirdre’s eyes began to open as he watched her; she began to come alert as she tried to recall where she was. Studying the area, and then Cyan she asked, “Where are we?” Cyan replied, “We’re at the east road, careful how you speak. I could still change my mind here and head South with you.” He allowed a grin, and she watched him for a moment before moving now sitting upright, trying to un-stiffen from leaning on him asleep. He didn’t move his arm around her as he continued to guide his horse along before drawing it to a stop near the stream. He looked back at the others who followed, and then at Ashley who stopped next to him and dismounted. When he was sure Deirdre was steady, Cyan dismounted and then held his arms up to her, “Take it easy now, you’ve had a long nap.” She slid down into his arms and he set her down cautioning, “Don’t soak yourself with water now, it’s late it will be colder.” She nodded, and turned to her friends starting to climb down from the horses. Cyan headed to Ashley while Deirdre went with the others to the stream allowing the men to water the horses for them. Cyan watched the two prisoners stumble along before saying to Ashley, “You’ll take some of the men along the east road to find the others. By morning regardless of what you’ve found send one of the men back to let us know. If you’ve found them, we’ll remain and join you back to Bristol. If not we’ll continue on, and you continue to look for them. After I get Deirdre to the safety of the castle I’ll head back with a fresh team to help search. I’m not sure what the rest of their party wants to do.” Ashley nodded, “Aye my Lord. We’ll search for any signs of the rest of them. I don’t like that another woman is out there with an injured man. I only hope they’re southeast enough away from this Gabon.” Cyan nodded, “I as well.” He watched them all at the stream adding, “After we’ve found them, we’ll need to alert all the nearby towns about Gabon’s men. I’ll have to get word from the King on what we’ll do, I think the best thing to do is stop them before they get further where ever they stand.” Ashley nodded, “I agree my Lord, I only hope it’s fast enough before they get further ahead.” Cyan nodded, and then they headed to the stream to refresh themselves. Cyan listened as Spencer said, “I say Adela is managing by fright alone, unless Arthur has recovered some.” Winston looked at Spencer and shook his head; “Clement will have put up a brave enough front to keep them from worrying.” Augustus added, “They had the horses, they shouldn’t have any trouble, I think they’ll have made it this far without hassle.” Deirdre looked away trying not to worry, and one of Cyan’s men asked, “How is it they got horses, and you didn’t?” Winston grinned at him; “We confiscated them from some of Gabon’s fallen men. Three of the horses, the others were spooked or harmed.” Ashley looked at Cyan musing, “My Lord if the other’s have been on horses since they split up, they could be ahead on the east road or continuing south.” Cyan looked at him and nodded before he moved to fill his water canteen. Winston asked, “My Lord, will you send us all back to Bristol? Or are we men allowed to help if we want?” Cyan glanced at him before saying, “I’d rather you all rested, and suited up properly before heading out.” Spencer mused, “Watch our fair lady my Lord, she’ll get suited up and slip out without raising a suspicion.” Deirdre looked at him sharply, “I dare say your remarking like Earl wasn’t flattering from him, and I think twice as less of it from you.” Cyan glanced up at them with a wry grin, admiring her feistiness as he watched. Winston laughed at Spencer, who glanced at him before looking at Deirdre, “Now, now mistress Deirdre, don’t be equipping yourself with a sword, your tongue is sharp enough to do the job.” Cyan finished with his canteen and stood watching as Deirdre’s eyes flared as she retorted, “You’ll want to be careful considering I won’t be able to help from the confines of the castle in Bristol. My sharp tongue may get you out of trouble-.” Cyan put a hand on her shoulder interrupting her saying gently, “Don’t get upset at their jesting, get some water and calm yourself.” She looked at him coldly before looking at Winston who laughed, “Yes my Lord she should save some of that fire and brimstone for Gabon’s men.” Deirdre was about to reply, but Cyan turned on Winston asking, “Is that anyway to talk about a woman whom you are supposed to be keeping from harm?” He looked at Spencer adding, “I should think you’d want to see her safely to the castle without incident, or being provoked. What you’re doing now is uncalled for, and quite rude. I don’t know what you do in your home town’s, but where I’m from we treat the women with respect.” Deirdre watched Cyan in surprise, and Winston glanced at Spencer, then they both looked at Augustus, who said quickly, “Don’t bring me into your quarrels.” Spencer shook his head, “Coward.” He looked at Cyan continuing, “We know mistress Deirdre better than you, and I’ll have you know she’s causes us to start and we think she actually likes it.” Winston looked at Spencer, “Well now I didn’t say she liked it, just that she likes challenge.” He looked at Cyan adding, “She also likes to challenge authority.” A grin appeared on his face and Cyan remained silent digesting this while Spencer chuckled. Deirdre waited to see what Cyan would do, and he looked at her asking, “Are they speaking the truth?” Deirdre replied evenly, “I’ve not known them to lie, I have known them to be inaccurate in their thoughts though.” She smiled at them triumphantly as she headed away to the stream pleased she’d gotten in the last word. Spencer chuckled again, and Winston grinned, Augustus watched Deirdre before he muttered, “My Lord’s right, you don’t need to provoke her, it is uncalled for and rude.” Winston playfully cuffed Augustus on the shoulder, “Like you don’t do it yourself Augustus.” Spencer nodded, “I tell you it’s the challenge that provokes us into provoking her.” Cyan watched in interest, and Ashley spoke up, “Whatever you think, I feel it’s impolite to talk to a woman that way.” Spencer looked at him, “Until she gets under your skin Sergeant, then you’ll be right back at her they way we are.” Cyan watched for a moment before saying, “I can see what you mean, however it doesn’t mean I agree with you. There’s only so far a man must let his tongue wag at a woman, and after that point I find it rude. Therefor I’d appreciate it if you mind your tongues as it not only displeases me, it also makes me think less of you.” Cyan headed over to Deirdre ignoring the silence behind them now, he paused next to her at the stream watching as she wet just her hands, and refreshed her face. He watched her in silence before he asked, “Why is it you must grate against people such as you do?” Deirdre didn’t look at him as she replied, “I don’t grate purposefully, I speak my feelings. If they go against what others think I can do nothing besides emphasize my point.” He watched her closely asking; “You like the challenge?” Deirdre drank some water answering, “It may appear so, but I don’t provoking my friends to prove my point. I won’t back down though, and perhaps it appears I do.” Cyan took her arm, and she looked at him as he asked, “Do you challenge authority? As you know I am in charge here, and I will see you south if you challenge me.” Deirdre looked at him calmly, “We had a deal, I have no intention of ruining that by challenging you on anything.” Cyan asked, “And after? If we haven’t found your friends? You’ll continue back to Bristol without challenge?” Deirdre answered quietly, “I’ve given you my word.” Cyan watched her for a moment, studying her aquamarine eyes as he asked, “Then why do I feel concerned?” Deirdre unintentionally made her eyes appear gentle as she replied quietly, “Perhaps because they have put doubts into your head. I accepted a compromise with you, once I have I do not renege on my end.” He let go of her arm, and watched her for a moment before nodding, “If that is so, then I should think we will have no troubles.” She smiled lightly at him, “Until of course the next subject we disagree on.” His dark blue eyes flickered for a moment; he could only imagine what that would be. As long as it didn’t interfere with his duty at hand, he wouldn’t concern himself with it now. He replied quietly, “We head east in ten minutes.” |

| Chapter 4 (East at Night)
It became dusk, as they continued on the east road, Deirdre had been awake since she’d had a nap earlier. She wished she had napped now, there wasn’t much to see as the darkness enclosed them. She was getting cold, and spooked, her console being Cyan close behind her on the horse. His arms around her guiding the reigns gave her comfort and warmth. He noticed she was cold, and used one arm to pull her close to him saying, “We’re almost there, try and keep warm.” He pulled his pelerine cloak around her to warm her, if she hadn’t been spooked she wouldn’t have welcomed it as eagerly as she did. She was glad he didn’t take her unsettlement as fear, she didn’t know if he would tease her about it. That thought vanished when he settled his arm about her securely saying gently, “We should arrive in about twenty minutes, my only concern is keeping the bandits away from you until dawn. Until then, rest, and keep warm.” She allowed herself to rest on him, holding the pelerine around her gently while she tried not to look into the shadows growing around them. Cyan didn’t allow her presence to distract him from keeping a closer eye on their surroundings. He noticed that Ashley rode nearer to him, he guessed it was in case he needed to be on hand if anything happened. He couldn’t imagine travelling along the road with a woman such as Deirdre on foot with people like Gabon’s men trying to harm them. The strain alone would age him tenfold, and he was more than glad he had been travelling with plenty of men on horseback. If Gabon’s men came for them; they would be fine. As it grew darker, Cyan sensed Deirdre’s unsettlement as fear. She started at a creature scared off the road by their approach. Cyan hadn’t flinched, he had been on the road long enough to distinguish the difference between a creature and a bandit. He concentrated on the road as he glanced at Ashley, “We’ve scared off out prisoners supper.” Ashley grinned at this, although they had rations, catching wild game to feed their prisoners was common.” Deirdre glanced at Cyan, being close she could see him and his grin. His blue eyes looked darker due to the fading light as he watched the road ahead of them. Ashley replied from next to him, “A fine hat we could’ve made too my Lord.” A few remarks throughout the men were made over the wild animal and what they’d use the skin as. Deirdre appreciated Cyan didn’t make light of her fear, gently she let her hand rest on his arm around her. He glanced at her with a smile, and remained silent as they continued on. As Cyan had estimated they arrived in twenty minutes, slowing his approach to ensure it was safe he motioned for Ashley to go ahead and have a look. He let several other men pass him, and then looked at Winston on the back of another man’s horse as he asked, “Are we here? Is it empty?” Cyan replied, “We are, and I’ve let my sergeant go look first.” Winston peered at Deirdre asking, “Are you hiding mistress?” She looked at him, and Cyan replied quickly, “She’s cold, leave her be.” Winston grinned at him, “Aye my Lord.” Ashley returned walking his horse saying, “It’s empty my Lord, I’ll light my lantern.” Cyan watched as Ashley tied off his horse and lit the lantern. Then he slid down from his horse, and let Deirdre slide down into his arms. Then he led her inside the shelter with the others following. Once it was lit, Cyan looked at Ashley, “Waste no time, take who ever wishes to go search with you. Secure the prisoners we’ll keep watch over them. Spencer looked at Cyan asking, “Can I do anything my Lord?” Cyan shook his head, “We’ll divide rations soon, you may as well see to yourselves for now.” Although the shelter was well lit, Deirdre was still uneasy, as they had been in a shelter like this one when Gabon’s men had found them. She hoped Cyan wasn’t going to leave, the others would take the opportunity to tease her. She made herself appear busy examining some hay used to make a bed for some other weary traveler. She listened as Cyan gave out orders, then busied herself with the rations the others had brought out. After everyone had their fill, Ashley headed out with several men. Deirdre decided on staying in one corner fixing a place to sleep, ignoring the others as they told stories. Winston did the most talking while Spencer added several points. Augustus chose to listen from near Deirdre while she worked. Cyan sat at the now empty table drinking as he listened to the stories. Augustus dark eyes followed Deirdre with worry, he trusted Cyan, and Ashley, but the other men he wondered about. He didn’t want Deirdre to come to harm during the night, and nobody but him paid her any attention. Or, so he thought, Cyan clapped a hand on his shoulder, and Augustus started. Cyan smiled gently, “Sorry friend, I didn’t mean to startle you. Go have conversation with your friends, leave her to me to watch over.” Augustus watched him for a moment before he glanced at Deirdre who had settled herself to rest. Then he nodded, his dark hair swayed along his shoulders. Cyan could swear Augustus had new streaks of silver through it since the last time he’d looked. Augustus stood, and for the first time Cyan noted they were of the same height. Cyan looked into Augustus dark eyes, and touched him lightly on the arm saying quietly, “Go on, I’ll see no harm comes to her while she sleeps. She will be fine, I assure you.” Augustus nodded again with more confidence this time, and then moved off. Cyan watched him for a moment as he removed his pelerine from his shoulders. Then he headed to Deirdre and draped the cloak over her; her beautiful aquamarine eyes were still open as she watched without moving. He took up a spot nearest her saying, “Get some sleep, I’ll be here.” She didn’t reply, instead she closed her eyes. Ashley McGreggory peered ahead on the road listening as he heard the sounds. Looking at the men he warned, “Easy now.” They continued on, noting the sounds had stopped, and they watched around them carefully. Ashley guessed it was bandits and were too afraid to strike them because if they were caught, they would be hung for attacking a king’s man. They continued on in silence through the night, taking their time so as not to tire themselves or the horses. Several times they noticed sounds and summed them up to more bandits or brogues along the road. Each time Ashley hoped they wouldn’t be heading back to where Cyan and the others were and try and rob them through the night. Cyan waited for everyone to fall asleep except the guards watching the prisoners. Then he took up a position next to Deirdre gently so as not to wake her. Her body felt cold, and he moved close to her to allow her his body heat to keep her warm. It wasn’t long before exhaustion set in, and Cyan fell asleep. Further along the east trail Adela sobbed, “I can’t Clement, please no further.” Arthur breathed heavily, “She’s had it Clement, had it I say.” Clement motioned, “A little further, I see light ahead, we can rest there.” Adela jumped at a noise and shrieked, “It’s Gabon’s men!” Arthur clutched his good arm to him and reached for his sword looking around. Clement turned his horse, searching the darkness; “I see nothing, Adela!” Adela looked around for the noise that started her, and then sobbed, “I can’t, please…I can’t.” Clement relaxed his guard; “I tell you she’s had it.” Clement rode back to Adela and took her reigns from her, “We can’t stay here on the road, I’ll tether you to my horse. We’ll head to that light, we can stay there.” Adela’s shoulders began to shake as she sobbed in near hysterics, “It’s Gabon’s people, we can’t.” Clement asked, “Then where would you like to spend the night? Here on the road with the brogues?” He finished tethering the horse and looked at Arthur, “Ride next to her, calm her.” They continued a bit further down the road with Arthur trying to calm Adela, and Clement staring ahead at the light. He could see horses, and a man out front who appeared to be wearing the garb of a king’s man, not Gabon’s. He turned to look back at his friends in excitement; “It’s not Gabon, a king’s man.” They grew silent for a moment while they peered ahead, and then Adela heard a snicker from the side of the road, and shrieked in a start again. Her shriek and sobbing muffled the sound to Arthur’s ears and Clement paused to look asking, “What now? Adela-.” As a hand grabbed Adela’s leg, she let out a blood-curdling shriek. Sensing movement to his right Arthur turned from Adela and unsheathed his sword. Upon seeing movement Clement unsheathed his own sword calling, “Adela!” He tried to get his horse tethered to hers to move from the danger, but Adela had been pulled from the horse by a bandit. Switching tactics he quickly dismounted from his horse not noticing the king’s man from the house approaching in a hurry to help. Adela screamed, “Clement! Help! No!” Her cries raised the hairs on the backs of their necks, and as Arthur desperately tried to dismount and start attack on the man on his side he tried to close out Adela’s cry. Clement closed the gap as quickly as he could, but encountered a bandit next to the one that had grabbed Adela. He had been surprised in his effort to steal from her horse, but quickly drew sword to Clement who looked past him at Adela struggling with the bandit trying to throw her to the ground, “Leave her be! I say, fight a man!” Adela’s screams continued, calling for help from Clement or Arthur, but her rescuer was neither man. The king’s man closed the gap faster with each scream for help piercing his heart encouraging him. He lunged his sword at the first spot of the bandit he saw it made him release Adela who shrieked again in surprise. When the bandit turned on him, he thrust his sword again straight through in a mortal strike. Before the felled man could spill onto Adela, he gently took her arm saying quietly, “You’re safe now. Stay behind me and I will help your friend.” He motioned to Arthur hearing the man’s struggle, and Adela watched in surprise as she slowly followed the king’s man as he took Arthur’s bandit by surprise. From the other side of the horses, Clement had fatally wounded his bandit and called, “Adela!” Adela replied, “Here, we have help!” She turned to look back at the new arrival that finished the bandit with a near decapitating blow. Arthur who hadn’t been able to dismount from his horse could see more people arriving, he asked, with great difficulty, “Say friend, are those your people?” The king’s man looked and seeing his men, he nodded replying gently, “They are, a little late, but need not worry.” He looked up at Arthur and noticed his injuries adding, “You’re hurt!” Arthur nodded weakly, “I was before this.” Clement took Adela by the arms asking, “Are you hurt?” Adela had been shaken, but unsure if she was hurt. It brought the king’s man back to her saying gently, “You must come with us inside, and see to attention.” He looked at his men arriving and ordered quietly, “See to that man upon the horse, he’s injured. We’ll get them inside.” They let Arthur continue his ride in one of the men guided the horses while Clement walked with one arm around Adela, the king’s man remained on the other side asking quietly, “Why is it you’re out on the road at such hour with a woman?” Clement looked at him, “It’s a long story friend, we’ve come a long way. In search of our friends who traveled with us. We were headed for your light when they attacked.” The king’s man nodded and then replied gently, “Well, you are more than welcome.” He touched Adela’s free arm adding lightly, “We will see to your needs, and ensure you are safe.” Adela looked at him from what little light there was on the road that he could see her tear streaked face and smiled lightly. Clement looked at the king’s man, “You’ll have to mind her, Adela has been through quite a lot and trying desperately to keep her wits about her these past few hours.” He was pleased to learn her name, but heartbroken as she timidly looked away in fear. Clement slid an arm around her saying, “There, there Adela, we’re safe now.” From his perch on the horse Arthur tried to look, “Nothing a good night’s rest can’t cure.” He let out a gasp, and Adela looked at him in worry. Clement did as well, and then at the king’s man who watched with interest. When they reached, they helped Arthur in and let him rest on one of the beds. Adela let one of the king’s men take care of Arthur’s injuries while she watched with a hand to her mouth in concern. Another man tended to Clement who watched from his spot where he was being tended. The king’s man came over to Adela with a dampened handkerchief and started to clean away the tear streaks asking gently, “Have you any pain anywhere?” She watched him now, and shook her head. Allowing him to finish she watched as Arthur tried his best to smile and say, “I’m doing fine you just rest here.” The king’s man continued to refresh Adela saying quietly, “He will be well looked after, I assure you. Next we’ll see to getting you something to eat and drink. You’ll feel better then.” The anticipation of knowing whom the king’s man was forced Adela to ask, “Are you for Gabon?” The king’s man paused in silence watching Adela whose hazel eyes looked as though they threatened to fill with more tears. Clement said, “Nonsense Adela, he’s a king’s man, obviously loyal to the King.” Adela waited for the king’s man to answer, he set the handkerchief down and took one of Adela’s hands to his mouth and kissed it gently before he said softly, “Allow me to introduce myself, I am Prince Ivan Cole. I am the nephew of the King’s wife, crowned Prince by the King for the act of successfully protecting the King’s family during an attack several years ago. Mind you I don’t take my title quite as seriously as the others as I do like to uphold my job of seeing to the people of the towns.” Adela nodded, and Arthur winced from his pain as he said, “Good thing you don’t Prince Ivan, I don’t think I could bow to you without staying down on the ground.” The Prince turned to look at him with a smile as he said gently, “Nonsense, just rest now, let us see to you.” He returned to the cloth, and started again on Adela asking gently, “So you are Adela, I am most pleased to meet you, I am so sorry you’ve had such a hard time.” Adela watched him with interest now, she asked, “Have you not heard of Gabon?” Prince Ivan paused from his work, and dampened the cloth again saying lightly, “That name again, no it means nothing to me.” Clement said coldly, “It will mean something when they reach here, they aren’t far behind us.” The king’s man looked at him before taking the cloth and tending to Adela as he asked delicately, “What do these words mean?” Arthur sucked in a gasp before he said wearily, “It means the towns will be over ridden by Gabon’s men, and those that oppose look like me, or worse.” Adela’s hazel eye’s watched Prince Ivan’s piercing blue ones. It contrasted drastically from his dark hair. As he touched the cloth to her chin to cleanse a smear he said in his calm gentle tone, “If that were the case friend, I would have heard about these men from the towns people already. Perhaps they haven’t stopped in any towns to over ride them as you say.” Clement replied, “True Prince Ivan, however they did that further north where we were. In time, they’ll try it. They must be just chasing us now; we’re the resistance team. Our friends are somewhere west of here, perhaps further north. One of them is Winston, Adela’s brother. We agreed to separate head south, and we stayed east because Arthur was injured we couldn’t wait for them to return so we continued on our own.” He glanced at Arthur before saying, “Where are my manners, I am Clement that’s Arthur.” Prince Ivan looked at him he paused from tending to Adela to shake Clement’s hand. Then he moved to Arthur, and took his good hand gently saying, “Pleased to make your acquaintance.” He returned to Adela and noting she appeared clean, he tended to her hands saying gently, “We’ll get you something to eat and drink, then to a safe warm bed for the night. Tomorrow we will accompany you on the road to find your friends. No harm will come to you, we will see to that.” Adela asked carefully, “You are not for Gabon then?” Clement smiled, “I think it’s obvious he isn’t Adela. Relax now.” Prince Ivan nodded as he said lightly, “I am not for Gabon, my loyalty lies with the king. If he told me to harm a beautiful young woman, I wouldn’t have it in my heart to do so. Come now have something to eat, and you may have my bed closest to the fire. I shall stay up and watch over us.” One of the men said, “Prince Ivan-.” Prince Ivan cut him off with a gentle wave of one hand and a quiet voice, “Now, now, it’s decided.” After seeing to it that they were fed, Prince Ivan took great gentle measures to see Adela to his bed by the fire. Clement fell asleep as fast as Arthur did do to their exhaustion and Adela followed suit. Prince Ivan sat for a moment longer next to Adela, adjusting the covers, and lightly stroking her dark hair before he went over to the men still awake. He whispered to them, to go back on the road and take care of the gruesome scene of the incident taking care on retrieving any stolen items from the bandits before disposing of their remains. He told them when they were done that, that one of them should head east on the road looking for the remainder of the party they had encountered. They were to let Adela’s friends know they were safe, and would continue east in the morning. When the men left Prince Ivan remained watching over them, he had always been a brave man never fearing a conflict of any kind. He’d not heard of Gabon, but if this man had upset the sleeping Adela this badly he would be more than pleased to take Gabon’s head in payment. |

| Chapter 5 (East at Day)
Deirdre awoke sometime during the night to Cyan’s firm arm draped around her middle, and didn’t move. His solid form behind her gave her warmth, and although she had been surprised to have him there beside her she didn’t complain. When she awoke again, it was just daybreak, and she was disappointed that none of Ashley’s men had returned with news. Cyan’s strong arm still around her gave her comfort though, that Gabon’s men would no longer be able to harm her. Cyan would see to that, this she knew. Without moving she scanned the shelter in the dawn’s light, the men covering the prisoners were awake although the prisoners slept. Deirdre didn’t look at Gabon’s men captive in the corner; instead she looked at Winston who sat up now awake. He stretched, and then looked at Deirdre he grinned and called gently, “Looks like you’ve found Earl’s replacement.” Deirdre said solemnly, “If only I could replace Earl.” Winston nodded, he agreed with her, and he stood and moved closer to her taking a seat asking quietly, “What of the castle at Bristol? You’ll stay won’t you?” Deirdre replied in a whisper, “I made a promise I will keep it.” Winston touched her hand; “I worry about my sister and the others out here too mistress Deirdre. If my Lord here doesn’t find them soon, when we’re refreshed we’ll go bring them back. I promise you that.” Deirdre whispered back, “I will wait patiently, now don’t worry about me, you’ll wake him. You all need the rest more than I, I’m not fighting the battles.” Winston glanced at Cyan before he smiled, and Cyan moved and looked over Deirdre saying gently, “I’m already awake.” He looked at Winston adding, “And you knew that.” Deirdre looked at him, and then Winston asking, “I suppose we’ll be heading to Bristol now.” Cyan shook his head, “We must hear from the man Ashley sends back first.” Winston teased, “We could head back first and you could catch up my Lord.” Cyan looked at Winston, “There’s no call for that, leave her be.” Winston grinned and gave Deirdre’s hand a squeeze before letting it go, “You know I’m joking to lighten your mood.” Deirdre looked at Winston, “I do, but at this time I’m in no mood for it.” Winston nodded, and winked at her before he got up and moved off. Deirdre didn’t look at Cyan, who stared at her now asking gently, “You worry about Adela?” She looked at him, “And Arthur, he was injured. If they got far enough away I wouldn’t, but we don’t know. I’ve seen so many lost, like Earl…the suspense alone will kill me.” Cyan nodded, “Fair enough, as soon as we have word, I will tell you right away if you do not hear first hand. I’ll remind you that worrying out here on the road is not as safe as doing so at the castle in Bristol.” She watched him, and replied, “I understand that, that is why I agreed to this bargain. It appears it has bought me nothing, except some time to find out what Ashley and the others have learned.” Cyan mused, “Be more optimistic, they could be returning together right now as we speak.” Deirdre watched him closely, “I wish I could, but I fear you are wrong. I would much rather face down fall now than later, and be done with it. I do have confidence that something will be found, maybe even all of them alive. Yet they feel the same on their journey about us, and do not know they have the loss of Earl. It works both ways my Lord. Surely you understand that.” Cyan did and he nodded, “Duly noted, and please, call me Cyan.” She returned the nod, and then they both rested until the others started to stir. Ashley continued peering up the road; the daylight beginning to break gave them more of a view. He promised the men if they saw anything they would wait before sending someone back to Cyan. He shook his head in dismay; it appeared there was no sign of anyone. He looked at one of the men who hadn’t carried an extra person on his horse. The horse wasn’t as tired, and they had stopped to replenish the water. It would be ready to ride back quickly to Cyan with a report. Ashley said, “Take a message back to my Lord and tell him we’ve not encountered a sign of the party, let him know there were plenty of brogues and bandits though. Don’t mention that around mistress Deirdre or the others so they won’t worry.” When he paused they heard something and looked up the road. They couldn’t see anything, but it sounded like a horse in a gallop. The man asked, “Shall I go now sergeant?” Ashley looked at him, “No, one more minute wont hurt.” They waited and then on the road east stirring up a cloud of dust under its hooves a rider appeared on a horse in a fast gallop. When the rider neared, they noticed the man wore the garb of a king’s man. Ashley waited patiently as the king’s man stopped in a halt at them, “Say there friend, I’m looking for friends of a young woman and two men. They were to meet upon the road or in the area. Have you seen them?” Ashley asked, “Was one man injured?” He recalled the name he’d overheard, “Arthur?” The king’s man nodded, “Aye, he was wounded on his horse when we discovered them being attacked by bandits. They’re all fine, but won’t travel out until I guess about now. Prince Ivan said at daybreak they would leave.” Ashley asked, “Prince Ivan? He’s with them?” The king’s man nodded, “Aye, he’ll see them back this way. He told me to go ahead and see if I can find the others, they’re not with you.” Ashley nodded, “We left them back with my Lord Barlow Sheriff of Bristol in a shelter for the night. He did not wish for mistress Deirdre to travel along the road at night.” The king’s man nodded, “Aye, Prince Ivan was distressed to see mistress Adela out on the road at night, terribly frightened she was.” Ashley asked, “How far up the road are they, “The king’s man replied, “I can show you, but I traveled slower during the night, couldn’t say how fast we’d meet up with them. What of the others, how far back?” Ashley replied, “The same thing for us, we traveled most of the night friend. It need not matter; I’m to send word back with one of the men. He will return with this news, and we will continue with you. I am sure we will all meet somewhere along the way to Bristol. This is where my Lord wishes to take mistress Deirdre, to the safety of the castle there. As well as mistress Adela, I’m sure.” The king’s man nodded, “I would agree, and I’m sure Price Ivan will agree as well.” Ashley looked at the man, “Go back to my Lord and tell him what we’ve learned. We’ll continue on the road, and if we see fit we’ll send someone with more news. I’m sure Prince Ivan has plenty of men traveling with him.” The man nodded and headed back at a gallop, meanwhile Ashley said to the king’s man, “Well then make haste, we’ll see to escorting the party now.” The group took off at a gallop heading back to Prince Ivan. Further east on the road, Prince Ivan allowed Clement to ride with Arthur and help him guide the horse along. They rode fresh horses, and left the others back at the home. Meanwhile, he insisted Adela ride with him, she hadn’t objected. She trusted him when she awoke seeing he had been alert watching over them. Giving her a light smile and a gentle touch with a whisper he reassured her things were fine. She couldn’t relax for fear of yet another attack, but riding with him kept her calm. Clement and Arthur noticed this; they rode alongside him and smiled at Adela. Clement said, “If I had known riding with you would keep you happy I would have done that.” Adela looked at them, but watched Arthur in concern. Arthur noted it, and said, “I’m fine mistress, stop worrying.” Adela looked away and choked out a sob, “I worry of Winston.” Prince Ivan put an arm around her gently, and said quietly, “There now, don’t cry. Upsetting yourself isn’t going to help. We may see them up ahead on the road. They may all be fine.” Clement agreed, “That’s right Adela, your brother fights ten times better than I, he’ll be fine. I bet with a grin on his face too.” Arthur tried to laugh, “Aye Clement, and likely ready to lay into us old men.” Adela stopped crying, and composed herself saying nearly desolately, “I worry so much over you Arthur, I can’t imagine how I would feel if it was Winston.” Prince Ivan gently stroked Adela’s arm and said quietly into her ear, “We understand, try not to worry so. You have me here to see you are safe until we find him.” He noted no more tears came from her hazel eyes, but she didn’t smile. They continued on, and one of the men took notice of the king’s man trail. They knew he was far ahead and maybe still searching for the rest of the party. Cyan watched as the men got the horses freshly watered and ready for the journey out, one man stayed near the road to wait for word from Ashley. Meanwhile the others had breakfast, and washed up. Spencer had been at the prisoners again with questions when Deirdre was out washing up at the nearby creek. Cyan kept a close eye on her, as well as the others. Cyan was just about to get everyone mounted up when one of the men Ashley had taken rode up in a gallop. Deirdre impatiently clutched her hands together to hear the message, and the man called, “My Lord, I have news!” Deirdre put her hands to her mouth excitedly while Winston and Augustus stepped closer. Spencer came out of the shelter and approached touching Deirdre’s arm while the man stopped, “We met up with one of Prince Ivan’s men, he came up the road in search for them.” He motioned to Deirdre, and Spencer standing together. Winston and Augustus had moved next to them. Cyan asked, “Where are the rest of the party? Are they headed this way?” The man replied, “Aye my Lord, Ashley and the others continued east on the road to escort them back, they’ll be a while, the king’s man rode through the night as we did to get as far as he did. They found them being attacked by bandits, but they were okay. They stayed back with Prince Ivan to head out at dawn, I don’t know how far along they’ve come, but they’ll be well guarded by the Prince’s men.” Deirdre looked at Cyan who thought about this and the man added, “Sergeant said he’d send someone else with word if necessary, but they’re all headed this way my Lord. From what I gathered, mistress Adela was terribly frightened, but unharmed.” Winston nodded in relief, and asked, “What of Arthur?” The man looked at him, “He said he was injured upon the horse when they found them, but I take it they’re all right or they wouldn’t be able to travel with him.” Spencer nodded, “True, so they are fine.” He looked at Deirdre beside him and hugged her saying, “They are fine Deirdre we’ll be together again.” She nodded, and looked now at Cyan to see what he would do. He was in a dilemma about what course of action to take. He figured they would be safer travelling together, but waiting for them may cost them another night. He looked at the man asking, “How far back up the road did you meet?” The man thought for a moment, “About an hour hard gallop my Lord, my horse will need water and a rest.” Cyan asked, “They’ll be about two hours at a gallop behind would you say?” The man thought and then nodded, “Perhaps that my Lord.” Cyan sighed; they had to leave now if they wanted to be near Bristol before dark. He didn’t want Deirdre on the road another night. He’d already used up their extra time waiting for the man to return. He looked at him, “Stay behind, rest your horse and get water from the brook. We’ll head out, our prisoners are on foot, so they have the opportunity to catch up since nobody with them are walking. Hopefully they can catch up to us on our return to Bristol.” He looked at Deirdre who watched silently, but didn’t comment. Instead she headed to Cyan’s horse and waited for him, Winston approached saying, “I’ll give you a lift up.” Cyan climbed up onto his horse and waited for Winston to lift Deirdre up. Once settled he looked around as the others all climbed up onto the horses. The prisoners grumbled, but fell into step with the horses as they once again set off. Prince Ivan gently stroked Adela’s hand as he guided his horse along; they had made progress heading along the east road nearer to Ashley’s men, and the man he had sent ahead. He guessed they would appear in the horizon soon, and glanced at the others asking calmly, “How are the horses, and everyone?” The men replied things were fine, and Prince Ivan nodded, “Then let’s pick up our pace a little, shall we?” Clement smiled, and glanced at Arthur, “Hold on friend.” As their pace increased, Adela thought about the soft-spoken kind hearted prince riding her back along the road to find her friends. She didn’t know if she would ever be able to repay his kindness, but she did know she would never distrust him again. When she saw the newcomer’s on the road ahead she became alarmed, trying to find sanctuary within the circle of the Prince’s arms. He recognized his man with them and said gently in her ear, “Relax my fair lady, the man I sent out last night is with them. They are friend.” Adela watched with renewed interest, and Clement asked with interest, “Do you think they know where the others are?” Prince Ivan looked at them, “Aye, I sent someone out ahead last night to find your friends. They’ve come to us for a reason.” Arthur tried to look from behind Clement asking, “Is it safe to assume they’ll be helping us with Gabon?” Prince Ivan looked at Adela who stirred with worry and soothed gently, “Of course, if not they wouldn’t be here to escort us to them.” As they neared, they slowed to a stop and the king’s man said, “This is Sergeant Ashley McGreggory Prince Ivan, we met upon the road. The sheriff of Bristol is in the company of the rest of the party.” He looked at Ashley saying, “This is Prince Ivan Cole, Sergeant.” Ashley made a slight bow from off his horse, and Prince Ivan said gently, “Please, that isn’t necessary. Pleased to make your acquaintance, I would like to get the party back together, and see the lady to the safety of the castle in Bristol. It’s the nearest one to here and safe.” Ashley grinned, “Well Prince Ivan, that we haven’t a problem with, come along and we’ll escort you back while we talk.” They headed on at the same speed as they had been at when they met an urgent pace. Ashley rode alongside Prince Ivan and Clement taking in the party members that Deirdre and the others had mentioned. He looked at Arthur saying, “You must be Arthur, I’m pleased to see you’re well enough to ride.” Arthur grinned, “I am to Sergeant.” Clement extended his hand, “I am Clement, Sergeant. I must say it is welcoming to have more on our side against Gabon.” Prince Ivan looked at Clement saying in a prickly quiet tone, “There’s that name again, and I certainly don’t like it.” He looked at Ashley asking in the same quiet tone, “Have you heard about him?” Ashley nodded, “Aye Prince Ivan, and encountered some of his men. My Lord and I stopped them from harming the lovely mistress Deirdre, unfortunately along with the this news I bring the tragic loss of a member.” Adela sucked in a breath as fresh tears formed down her cheeks; Prince Ivan was too concerned with Ashley’s tale to notice. Clement asked in concern, “Who was it Sergeant.” Ashley looked between them lowering his voice as he said solemnly, “A brave man from what I saw of him, Prince Earl it was, over the edge of a bluff.” He paused to look at Adela who let out a loud sob, before he looked at Clement and Arthur again, “The others are all fine, I know it’s no condolence for the loss, but they’ve held up well.” Prince Ivan turned his attention to Adela soothing gently, “There, there now, I’m sorry for this news, but you must look on the bright side. You’re safe now, and with plenty of help, no more harm will come to you.” He looked at Ashley asking, “What of this Gabon and his men?” Ashley answered, “Gabon, I haven’t heard. His men, annihilated except for two prisoners in my Lord’s company.” Prince Ivan nodded, and then asked, “What does my Lord have planned to do about this Gabon?” Ashley answered, “I’d assume have his head on the end of his sword if he could. He didn’t take too kindly to those men striking their swords at the defenseless mistress Deirdre. I dare say I didn’t either.” Prince Ivan nodded again, and then turned his attention to Adela still sobbing quietly as she asked softly in a gasp, “Winston?” Ashley couldn’t hear her, but Prince Ivan did, he looked at Ashley asking quietly, “What of Winston, her brother?” Ashley looked again at Adela, “Oh, right sorry mistress Adela, your brother is fine. A funnyman he is, I might add. Spencer, and Augustus are fine too.” Adela began to tremble and Prince Ivan turned his attention back to her. They couldn’t hear his quiet soothing words, but Clement glanced at Arthur musing, “We certainly could have used him with us.” They too liked the gentle natured prince that had such a soothing effect on Adela. It wasn’t long before she had stopped crying, and settled quietly in his arms. |

| Chapter 6 (The Ride to Bristol)
Cyan continued the group off the east road onto the one they had turned off the day before continuing south. They got reports from the men trailing that they’d neither heard nor seen anything on the road behind them. It would soon be time to stop for a rest and a meal, and Cyan knew where to stop near the stream. He would give Ashley and Prince Ivan’s men time to catch up. Deirdre had remained silent for the majority of the ride, it appeared she accepted his decision to continue rather than wait. Knowing that there were plenty of men, and the group was safe was also a factor. When they dismounted at the stream and broke for lunch Deirdre still remained silent as she took what she needed, and then sat alone by the stream while they rested. Winston looked at Spencer, who nudged Augustus and motioned to Deirdre, “What did you say to her?” Augustus looked at them, “Nothing. Let me be.” Augustus got up and strolled off, Cyan watched as he avoided Deirdre as well before he looked at Winston and Spencer. He approached listening as Winston said, “Well if it wasn’t him, then-.” Spencer motioned with a hand and Cyan said, “No, Spencer let Winston finish.” Winston looked at him, “Someone upset her, she’s unusually quiet. Perhaps something you said, my Lord?” Cyan looked at him, and then Spencer who said, “If not something said, then something done.” Cyan looked at both of them and said, “Perhaps with both of you. Perhaps I should go find out.” He stalked off toward Deirdre ignoring the two laughing. Pausing at Deirdre he said quietly, “Your friends think you’re quiet because you’re upset over something.” Deirdre looked at him asking, “You’ve come to ask what it is? You’ve had the journey from the shelter to ask me, why now?” Cyan watched her answering, “I didn’t know your silence could mean unhappiness, now I do I’m here to see if I may be of help.” Deirdre watched Cyan replying, “It isn’t anything you can be of help for, I was thinking about Earl not being here with us.” She turned her eyes toward the stream and he caught the pain in it. Cyan nodded; there wasn’t anything he could do to replace the loss. He glanced at Winston and Spencer watching him, and talking. He guessed they were talking about him, and what their conversation was about. Looking at Deirdre he watched as a silent tear rolled down her cheek. He stooped next to her, and slid a hand along her shoulder saying gently, “Aye, I can’t be of help. I do feel for your loss though Deirdre. Of what I saw of Earl, he fought valiantly, and although I didn’t know him as well as you I do feel the loss.” Deirdre didn’t look at him as she touched his hand on her shoulder, “Thank you, your kindness has been much appreciated.” Cyan replied quietly, “You may not think so, when you learn that we have to leave within the next ten minutes.” She looked at him now asking, “Why would that change anything? I know the others are fine, regardless of if they catch up to us or not. We will need to get to Bristol before dark, I see the sense to this Cyan.” Cyan allowed a smile to creep across his face, “So you do, perhaps I’ve underestimated you.” She smiled lightly at him, and then used her free hand to wipe the tear from her cheek musing, “Perhaps from untrue tales from the others.” Cyan grinned wider, and Deirdre returned it. Ashley dismounted and looked around the stream before he said, “Prince Ivan, they’ve recently stopped here, not far a head they’ll be.” Prince Ivan busied himself dismounting from his horse, and then helped Adela down replying gently, “We must let them rest and refresh as well.” He held Adela in his arms gently as he said softly to her, “Come now, to the stream and clean those tears from your cheeks.” He guided her gently allowing his men to take the horses to water. Clement helped Arthur toward the stream while the rest of the men refreshed themselves and tended to the horses. Prince Ivan remained with Adela helping her wash up and refresh herself at the stream. As he got himself cleaned up and drank from the stream Prince Ivan studied Adela who washed her hands. He was filling his canteen when he heard a sound behind him, spinning quickly with his dagger in hand Prince Ivan turned on his sudden assailant and struck quickly shouting, “Brogues!” He heard movement of the men behind him, and Adela shriek. Before any of the assailants could move near her Prince Ivan moved to stop them, keeping them back. His men suddenly came to assist him, and Ashley’s men moved to protect Adela. The attackers hadn’t realized they had been outnumbered when they struck, and Prince Ivan and his men subdued them quickly. Once they were settled, Prince Ivan came back to Adela to see if she was all right. Taking her by the shoulders gently he asked in concern, “How are you?” Adela watched him replying quietly, “I am unharmed thank you, and you?” Prince Ivan smiled as he replied gently, “Perfectly fine my dear. Let us finish here at the stream and get you back on the horse.” Because they kept the assailants as their prisoners to bring to Bristol, they had to move slower due to the fact that the prisoners walked. It didn’t concern Prince Ivan, he knew they were not far from Bristol and with a party of their size they could travel safely along in the early evening. Ashley decided to send a man ahead to give Cyan an update on their situation. He wanted him to know that they would not be able to catch up with their new prisoners. When the man left riding ahead Adela looked at Prince Ivan asking, “How long before we reach Bristol?” Prince Ivan replied softly, “At nightfall, never to worry my dear, you can rest here on me if you get tired.” Clement looked at them from the horse he and Arthur shared, “She’s worried about riding in the dark, she fears it.” Adela looked at Clement with worry and Prince Ivan said gently into her ear, “Nothing to fear my dear, there are plenty of us here to keep you safe. You’ll be safe with me.” Adela was beginning to feel safe within the circle of his arms, she tried not to worry. They continued to ride with the men, and Adela had time to think about reuniting with her friends soon. She did like Prince Ivan’s company though, and hoped that after she was safe at the castle that he would be around. His kind and gentle manner calmed her, and she admired his strength and skills as a fighter. She wondered if Prince Ivan was anything like the late Prince Earl. Ashley rode next to them saying, “Prince Ivan, will you be a part of our battle against Gabon.” Prince Ivan looked at Ashley making a face as he replied gently, “I do so hate that name, it’s like the sound of grinding teeth, Gabon. I would enjoy the sound of it more after he’s hanging in the gallows.” Ashley nodded, “Aye, my Lord dislikes him and his men as well. It will be an honor to work with you in defeating the man.” Prince Ivan nodded as he replied quietly, “As well as a reward for who ever captures his head. I’ll be honest with you friend, if it were I, I would let someone like yourself or my Lord the credit, as I need no reward besides putting this Gabon to his death.” Adela tried not to listen, but Prince Ivan’s gentle voice was hard to ignore. His delicate tone and quiet annunciation had been magnetic from the start. Prince Ivan suddenly turned to Adela admonishing himself quietly, “Where are my manners? Such matters should not be discussed like this in your presence. Please forgive me.” Adela looked at him shyly with a smile; “It’s quite alright Prince Ivan.” Prince Ivan smiled gently, and replied in a lighter tone, “No my dear it really isn’t, you’ve had a trying journey. My prattling on about this Gabon is only making you uneasy. I shall not discuss it any further.” Adela didn’t reply; she had resumed thinking about whether she would see Prince Ivan again after she reached the safety of the castle. She hoped she would have a chance to ask, she didn’t mind staying with Deirdre there if she knew Prince Ivan would return when the battle with Gabon was over. The man Ashley sent, caught up to Cyan in a gallop, “My Lord, there’s been a delay.” Cyan slowed and looked back asking, “What now?” The man replied, “Sergeant warden’s asked me to tell you that they’ve captured several bandits that attacked them back at the stream during our break. They’re walking and slowing them down, so they likely won’t catch up after all my Lord.” Cyan watched him for a moment before he said, “I don’t like that we’re all slowed down by these prisoners. Ride back and tell them to leave several men with their prisoners, and the rest to travel at speed to us. Once our parties have been reunited we’ll leave our prisoners to walk back with theirs and continue on ahead at a proper pace. I want to get back into Bristol before nightfall. Go now, make haste, we’ll continue at this pace until they catch up.” The man nodded, and then took off back in the direction he came. From the back of one of the men’s horses, Winston asked, “Have you had enough of this slow pace my Lord, or just trying to get my dear sister off the road before dark?” Cyan looked at him, “I answer to both reasons Winston, I’ll not have these women out here any longer than needed.” While they continued Deirdre looked at Cyan asking quietly, “What if Prince Ivan disagrees with this?” Cyan looked at her replying equally as quiet, “He will see to sense on the situation. The prisoners can walk slowly together with the men to guard them while we move quicker to the safety of the castle in Bristol. If not I’ll order our party to do just that, and then at least you’ll be back safe.” Deirdre shrugged, “It is not for me to say, I have kept my end of the deal.” Cyan nodded and answered with a wry grin, “So you have, and I suppose later we’ll have another.” She smiled at him, but remained silent. They rode along in silence before Deirdre looked at Cyan again asking, “Will you stay near Bristol in your endeavor to stop Gabon?” Cyan looked at her before he smiled, “I won’t be far, if you’re thinking of leaving the castle I’ll know about it soon enough.” Deirdre shook her head, “Nonsense Cyan if that is where I am to remain for safety I shall. I merely wondered how often you’d be about.” Cyan asked slyly, “Will you miss me?” Deirdre looked at him again; “No I fear it to be the other way around.” A smile tugged at the corner of her lips, and Cyan watched her for a moment before he laughed. The man carrying Spencer on his horse looked at Cyan asking, “Something the matter my Lord?” Cyan looked and noted Spencer’s grin, Spencer looked at Augustus across from him saying, “Our fair lady has my Lord in stitches.” Augustus looked ahead musing, “I’m not surprised, many a time Mistress Brantford has made me laugh.” Winston agreed, “Mind you at one of our expense, but still a hearty laugh.” Spencer said, “Say my Lord, I dare say you’ll be missing her company when you head back out to defeat Gabon. I know we will.” He winked at Augustus asking, “Especially you, right Augustus?” Augustus looked at him replying, “I’d trade you for her in a heartbeat if it were company I was wanting.” Winston chuckled, and Cyan looked at Augustus saying, “Hold your tongue Augustus, Deirdre mustn’t be spoken of that way.” Augustus replied evenly, “Aye my Lord, but I wasn’t meaning it in a bad way. Just friendly company I meant.” Spencer laughed, “That’s true my Lord, we’re never sure about Augustus. He keeps his fantasies to himself.” Cyan glanced at him before watching the road again, and then it fell silent. Prince Ivan gently stroked Adela’s arm asking kindly, “Are you cold my dear? Allow me to wrap this cloak about you.” Adela had been listening to his soft toned voice, but not the question. She didn’t object to being covered by his cloak. With ease he guided the horse with one hand while he used the other to ensure she was warm. She hadn’t been terribly cold, but the thought of being alone in a castle without him seemed to frighten her giving her chills. A moment later, the man Ashley had sent came riding back, “Sergeant, Prince Ivan, I’ve come with instructions from my Lord.” Ashley looked at him, “Tell us.” The man rode his horse around parallel to them as he said, “My Lord requested we let the prisoners continue to walk slowly with several men and the rest catch up. Then we can continue faster before nightfall to Bristol.” Prince Ivan asked, “What of the prisoners? We leave them to journey slowly on the road with the men?” The man nodded, “I think my Lord wishes the prisoners he’s captured to remain to catch up with these and travel together back with enough men to keep them secure. There’s more than enough of us.” Ashley looked at Prince Ivan, “It’s a good reasoning, you could leave some of your men with the prisoners here if you like.” Prince Ivan thought for a moment before nodding, “Yes, a reasonable idea, let’s split up our men and then hurry ahead.” The man Ashley had sent said, “They’re not far ahead Prince Ivan, only minutes by a fast gallop.” Prince Ivan nodded, “Then lets make haste.” Quickly they divided the group, and Ashley chose to remain behind volunteering to remain with all the prisoners. Then the others rode ahead leaving Ashley and the prisoners at a slower pace. Adela wasn’t sure how to take the meeting with the others, they hadn’t seen them for a long while, and without the presence of Earl as their former leader it would be odd. Prince Ivan kept her warm within the cloak, and continued to talk to her gently as they rode along at a faster pace. It wasn’t long before they spotted the other group ahead, and they were noticed by them. Cyan had their group stop to wait for them to catch up. Prince Ivan took in the fact that Cyan had the other woman on his horse as he had Adela. It was obvious they knew who each other was, because as they neared they watched each other with interest. Clement rode his horse with Arthur faster calling out, “To the resistance fighters!” Arthur managed to raise an arm, their old salute to the fighters. From the back of one of the men’s horses Winston raised an arm in salute, “To the resistance fighters!” Spencer and Augustus followed suit as they watched. Adela and Deirdre watched with interest as the reunion began. Prince Ivan stopped his horse alongside Cyan’s and outstretched a hand and in his usual soft-spoken tone introduced, “Prince Ivan Cole, my travel companion Adela Ellis of Liverpool. You must be the Sheriff.” Cyan took his hand nodding, “I am Lord Cyan Barlow Sheriff of Bristol, and with me is Deirdre Brantford of Carlisle. Pleased to meet you Prince Ivan.” Prince Ivan smiled replying gently, “And I, you.” He watched as Adela and Deirdre reached to each other to greet and embrace and withdrew his hand to steady Adela. Cyan did the same while the others tried to reunite from horseback. Winston was busy prodding his rider, “Over there to my sister friend.” Adela released Deirdre to look at her brother, “Winston!” As Winston’s rider moved over Winston grinned, “My beloved sister, Adela you still look beautiful.” Cyan couldn’t disagree with that; Adela had just as much beauty as that of Deirdre. Only his tastes in women kept his sights firmly set on the woman on his horse. Prince Ivan allowed Adela to hug her brother as he said gently, “I couldn’t agree with you more.” Clement rode over to Cyan so he and Arthur could greet Deirdre. There was another flurry of introductions and handshakes while everyone reunited. Finally Cyan said, “We must continue, we’ll leave some men with these here, and make a hasty return to Bristol. It will be dark soon.” Prince Ivan nodded his voice still gentle; “Ashley and the other men with our prisoners will catch up to them soon enough. We however should make haste.” Cyan nodded, and once they had the men divided once again, they set off at a quicker pace. Prince Ivan rode parallel to Cyan while Clement settled for riding between Spencer and Winston. Augustus remained behind them listening to their talk, adding his own input from time to time. Prince Ivan let Adela take Deirdre’s hand while they rode, meanwhile he said to Cyan in his soft tone, “I dare say the thought of being out on the road at dark with the women have me concerned. They need to be in a comfortable bed safe inside the castle walls.” Cyan glanced at Prince Ivan, keeping an eye on Deirdre who appeared pleased to be reunited with Adela again. He answered, “I too, it’s been a trying ordeal for the lot of them, and I for one would like to see them inside the castle walls as well.” Prince Ivan gave a gentle smile that marked his nature, he said gently to Adela, “Now, see my dear, my Lord wishes to see to your safety as well. No need to be afraid if it gets dark.” Adela glanced at him, and then looked again at Deirdre who said to Adela, “It will be safe, Cyan has ensured me of this. We have been well taken care of.” Adela nodded, but didn’t speak. Prince Ivan turned his attention back to Cyan stating softly, “Once there, I should like to let my men and I have a rest before heading out and seeing about this Gabon. I must add his name grates on me, the faster he’s defeated the better I will feel.” Cyan nodded, “I as well, you may have your rest, as well we should too. Then make a strategy to either capture or kill Gabon.” Prince Ivan made a face at the sound of the name, but his gentle voice did not get louder as he agreed, “As will I my Lord.” For a moment they rode in silence before Cyan asked, “Have you heard of any towns your way being infiltrated Prince Ivan?” The gentle prince looked at him again answering slowly and softly, “I haven’t, this is the first I have heard of it. I believe they haven’t been into the towns, just chasing the party. Your two captured men are the first I’ve seen of them.” Cyan nodded, and then concentrated on his horse and Deirdre who still held hands with Adela. Prince Ivan tended to Adela seeing that the cloak kept her warm, and again apologizing for discussing the dismaying situation. Cyan took a shine to the prince’s kind and gentle nature, he wasn’t sure of the man’s intentions, but he was sure that Prince Ivan was sincere about seeing to Adela. Deirdre had been content to sit and watch Adela, as she hadn’t seen her for so long. It was nearing the end of a long day’s ride, and she had no more feisty energy left within her. The Prince seemed pleased that the women were safe, and that he could contend to Adela instead of someone else. His gentle voice soothed them as he told them of his relation to the King, and how he came to his title. Cyan listened quietly with interest to the gentle Prince; the young man would make a quiet and kind King some day. It appeared that was not on the man’s thoughts though; he discussed his thoughts about his duty to see to the towns. He’d not heard that Gabon’s men had been around and it made him eager to go through and find out how the King’s people were doing. To Cyan, it was almost too good to be true, a gentle natured prince willing to help get into battle. He would follow the man closely to see just how serious he was about his duty. |

| Chapter 7 (Enter Bristol)
It was getting dark along the road and that was when the young gentle prince noticed Adela’s sudden uneasiness. Cyan watched as the prince continued in soft tones trying to ease Adela’s fears. Deirdre watched in concern, and then looked at Cyan explaining, “It has been hard on her.” Cyan replied easily, “No need to explain.” Deirdre reached for Adela’s hand, “We will be in Bristol soon, we’re safe Adela.” Prince Ivan turned to look behind him saying kindly, “One of you men back there, ride in front of us. Perhaps Winston you can ride next to us, once Adela here sees you are near by she will feel better.” Cyan turned to look back saying, “Do as he says, it’s safer that way.” The men did as instructed while they did, Prince Ivan asked Cyan, “It’s about ten maybe twenty more minutes, right my Lord?” Cyan nodded, “About that, the only thing to worry of here are the brogues and bandits. They wouldn’t be foolish enough to attack us as soon as they see we’re the king’s men.” Adela looked at Ivan and said in a tiny shaky tone, “At the stream.” He looked at her with a gentle grin, “They didn’t know there was more men, once anyone along here sees there are more they won’t come out from hiding. We had stopped; they only saw a few of us. Not all the men, here on the road they wait to see who’s passing by before moving. They’ll change their mind, besides one look at my Lord here riding through and they’ll think about the gallows instead if they’re caught.” Cyan looked at them nodding, “I dare say you’re right, I don’t take kindly to those that try to harm a woman travelling along the road. Quite a different matter if it were just men, the rules of Bristol are harsher penalties for such crimes.” Adela looked at Deirdre and whispered, “Clement, Arthur and I were attacked on the road before Prince Ivan came to our rescue.” Deirdre asked, “What of the bandits? None were taken prisoner?” Adela replied in whisper, “Annihilated, Prince Ivan and Clement took them. Arthur remained on his horse.” Prince Ivan said quietly to Adela, “Come now, such talk will only upset you. Think with me, if you will, of the beautiful gardens in the towns. There’s some in Bristol I’m sure you and Mistress Brantford would like to see.” Cyan looked at Prince Ivan; “They should remain in the castle where they’ll be safe from attack.” Prince Ivan smiled lightly, “My Lord surely you can’t confine them to the innards of a castle. I’m sure with one of the guards with them they will be absolutely fine.” Deirdre had been about to protest, but allowed Prince Ivan to speak for them. Cyan glanced at the gentle prince again, “We’ll discuss safety later, we don’t want to frighten anyone.” Prince Ivan turned to Adela again speaking softly to her, telling her about the gardens he had seen. Winston remained silent beside them, and Clement listened on the other side, Arthur had been resting. Deirdre decided if Cyan gave her trouble about staying completely confined within castle walls, she would seek out an ally in the young prince. Adela’s head fell back on the young prince’s shoulder as she dozed off, it surprised him, but he merely ensured she was warm within his cloak before concentrating on guiding his horse. It had become quiet now as they continued in to Bristol, it had also become dark. The gentle prince hated that he would have to wake Adela so soon, but they had nearly arrived. Cyan could see the light from the town, and pointed it out to Deirdre who had relaxed when she saw Adela fall asleep. As they neared Cyan let out a sigh of relief, although he kept his guard up, “I thought we’d never get these women here.” Prince Ivan nodded in agreement, but remained still and silent allowing Adela to rest. Winston called from across to Cyan, “Say my Lord, is your fair town of Bristol equipped with luxuries by any chance?” Spencer laughed, and Cyan glanced back at him, “For the King perhaps.” Spencer looked at Winston, “When this is over I’ll take you to my brother’s castle with his remains, and you can rule it.” Winston asked, “Really?” Spencer shrugged, “I’ve got no interest in it, and you’ll have to find your own men. I think Earl’s have been exhausted. Mind you some loyal followers may return.” Prince Ivan took the conversation in interest, he tried to glance back without moving Adela and he asked in his soft tone, “I say, your brother had a castle? Would he be Prince Earl? Would that not make you a Prince as well?” Spencer laughed as he replied, “I would be, but I renounced my title. My brother is dead now, so I’m offering the castle to Winston here. Unless you would all like to share it.” Augustus jested, “Share it? We can barely share the meals together.” Clement looked back at Augustus suggesting, “The castle is bigger, you could eat separately.” Arthur tapped Clement’s arm from behind him, “We’d argue over who would rule it.” Spencer mused, “It’s not like that’s happened before.” Winston asked, “Why won’t you go back and take the job? Without your brother, there should be no conflict in your reason.” Spencer looked at him, “Aye friend there is, too many memories. When it’s over, I go back to my old life away from Hertford.” The young prince said quietly, “Such a tragic loss.” He caught Deirdre’s sudden look and she commented lightly, “Not as tragic as Prince Earl just laying there at the bottom of that bluff.” Cyan said smoothly, “I’ve told you we’ll plan a way to get him out, just as soon as it’s safe to do so.” Prince Ivan looked at him, “If I can be of assistance, please don’t hesitate to let me know.” Cyan nodded, and then turned his attention to the town of Bristol they had neared. Prince Ivan touched Adela’s hand, and said gently into her ear, “We’ve arrived, wake up my dear.” Adela stirred slightly, and Prince Ivan followed Cyan into the town where people suddenly approached with greetings while they stared at the new arrivals. One or two people recognized the young prince and slightly bowed calling out to him. It brought Adela awake, and she watched now as the people came around them as they rode in. Then through the gates of the castle where guards and servants milled about. They suddenly came to them helping to tend with the horses, and see to their needs. As Cyan was about to dismount a guard called to him, “My Lord, Prince Ivan! I have orders from the King.” Prince Ivan looked at the guard, and then tended to Adela, “We must get down now my dear, I will help you. Hold on until I’m down.” As he helped Adela down the guard approached Cyan, “My Lord it’s about some of the towns south of here, the King has sent men out to protect them. He asked that you remain here to guard the castle and nearby towns.” Cyan’s jaw clenched, he didn’t want to remain and do guard duty, he wanted Gabon’s head, and he dismounted and looked as Prince Ivan asked in concern, “How can he assist me in finding this Gabon if he’s here guarding towns?” The guard looked at him answering, “I’m not sure, the King didn’t say my Lord was to be finding anyone.” Prince Ivan asked, “Where is the King, I need to speak with him?” The guard replied, “Not here, he left when the news came about the towns south of here. He’s gone to be near by for quick orders.” Prince Ivan asked, “Who is in charge here then?” The guard looked at Cyan answering; “My Lord is now, it’s the King’s last orders.” Cyan looked at Prince Ivan, “My duty has been given, I must follow it. Leave it, we must get these women settled.” He turned to Deirdre still up on the horse, and held his arms up to help her down. Deirdre would have liked to stay in his arms, but her attention was on Adela next to her and they embraced in excited greeting. Cyan watched as Winston came to them and grabbed them both in a tight hug, before they knew it the entire resistance party grouped around them. Prince Ivan asked Cyan gently, “You were saying something about getting these women settled?” Cyan looked at the young prince who grinned, and he returned the grin nodding, “Let them reunite first.” He looked for the stable hands, and called to them, “See to the horses.” Then he turned to the guard in charge of the area, “There will be prisoners on foot arriving soon, see to it they get put into the cells.” He turned to the servants saying, “Prepare the rooms for our guests, see to it the women have someone on hand for them.” The guard who relayed the King’s message asked, “What would you like me to do my Lord?” Cyan looked at him, “See to it that the prepared rooms are well guarded, these people have been harmed by Gabon’s men. I don’t want any more harm to come to them, especially the women.” The guard nodded, and Cyan looked around, noticing the group of resistance fighters had gone silent. He asked Prince Ivan, “What are they doing now?” Prince Ivan normally gentle tone was filled with solemn sadness; “I believe saying a prayer for Prince Earl, my Lord.” Cyan watched as the group disbanded, and Spencer said quietly, “On behalf of my brother’s memory I want to say if he were here now, he would point out we have made it thus far. We have help, and we will survive and conquer.” Winston nodded, “We finish it for Prince Earl.” The others agreed and repeated, “For Prince Earl.” Then Prince Ivan said to Cyan, “I don’t approve of how this upsets Mistress Ellis.” Cyan nodded, “It’s time to see them in.” Cyan led Deirdre, while Prince Earl tended to Adela who had been emotional over the reunion. Cyan would have preferred to hold Deirdre in his arms again for the night, but he had responsibilities here. Instead he saw her to the room the guards, and servants tended to. It was near the others, and directly across from the room Prince Earl led Adela to. Deirdre didn’t bother to take interest in the room, she watched as Cyan motioned everyone to leave the room. When the door was closed Deirdre said lightly, “I don’t want to keep you, but I do feel badly for your orders conflicting with helping our party.” Cyan took her by the elbows replying gently, “Never mind that for now, ask for anything you like, and then get into bed. I will come by in the morning to see how you are.” Deirdre watched him, before she asked, “What will you do then?” Cyan answered, “By then I hope to have word from the King. Ashley can remain here in charge while I’m gone, I must speak with the Prince as well.” Deirdre nodded, and he released her saying, “It won’t give you the chance to leave here without being noticed though.” She followed him to the door, and smiled lightly at him, “We will reach an agreement by morning.” He looked back at her warning, “Watch what you do around me, my feisty one. The King left me in charge, and as long as we come to terms I have no problem with your mettlesome nature.” Deirdre continued to smile lightly again unintentionally allowing her beautiful aquamarine eyes appear gentle, “I assure you I will not disobey any orders you have given me.” Cyan melted, he would have a handful with her to contend with. He could have kissed her, instead he said quietly, “I’ve ordered you to stay within the confines of this castle where you’ll be safe. We’ve reached no compromise on this, and until I find out if Gabon’s men are near here, there won’t be a compromise. Is that understood?” Deirdre nodded, and then said quietly, “However, we have been through the road to here without contact from Gabon’s men, I think it’s safe to assume they aren’t near. We shouldn’t hesitate in a compromise, I’m sure Prince Ivan and Adela have reached one already.” Cyan narrowed his eyes; her beauty had trapped him. He replied evenly, “I will speak with Prince Ivan on the matter, until then there is no compromise.” He was about to open the door to leave when she took his hand gently stopping him, “Cyan, wait.” He turned and looked back at her, waiting to hear what she had to say. She smiled gently, “Although we may squabble over differences, I do truly care about the safety of all my friends. Since you have been so good to me, and agreed to become my protector with such bravery I will worry about you. If and when you do go, please know that I will be concerned for your well being.” His dark blue eyes flickered, it was like being asked to dance and then suddenly there was no floor underneath him. This woman would have him wrapped around her finger within a heartbeat. He could see by the sincerity in her eyes though, that she spoke the truth. He squeezed the hand she had taken and replied quietly, “Then you will understand that I feel the same about your safety, and I appreciate your concern. Perhaps if there is time tomorrow we will discuss many things. For now, I must see to the castle, and you need your rest.” She nodded, and then she let him go. He allowed the servant back into her room before he headed off; he needed to see to many things. Prince Ivan’s piercing blue eyes followed Adela as she took in the room, she marveled at the size and comfort before asking him, “Have you ever seen such a beautiful room?” Prince Ivan grinned; he had seen many a grand room, but none as beautiful because Adela was in it. He smiled lightly at her as he watched her, “My dear any room would look beautiful with you in it, this one never looked better.” Adela looked at him and sheepishly smiled, “I’m sorry, you’re a Prince, of course you have. Thank you for your kind words.” She looked at the dressing gowns asking, “Are these for me?” Prince Ivan’s gentle grin widened, “Of course my dear, they are to make you comfortable here. They will bring you whatever you desire.” He followed her to the window, watching as she peered out and said, “Bristol is bigger than I imagined.” Prince Ivan gently slid an arm around her waist saying quietly, “Now my dear, you must promise me you are not to leave the castle without myself or a guard of some kind. You can look around the town, but not alone. Is that understood clearly?” Adela looked at him replying, “Oh of course Prince Ivan, I wouldn’t dream of going alone.” She touched his hand on her saying, “I’d rather wait for you.” Prince Ivan smiled modestly, “Please my dear, call me Ivan, and I am pleased you will wait for me.” Adela thought for a moment before asking slowly, “Will you be leaving?” It was obvious she didn’t want him to leave, and he smiled gently at her replying, “I will let you know when I must go, I must speak with Sheriff Barlow regarding many matters at hand. Do know that I will be near by, you can send for me.” He walked her gently back to the table set up for Adela to wash up continuing in his quiet gentle tone, “Do take care when you wash up not to get a draft from the window. Try to get some rest it’s rather late and you were so tired on our way in. There is a guard outside, and I will let the servant come in and see to you. Later on I will come check on you, I promise I won’t be far.” Adela looked away in sadness, wishing he could stay, the young prince calmed her so well she had been dependant on him. He followed her movement, watching her hazel eyes threaten to spill with fresh tears. He gently pulled her to him, and held her saying, “Now, now, my dear. Don’t upset yourself over my leaving, the servant can stay with you as long as you feel you need. I could even send for your brother to stay with you if you wish.” Adela shook her head; none of them could replace the gentle prince with her now. His calm quiet, yet strong nature held effect over her. He realized that, at that moment and sighed lightly, as much as he wanted to remain with the lovely Adela he had to see to his men, and talk to Cyan. When she slowly let him go, she said quietly, “I shouldn’t keep you.” Prince Ivan looked down at her, and caressed her cheek saying gently, “I will return, later tonight to see how you are.” She stared now at his intense blue eyes as she nodded, “You have no idea how much I will miss your company.” Prince Ivan smiled lightly as he replied softly, “Alas my dear, but I do.” He released his cloak from it’s clasp around him and then draped it around Adela saying; “To remind you, you are not far from me, nor my thoughts.” She held it closed around her in surprise as she welcomed it. He hugged her again lightly saying, “When you start to feel afraid hold it close around you and remember this moment.” Adela closed her eyes and held the moment in her mind, she would do as he asked. Gently he released her saying, “Now get cleaned up, and into bed. I will be back to check on you as soon as I can.” She nodded, and he gently kissed her cheek before he said in a near whisper, “I will get the servant for you.” He crossed the room, and opened the door beckoning to the waiting servant. When the woman entered Prince Ivan said, “See to it she’s comfortable, and send for me if I’m needed.” The woman nodded and Prince Ivan looked at Adela, with a smile and a wave he said gently, “Take care of yourself now my dear.” She returned the smile and wave watching as he left, and closed the door behind him. Moving like he was on fire, Prince Ivan hurried off in search of Cyan. He paused and looked at one of the guards his gentle tone filled with urgency, “Say there, have you seen Sheriff Barlow?” The guard nodded, “I did, he was seeing to things here, and then he was to head out for the arrival of the prisoners.” Prince Ivan nodded and thought for a moment before asking in the same tone, “Has he said he’d like to see me, I am Prince Ivan?” The guard made a bow, “Sorry Prince Ivan, and no he didn’t, but it isn’t hard to find him around here.” Prince Ivan nodded, and replied, “Well then if you do see him again, tell him I am looking for him.” The guard nodded, and Prince Ivan again continued in his hurried search for Cyan. |

| Chapter 8 (Questioning & Planning)
Prince Ivan headed for the cold dark, dreary cells of the castle looking for their prisoners. There he found Cyan already in starting to question them, and Prince Ivan interrupted politely, “I beg you pardon, but I really did want to be here for this. I’ve been looking for you my Lord.” Cyan looked at Prince Ivan musing, “I thought you’d be needing your rest, I’m sorry to go ahead without your presence. You’ve not missed much though.” Prince Ivan looked at him and nodded as he said gently, “A misjudgment on your part, as I assure you as people working for this Gabon most certainly have my attention. I must have an end to this at once.” He looked at the captured man who looked at him suddenly at the mention of Gabon. Stepping closer to the man he added coldly, “That’s right Gabon is going to be defeated, what have you to say about that?” The man was unsure about the remark by the prince, although his voice had been cold it was still a gentle quiet that didn’t strike fear into him. Cyan watched with interest as the young prince nodded, as he continued coldly, “Nothing to say, have you? Then I assure you; you not only answer to me, but also to my Lord here. Then to the King, and I’m sure there will be gallows that will suit your needs that will be the last thing you’ll answer to.” Cyan touched Prince Ivan’s shoulder, and then asked the prisoner, “What have you to say for yourself?” The prisoner said testily, “The day you have Gabon’s head is the day a Gabon follower will thrust his sword into your backs.” The other prisoner next to him agreed, “You’ll not stop him, he has too many men and plenty resources.” Prince Ivan cringed at the sound of Gabon’s name again, he looked at Cyan in disgust, “I come to hate that man more and more by the minute.” Cyan nodded, but remained silent as he watched the prisoners so sure that Gabon would win. He watched the young prince as he stared coldly at the two prisoners asking calmly, “You have nothing but the gallows ahead of you, why not speak now and clear your soiled conscience?” Cyan watched as one of the men said, “Gabon will have your head before you can have his. That’s why we’re loyal to him, he’ll still win. Hang us if you must, but Gabon still wins.” Prince Ivan gritted his teeth at the sound of Gabon’s name, and then he retorted, “His followers will either be dead or in stocks waiting for the gallows. He can’t have everyone on his side, especially with King Edmund against him.” The two prisoners looked at each other, and Cyan asked, “Why are the men headed south? Just to chase the party we rescued from your attacks, or because he’s trying to gain more land?” The two men looked at him and one said, “He needs no land, he only needs more followers, and he has plenty. We were sent to stop resistance fighters, and there are plenty of our types of groups out as well. They’re all out there butchering those that oppose Gabon.” The name grated on the young prince again, the threat angered him and his intense blue eyes blazed as he took the man that spoke by front of his shirt, “Slaughtering thousands of innocents will not get him more loyal followers. It will cause people to join in fear, and I assure you I will strike the fear of God into any man that chooses to follow this Gabon, I will defeat him if it’s the last thing I do!” The prisoner broke out in a sweat and his jaw trembled, Prince Ivan lowered his voice, as he continued coldly, “Don’t delay the inevitable. Tell me where to find him and before your neck is snapped in the noose I’ll bring you your precious Gabon’s on the end of my sword.” Cyan didn’t intervene; the two prisoner’s attention was fully on the young prince. As gentle as he was with those he liked, this was one side of him that Cyan found dangerous. The prisoner flinched for a moment before he said reluctantly, “Middlesbrough.” Prince Ivan repeated breezily, “Middlesbrough.” The other prisoner looked at him adding, “He moves about though he likes Middlesbrough, he’s there the most. It’s fully infiltrated with his followers.” Cyan asked, “What other towns have been fully infiltrated?” The second prisoner looked at him, “Can’t say, we’ve only been in Middlesbrough where we were given our orders. Perhaps further north, perhaps Scotland there are many more towns around we have infiltrated. Gabon has plenty of followers, it’s either follow him or die.” Prince Ivan released the first prisoner and looked closely at the second one, it was obvious to Cyan that the mention of Gabon’s name irritated the prince. He stared closely at the man asking, “Are you a coward?” The prisoner smirked, “I fought for Gabon, how can you accuse me of that.” Prince Ivan pointed out; “You fought for him, but too coward to fight against him. You are a coward, I follow my ruler, you follow a massacrer in fear.” Cyan put a hand on the young prince’s shoulder, “Prince Ivan, enough, don’t provoke him. He hangs in the gallows, don’t dirty your sword.” The prince composed himself and looked at Cyan nodding, in his regular gentle tone he agreed, “You’re right my Lord.” Cyan looked at the two prisoners asking, “What else can you tell us?” The first prisoner looked at him, “That’s it.” The second one added, “Except you’re doomed.” Prince Ivan was about to turn on him again, when Cyan took his elbow, “Prince Ivan, come with me.” Prince Ivan looked at the prisoners before he allowed himself to be drawn out of the cold damp cells. Once back up in the warmth of the castle Cyan said, “What they know makes no difference. Winston has said he thinks Gabon is in Middlesbrough.” He paused when he looked at the prince’s scowling face, and then continued quieter, “My apologies, I’ll try to refrain from using the name.” The prince motioned with a hand, “Never mind I’ll take something for the indigestion it gives me, go on…please.” Cyan looked at the prince in amusement, before he continued, “Our job is to get the King to allow my sergeant to remain in charge here. Then we can get about the other towns near by and set up men to protect them, if they haven’t been liberated we should keep it that way until G…” Cyan paused to think of a name, but the young prince asked gently, “Until he is caught, and hung?” Cyan nodded, “Yes, we can move through the towns north until we find resistance. This way they will be stopped long before they can get this far.” Prince Ivan nodded, “I agree, a good plan. Then we can stop the rest of the men infiltrating the towns until we reach…him.” Cyan nodded, and then asked, “Now how do we change the King’s mind?” Prince Ivan grinned lightly at Cyan, “Please, allow me the honors. I will send a man out to the King, and let him know I have men I will leave here with your sergeant. If the king wants to send more people here we’ll merely tell him they would be better used protecting near by towns.” Cyan nodded, “We also need to see that the men of the towns are willing and able to protect them.” Prince Ivan nodded, “That too, and believe me I would never leave my dear Adela alone here if I didn’t think it was safe.” Cyan smiled lightly as he asked, “Are you permitting her to leave the castle in the company of the guards?” Prince Ivan replied gently as he mused, “No, she prefers my company, the dear woman. Alas I won’t be around much to escort her.” Cyan replied quietly, “I haven’t allowed Deirdre outside of these walls without knowing how the other towns around here fair with those men.” Prince Ivan replied easily, “A tad overprotective are we? I do say you mustn’t smother a woman it only makes them want out even more. Although I do agree heartily if there is danger around here I wouldn’t allow it, I would feel like I was keeping my dear Adela a prisoner inside these walls.” He looked around before continuing in his gentle tone, “It’s why I never really cared to stay near my uncle the King. His castles loom about becomes constricting. It grates on my nerves as much as that-that name.” Cyan understood, and nodded watching as the young prince continued, “Anyway, we mustn’t harp on such matters, I will agree that if it isn’t safe around here the women shouldn’t be past the safety of the castle walls. If not I do so hope they go out and enjoy the town the air, the garden.” Cyan nodded, “I’ll have to agree to that as much as it worries me.” Prince Ivan looked at him with a grin asking gently “Would it be, because your lady is a fiery charge or just general concern that harm could come to them if they are outside the castle?” Cyan looked at Prince Ivan, a smile creeping over his face, “A bit of both I suppose. However since we both have the same goals, I would like to keep in agreement with you.” Prince Ivan smiled gently in return asking, “You want to work together, and not bicker over who should be in charge?” Cyan nodded, “We both have our pull with the King, however it’s a waste of time. Put all differences whatever they may be aside, and work together on the same goal.” Prince Ivan nodded, “I suppose it would be easier, I could still tell my men what to do, as could you, yours.” Cyan nodded, “Precisely.” Prince Ivan looked at Cyan again musing quietly, “I can agree to that, unless the rules change. We should however settle on who gets that pernicious man.” He tapped his chin continuing slowly, “I was thinking that it could be whoever gets that virulent man first. However if one should find the other in need of help…” He let his quiet voice trail off, and Cyan replied, “It won’t bother me if you finish him, as long as I get a few licks in.” Prince Ivan looked at him, “Precisely what I was going to say!” Cyan watched him closely before asking, “Will you send out a man to see the King, or should I?” Prince Ivan replied, “I will, it will show my uncle I am on top of things back here.” Cyan watched as Prince Ivan thought quietly to himself, “I’ll send a man out next, with instructions. Then see to my men, and then I must check on Adela.” Cyan listened with interest, wondering why he needed to check on Adela. He wondered if he should check on Deirdre. He did want to get to his own bed, but it wouldn’t hurt to see that she had settled. He hadn’t planned on it, but if the young prince thought it to be a good idea, he would too. He watched as Prince Ivan asked him suddenly, “If I need you later, can I find you easily in here?” Cyan nodded, “I won’t be back at the cells, I’ll be in here.” Prince Ivan nodded, “Then I will go see to things.” Cyan watched as the young prince took off as if on fire, he decided that he would remain on the prince’s good side as long as possible. Cyan decided to wash up before he did anything more, in his room he refreshed his clothes before heading back out. A guard stopped him, “My Lord, Prince Ivan has just informed me to let you know one of his men have left to deliver a message to the King, and his other men have been seen to.” Cyan nodded, “Good, if you see him again, tell him I hope he finds his own room adequate. I will be around the castle.” As he continued he guessed the Prince was on a hasty mission to complete all tasks before turning in. He had to give the young man credit for taking control of what he wanted done with spirited measure. In a way, he wondered if the gentle prince would fair better with Deirdre, than Adela. The thought wakened a jealousy within him, and he shook his head for allowing himself to think as he had. Instead he continued to Deirdre’s room and knocked lightly before entering, he expected her to be sleeping. He was alarmed to find she wasn’t even in the room, and he looked about in urgency. Then he closed the door, and knocked on Adela’s door. When there was no response he looked in, and found the woman sleeping with what appeared to be the young prince’s cloak around her. He eased the door shut and looked at the first guard asking, “Where is she?” Nodding a head to Deirdre’s room the guard replied, “Stepped out about twenty minutes or so ago my Lord.” Cyan repeated, “Where is she?” The guard shrugged, “Sorry my Lord, she just said she was going for a short walk and would be back soon.” Cyan asked urgently, “Which direction did she go?” The guard pointed from the way he had come, and he had not seen her go by. He looked, and then said, “If you see her again, tell her to remain in her room until I speak with her.” He didn’t wait to hear the guard’s reply; he was too concerned with finding Deirdre. Prince Ivan glanced around his room, and took in the items. He wasn’t big on fancy things, but he did need to see he had everything. He washed up, and then looked around again, suddenly wishing Adela shared his room. The poor woman had been terrified of the bandits and that miserable Gabon that he filled with rage to destroy them all and free the fear from her. He sighed as he washed up; and then changed. He would go see that Adela was fine before he could sleep. He hurried to finish, and then left for Adela’s room. Inside he noted she slept peacefully with his cloak surrounding her. Silently he stalked over to her bed and paused near her, watching her breathing lightly in what appeared to be a peaceful slumber. Gently he sat at the end of her bed watching her, and thinking about the threat of Gabon looming above their heads. It angered him to see her afraid, the man’s name grated more and more on his nerves with each thought of him. The young prince could not understand the twisted minds of men trying to harm a woman, and of all women a beautiful timid one that meant no harm to a soul. He sighed as he touched her feet under the covers nearest him; he had been up for hours now and fatigue set in. Intending to sit up and watch over the lovely woman, he instead found himself dozing off to sleep at the foot of the bed. |

The walls had already closed in on Deirdre, she had to leave the room, and look around the castle. It brought back memories of her chained past, and forced her to search for any open areas of the castle looking for freedom from the walls. She found the largest of the windows in the castle, and sat in the ledge drinking in the cool night air. She closed her eyes trying to remember that she was not back in Morpeth where she really came from, she was no longer Princess Deirdre Bryant of Morpeth, and she was now Deirdre Brantford of Carlisle. Her parents, could no longer force her within the walls of their castle and marry some lame knighted prince because they thought it was best for her. She had left all that behind, and she had joined the resistance fighters against Gabon. She had made new friends that didn’t treat her like a spoiled princess, and she had lost her first protector. Although Cyan had become her second protector since leaving the security of her parent’s castle, he had seen her for who she was. She enjoyed her new life even if it was filled with Gabon’s attacks. As long as nobody knew who she really was, she would be fine on her own. She could decide who she wanted to marry, and if it wasn’t a prince too bad for her parents. She had been sorry to meet Prince Ivan too late in her life to ask her parents about him, he had seemed to be a nice young prince suitable for her. Yet, not as exciting as her new protector Cyan. The energy that flowed through him, and coursed onto her brought her different feelings than she’d had with anyone else before. Sucking in the cool night air and closing her eyes again she could relax now in thought of the strong Sheriff in charge of the town…she thought she could hear his voice now too. She paused in her thoughts, taking in the night air as she strained to listen. Her ears perked further as she heard a voice sounding a lot like Cyan’s, and it wasn’t pleased. Then she heard footsteps on the stairs near the window she sat at, and her eyes snapped open in fear. She hadn’t expected him to come looking for her, and here he came around the corner in an urgent manner pausing in a start at her appearance at the window. Deirdre bit her lower lip in worry as she watched, and didn’t move. Cyan closed the distance slowly asking, “Do you realize how many doors I’ve knocked on trying to find you this last hour?” Her worried look increased as he continued firmly, “I dare say Augustus isn’t happy, and Spencer jested at me about searching the town if I didn’t find you in here!” His voice grew venting his worry and anger as he spoke, and Deirdre didn’t try to stop it as he went on, “I’ve been on a frenzy throughout the entire castle searching for you. I've sent out men and worried that maybe you had gone out the castle gates and into town into who knows what! I’ve been beside myself with worry over you, your first few hours here and missing already! You can’t imagine how upset I’ve been!” He grasped her arm and pulled her towards him continuing, “No less you’re almost clear out of the window, catching a chill no doubt! Perhaps planning a route of escape from the castle seeing as though you’ve got a good view!” He held her by the elbows to him and she watched in stunned silence as he continued the same excited edge in his tone, “When I found you missing from your room, did you not think I would be out looking through every nook and cranny in this castle for you? After all we discussed about how you have concern for me, and I told you I had the same, yet you still disappear like this? Without a single word? Do you know what that made me think? Just a walk, and you’re half way across the castle in the window catching a draft!” He pulled her close to him in upset finishing, “Anything could have happened to you! Anything! What have you to say for yourself?” Deirdre didn’t reply; she hadn’t expected him to finish his rant. She watched his dark blue eyes watching her intensely while he waited for her reply. She hadn’t been afraid he would harm her, but shocked at his sudden aberration. Deirdre realized he was waiting for an answer, but had trouble forming an answer in her mind. At least it was a distraction from the castle walls closing in on her again; she mentally kicked herself for wasting time thinking about that. Cyan squeezed her arms, asking, “Well? What have you to say for yourself?” Deirdre replied lamely, “I wanted to take a walk.” Cyan stooped to look her closely in the eye as he asked exasperatedly, “Take a walk? After such a long journey walking south and further on horseback, you wanted to take another journey? That’s the best you’ve come up with?” Deirdre said slowly, “Cyan, I-.” How could she explain herself without looking even lamer, she continued, “I didn’t know you would notice I’d taken a walk.” Cyan watched her closely trying to read her eyes as he asked, “Didn’t know I would notice? That’s the best you can come up with as to how you ended up here? Without someone to watch over you as well?” Deirdre studied his intense gaze before she said, “I-I needed to get familiar with the castle so I wouldn’t get lost.” The excuse sounded lame even to her, and Cyan nodded as he asked intensely, “I see, and you didn’t want to use up all your remaining time by studying the castle so you wouldn’t get lost because you had something else important here to do?” His mocking caught her off guard again, and she couldn’t think of any viable excuse for being out on a walk besides the real reason. That she couldn’t tell him because then he would know she was a princess, something she would never tell anyone. Deirdre replied quietly, “I’m sorry I’ve upset you, really I am. I wanted to go for a walk, and look around. I saw this window and stopped for air, and the view. It-it became confining in my room and I wasn’t tired.” Cyan asked, “And you didn’t think it was important to tell anyone?” Deirdre replied quickly, “I, myself had no idea where I would wander to, I didn’t know what to tell anyone. I was coming back, I wasn’t going outside the castle.” She looked away from his intense stare and he followed her movement asking in exasperation, “That’s all you have to say for yourself? Woman you will kill me!” Deirdre worried that he would keep her under harder restraints inside the castle, it was the kind of thing her parents did. She closed her eyes in fear awaiting the verbal onslaught she was sure would come. Instead he pulled her tightly to him, and let out an exasperated sigh. She could hear his heart pounding as if trying to burst through his chest, as he held her tightly to him it started to slow. She realized she had scared him, and she felt bad. Deirdre looked up at him apologizing, “I am truly sorry for worrying you, if I had known I certainly would have asked someone along, and told the guards. I didn’t think it would upset you to wander through the castle alone, I wasn’t going where I shouldn’t have been. I assume the guards would have stopped me if I had gone where I wasn’t supposed to…even outside.” She looked away again letting her head rest against his chest, listening to his heart again. Deirdre wondered if there would be another verbal onslaught as she thought that everything she’d told him sounded lame. Instead she felt his hand travel up her back through her hair and past her neck. It came to a rest at the back of her head where he pressed her gently to him saying quietly, “Never mind.” It was obvious he had calmed completely, and relieved he’d found her, and unharmed. He didn’t know what to do with her, but the scare he’d just gone through worried him. He’d never truly worried about anyone missing, especially within the confines of the castle, but Deirdre was different. He’d rescued the woman from an assailant’s sword, protected her with his every being. For her to disappear without reason was enough to set off alarms within him, now that he had her safely in his arms he didn’t know what to do with her. Deirdre offered, “It is late, you will want your rest. I will return to my room so you won’t worry.” Cyan released her and she looked at him, he said quietly, “No, you’ve come to find a window you enjoy.” Taking her hand, he walked over to the window and took a seat on the ledge continuing gently, “You can enjoy it with me for a while.” She followed him, and he made space before helping to hoist her up with him. He pulled her to him, so she could lean on him while he asked quietly, “Would you like me tell you what you see out there in the town?” Deirdre couldn’t see much due to the dark night, she shook her head, “There isn’t much really to see, I’d rather wait for you to show me around some day.” Where his arms rested around her, her hair draped across and his hand trailed through it gently. He recalled the young prince’s words ‘you mustn’t smother a woman it only makes them want out even more’ and what he had said about keeping Adela ‘a prisoner inside these walls’ Cyan replied quietly, “I will see about the towns near by here come dawn. If you can manage to keep yourself occupied in here until I return I will show you around tomorrow. Following that, if you wish to go out with the company of one of the guards, or your friends you may if Gabon’s men are not near the town.” She looked at him, and found Cyan had been studying her, his voice dropped as he continued, “You’ve seen how I reacted to your disappearance, if I should return here and find you missing you know how I will feel. If one of Gabon’s men manage to capture you, or kill you I would be beside myself with torment.” Deirdre touched his hand, “I promised you I would remain in the castle, I will until you show me about. I will stay if Gabon’s men are near; I understand the dangers Cyan. I see now how scared I made you, I am sorry.” He took her by the back of the head again, and this time he kissed her forehead lightly before clasping her to him again saying, “Precious one I should not have been so cross with you, please understand that I only did so out of concern. You can walk about in here as much as you like, as long as someone knows you are unharmed in here.” Deirdre was looking outside again; she longed to tell him about her claustrophobic days forcing her to remain inside her parent’s castle in Morpeth. She couldn’t because she was sure his duty would be to return her to Morpeth where she would be forced to marry a prince she disliked. She wondered what it would be like if she married Cyan instead, surely he wouldn’t keep her confined after Gabon was gone. She could even manage to put up with travelling through town all the time with a guard if he wanted. Deirdre sighed it may never happen, although it was a good dream. Cyan watched her asking gently, “What is it? If you wish to sit here alone you may, just tell the guard where you are and to leave you be.” Deirdre replied, “No, it is not that, I don’t really mind staying within the castle if it’s dangerous. I’m not that mettlesome that I would walk out into the danger of Gabon. It’s just when it’s over, I’ve traveled so far and come to care for all my friends and especially you. It’s what to do afterward Cyan.” She glanced at him, before looking back out the window continuing softly, “I’m torn on what to do, I would expect my friends would return home. I’m certain I would rather remain than join them.” Cyan smiled lightly, and stroked her arm with one hand saying, “Nobody is forcing you to leave or go precious one, that decision is your own. Although my influence may change that decision, as I would rather you stayed on here with me.” Deirdre looked at him suddenly asking, “Really?” Cyan nodded, “I can’t have gone to all this trouble to see you to safety and not want to keep you from harm forever. As mettlesome as you may be, I’ve taken the job of your protector and why not for as long as I live and breathe?” Deirdre’s spirits rose, if Cyan took her for his own and they married she would never have to see Morpeth again. She asked suddenly, “After Gabon is gone, would you allow me out through the town on my own?” Cyan replied mischievously, “It would depend on your spin on things.” His dark blue eyes held the mischievous tone from his voice and Deirdre knew then that they would always be able to find a compromise over their squabbles. She reached gently to touch his chin as she replied, “Why Sheriff you have your own spin on things too you know.” He admired her smile, and was about to lean forward to kiss her when he heard Ashley call, “My Lord? Are you about?” They both turned at the sound of his voice and Cyan called, “Aye Ashley, here, with Deirdre.” Ashley hurried to see them saying in a relieved tone, “Ah there you are my Lord, I was just coming to tell you we hadn’t found her. I’m so pleased to know she’s unharmed.” Cyan nodded, “I’m sorry to not call off the search right away as soon as I found her. However seeing as though you are about, perhaps you could do so for me.” Ashley nodded, “Aye my Lord” He smiled at Deirdre, “I’m pleased to know you’re alright mistress, I’ll let the others know.” He continued on, and Deirdre looked at Cyan, “I’ve caused a lot of trouble.” Cyan agreed, “Concern, however you’re still new to Bristol. In time you will understand how to go about accordingly here. Until then, one scare a day from you is all I can withstand, agreed?” Deirdre smiled lightly, “I agree, and will try to do better. Perhaps one scare a week.” Cyan smiled at this; then he looked out the window noticing Augustus crossing the courtyard to the castle gates in a hurry. Cyan called to him, “I say Augustus, where are you off to in such a hurry?” Augustus turned and looked up at them in the window, he peered through the darkness asking, “Is that our fair Deirdre up there with you?” Cyan called back, “It is.” Augustus shook his head, then thrust his hands on his hips and headed back into the castle. Cyan and Deirdre laughed and Cyan asked, “You don’t suppose Spencer got on him about looking for you, do you?” Deirdre nodded, and continued to laugh, then she tried to stop saying, “I shouldn’t really. He worries over me just like the others.” Cyan replied, “A bitter man, he is.” Deirdre nodded, “He’s seen so much in his time. One really can’t blame him.” Deirdre took his hand asking suddenly, “Would you like to see me back to my room now? Before I get tired and fall asleep here.” Cyan closed his hand around hers, “Of course, I’m sure you’ve caught a good enough draft here now.” He smiled at her as they left the window and headed back to her room. |

| Chapter 10 (Prince in Irresolution)
The young prince had been asleep for nearly an hour when Adela stirring woke him; he sat up in a start and looked at her. He couldn’t remember what he had been dreaming, but he recalled it had something to do with Adela. Forgetting the dream, he let relief wash over him as he watched her safe in bed still sleeping. His cloak had slid from one of her shoulders in her movement, and the young prince moved gently on the bed to adjust it back. Dreamily, she felt the movement and reached for his hand, he allowed it to her. Adela remained asleep, so he didn’t move to wake her. Instead he watched her, and again tried to recall his dream. He seemed to recall it had something to do with the castle and Adela, but couldn’t remember what. He was so tired, and he moved without stirring his hand from Adela and lay next to her trying to think. A moment later, the gentle prince fell back to sleep again. It was near dawn when Cyan awoke, and tried to recall where he was, and how he’d gotten there. His mind was still in a fog when he noticed Deirdre beside him asleep under the covers in her dressing gown. He couldn’t recall why he had stayed next to her during the night, and noting that he was still dressed from when he changed the night before he guessed he had fallen asleep. Then he remembered her disappearance, and the rest came back quickly. After seeing her to the room, she asked that he remain until she fell asleep. He recalled admiring what form he could see behind the dressing screen as she got into her gown. Then ensuring she was tucked warmly into the bed, he guessed while he had been holding his warmth close to her he’d fallen asleep. Trying to rub the sleep from his head, he sat up slowly trying not to wake Deirdre. Running a hand through his brownish blonde wavy short hair he glanced at the window noticing it was not yet dawn. He had work to do, and although he would love to lie next to the beautiful woman he could not expend the time. He vowed one day he would, and that one day would be utter bliss. With barely a hint of movement he left the bed, and paused to watch Deirdre as she slept. One of her delicate hands were tucked up under her chin, her hair lay tousled lightly about her. A suspicious look crept over his face as he wondered how such a woman could look just as beautiful when she slept. She must have known she looked so attractive and sweet when she slept. He couldn’t decide, and let the matter drop; it was only preventing him from leaving. He bent over and lightly kissed her on the head, she didn’t stir, so he quietly left. Out in the hall he noticed the guard watching him, and he went over asking, “Has any word come back from the King?” The guard shook his head, and then grinned, “No my Lord, but I see you and the young prince have kept the women happy for the night.” Cyan shook his head; “It’s not what you think.” Then he asked, “Prince Ivan is with Adela?” The guard nodded, “Aye my Lord, sorry to think otherwise.” Cyan shook his head, “Keep it to yourself, I’ll be seeing to heading up a team to the towns after a breakfast. If Prince Ivan hasn’t found me by then, please tell him what I’m doing. It’s up to him if he wishes to come; I don’t want to disturb him. I won’t be leaving the castle, so I’ll be easy to find.” The guard nodded, “Yes my Lord.” Cyan headed off, and made his rounds choosing men to head to the towns with. He decided to set them off in groups to the different towns to cover more areas at a time. Giving specific instructions to each group leader, before deciding the towns immediate south that he would check himself. He wished he knew if Prince Ivan would be taking part, but he let the young prince have his rest. It wouldn’t alter his plans by much if the prince decided he too wanted to join them. He was just heading to see that the stable hands knew what the task was that morning when he noticed the guard at the gate letting in Bristol’s chief weapons and arms maker, and old friend Ben Webster. Ben called out to him, “Cyan! Just the person I was looking for.” Cyan paused from heading to the stable hands and waited for Ben asking, “Me? Why?” Ben approached in a hurry replying, “I heard about your endeavor on the road home, I wondered if I could be of assistance in any way.” Cyan motioned for him to follow him to the stables saying, “Perhaps, I don’t know how much you have heard, but I can fill you in. First I must see that the horses are ready for the teams heading out today.” Ben followed along asking, “How can I be of help? My work?” Cyan glanced at him, “We have so many spare weapons and armor, some we don’t use. The ones that need mending, you take care of.” Ben replied, “I’ve caught up on that though, if you have any that need tending to I will take them.” They paused at the stables where Cyan asked a worker, “Where’s the main hand?” The worker mucking a stall looked up at him answering, “Still asleep my Lord.” Cyan replied ordering quickly, “Wake him, we must have the horses ready for the teams of men heading out to the towns today. Tell him prepare the freshest horses first, there will be teams of five heading out to all the nearest towns. Myself and Prince Ivan’s horses should be prepared as well as the Prince’s men’s horses.” The hand’s eyes popped open wide in surprise as he said, “Yes my Lord, I’ll go wake him and tell him immediately.” Cyan watched the hand go before turning back to the castle and Ben followed asking, “So it’s true Prince Ivan is here?” Cyan nodded, “He found the other half of the party we discovered and helped bring them back here. There’s a man named Gabon…and try not to mention his name around the Prince. He’s sent men out to take over towns, he’s been annihilating people and chasing any resistance parties like the one we rescued.” Cyan glanced at Ben as they continued back to the front of the castle, and Cyan went on, “This Gabon has been heading our way, we intend to find out how many towns his men have been through around here, and start putting up defenses. We want to arm the men of the towns, perhaps even show them a thing or two about protecting them as we need our main forces to stop Gabon’s men in the more stricken areas and to get to Gabon. So old friend you know how you will be needed, if you’re up for the task.” Ben nodded, “Why Cyan, how could you say ‘if’ of course I am! I will make as much weapons and armor I can for you to dispense as you see fit. I would like to be of more help than that though.” Cyan paused in the main foyer of the castle to look at Ben, “Your skill is in your work, I don’t want you fighting any battles unless you’re needed to here. If you want to help, do that. Keep an eye on things here. We brought back two women, one whom I care very much what happens to her. The other is under the eye of Prince Ivan; both nearly struck down out there. While I’m away I need all the extra eyes I can get.” Ben said quietly, “I see, and I will. I understand the importance in the matter.” Cyan asked, “Do you?” Ben smiled lightly, “I’ve known you a long time Cyan, one thing I know about you, is that when someone means something deeply to you, it’s vital to be protected.” Cyan nodded, “Good, then you know. Know this too though, from keeping watch over Deirdre I’ve learned she can be mettlesome. I’m never quite sure what to expect of her, however she has agreed to remain in the castle until we are more informed regarding Gabon’s men. If they aren’t near here, she can travel about the town with someone watching her.” Ben smiled, “Ah, so it’s this mistress; a feisty woman you’re seeing to. I see I will have to keep my eyes and ears open around here.” Cyan grinned, “You shall, now I would recommend you see to the men for fittings of armor, or new weapons before heading back to work, and please do see to Prince Ivan’s men. Also I’m unsure if the resistance party will be joining us in any endeavors, so I would recommend they get suited accordingly by you if so.” Ben nodded, and then asked, “Will you send word when you’re gone? I mean if for a while to see to-.” He paused and then whispered, “Gabon.” Cyan grinned, “I will, I must do so anyway. Ashley will be in charge if anything happens while I’m away. I will leave instructions with him, and I will discuss the matter with Deirdre before informing you of how things will be handled.” Ben nodded, and then touched Cyan’s arm, “Take care.” Cyan nodded, “And you.” They parted from the foyer in separate directions with their tasks in mind. Prince Ivan awoke to find his arm around Adela and looked at the sleeping beauty next to him. He looked at the window; the sun was starting to rise up into the sky. He needed to get to work, but he looked at Adela. She had taken his hand in hers, and held it clutched to her. He debated on lying there, or going. He needed to go, shifting slightly he noticed she moved. He hated to wake her, and then leave. He continued to move as gently as possible, lightly pulling his hand away. He managed to get himself free of her and off the bed without waking her. When he tucked his cloak around her, her eyes opened. Stooping beside the bed to her he said softly, “Oh I did so hope you wouldn’t wake.” Her hazel eyes focused on him, in curiosity and he continued gently, “My dear I have to see to things now, I must go.” Adela asked in concern, “Aren’t you coming back?” He saw the fear in her eyes, and etched across her face. His heart squeezed for a moment knowing his absence caused the fear, he replied softly, “I will always come back to you, I must help see that the people in the towns around us are safe too. I have a duty, but I will be back. We can talk when I do return, you will be safe here.” Adela nodded, and he took her hand gently in his continuing in his soft tone, “When I return later, I will show you about the town. You gather up enough rest for that, allow the servants to pamper you. While I am gone I will think about how well cared for you are.” Adela smiled at this, and he kissed her hand lightly before he said in nearly a whisper, “I must go.” Releasing her hand he paused only once more to touch her hair, before smiling gently and then left. As he stepped out into the hall his heart ached, if the situation had allowed it, he would remain with Adela as long as she liked, but he couldn’t. The guard looked at him and interrupted his thoughts, “Prince Ivan, my Lord wanted me to tell you after breakfast the teams were heading out this morning, he’ll be heading one, and if you like you can as well. He’s around here somewhere, easy to find. He asked me not to disturb you until it was near time, it isn’t yet.” Prince Ivan nodded, “Good, I will try to find him, but I need to see my men. If you see my Lord please tell him I’m about and preparing to accompany him.” The guard nodded and then informed, “Oh several of your men are up. They’ll be about here as well.” Prince Ivan nodded, “Thank you.” He headed off, wishing he’d woken earlier so he could have more time to think. He traveled with many men at a time, but for the town visits that morning he couldn’t be in all the towns at once. He did want at least one of his men to go with each team Cyan sent out. He chose the most refreshed men of those at the castle, the ones wandering around. He had them accompany him out to the stables to see about the horses. There he found Cyan had already been giving orders as the horses were being readied. He left the men there to ensure their horses would be ready as well, and to help equip them. Prince Ivan was brave, but not inept. He would never allow his men to travel without sufficient weapons and arms. The horses were no exception. He headed back inside and tried to think as he stared at the castle looming about him. He hated to leave Adela, yet he needed to see for himself what was happening around them. He had to go, and he had to defeat Gabon! Yet his heart lay with Adela up in her room, anxiously awaiting his return. There were times when he visited several towns that he wished he could divide himself to be in two places at once. Now he wished there was simply two of him, one to stay with Adela, and one to go defeat Gabon, and see to his important duties. The young prince stopped at a window and looked out, and suddenly parts of his dream resurfaced in his mind. Adela in the castle window such as the one he stared out in thought. He was interrupted by Cyan who approached asking, “Are you one to hiding in the windows of this castle too? I say I’ll have to be boarding them shut if it’s so.” Prince Ivan looked at him, hearing the question, but not understanding, “I beg your pardon?” Cyan shook his head, “Never mind, I heard you were about and wanting to go to the towns. I wanted to find out if you wanted to head out with me to several, or to several on your own?” Prince Ivan forgot his thoughts about Adela and the dream as he replied, “I’ve asked that one of my men accompany each team, therefore I have covered that. Meanwhile I intended to travel to towns, as you know I usually see to things. However it would be good to go along with you, we could discuss the next step along our journey.” Cyan noted that the prince had been far away, and still slightly distracted. He wondered if the gentle prince had been thinking as much about Adela, as he had Deirdre. He declined to ask, instead he nodded, “It’s fine by me, although we will have enough time to discuss things later. We may as well get in the extra time and use each other as sounding boards.” The young prince nodded, and Cyan continued, “I was just heading to the teams having an early breakfast, if you’d like to join me. Get something to eat.” The young prince nodded again, his thoughts still back on Cyan’s mention of sounding boards. He had been wondering if Cyan had felt it as hard to leave Deirdre behind as he did. He was still absorbed in thought he didn’t notice Cyan had motioned to leave, nor did he hear Cyan as he said, “There’s a good selection of moldy bread and vinegar tea if you like.” The prince continued to nod, and Cyan asked in amusement, “Of course if you’re a bottomless pit we do have plenty of hazel eyed women here who may replenish your appetite.” The young prince looked at him asking, “What was that about hazel eyed women?” Cyan replied with a question of his own, “Is that where you’ve been? I’ve been speaking gibberish and you’ve been nodding in agreement. Now that you’re with me, would you like to enlighten me?” Prince Ivan shook his head, “It’s nothing really, let’s go. Where was it you said?” He started to move off, and Cyan followed saying, “For something to eat before we go.” As they headed to the dining area, Cyan continued quietly, “Believe me, it isn’t nothing, and I know that. There’s only one hazel eyed woman I know that could take your mind away from your body as I’ve seen just now. You’re not the first I’ve seen do that either, and I’ve done it myself. The problem is, when we get outside of this town, you can’t leave your mind back here if we’re encountering trouble.” Prince Ivan was listening now he replied softly, “Oh, I know that, I’m mulling over the thought of leaving her alone here. I think it’s this dream I can’t remember.” Cyan couldn’t relate, “Dreams I can’t help you with friend, mine I can remember, and lately unrepeatable.” Prince Ivan smiled at this, and then asked, “Do you feel torn in your decision to go out and see to everything rather than stay here with Deirdre?” Cyan looked at him, “If we find the towns around here are compromised, then I would remain here. If not, I have no issues with leaving her behind, my trouble is seeing to it that she remains where she should be. I’m afraid when I return the entire castle will be upside down at her hands.” Prince Ivan smiled again, and then sighed, “I want to go and I want to stay with the same amount of desire. That’s what has me so unfocused, however when we head out, I’m sure I will be concentrating on searching for signs of these evil men.” Cyan looked at him and said quietly, “You and I are in the same boat, only your woman won’t have the guards looking for flowers while she slips out the back way.” Prince Ivan smiled wider as he asked, “She really would given half the chance, wouldn’t she?” Cyan raised an eye, “Aye, she would.” They headed into the dining area, and sat down to breakfast. It appeared the young prince had been distracted in thought a few times, but listened to the conversations at the tables around him. Cyan hadn’t known the gentle prince very long, but somehow he felt closer to him because they shared the same situation. As much as he liked his gentle nature, Cyan still had the mental note of his coldness with the prisoners etched in his mind. He believed the man was sincere about Adela’s well being, and felt for the man’s hard decision to remain to protect her. One thing he learned was that none of the resistance fighters would be joining them, they were resting in hopes to accompany them in the battle against Gabon. Cyan hoped they would remain to watch over Adela and Deirdre allowing the kings men to do their job of defeating Gabon, but the decision wasn’t his. They would take whatever man they could if necessary. He could at least count on Ben Webster, and he mentioned him to the young prince who took in the information while he polished off his breakfast. It was while they were dining when the man Prince Ivan had sent to the King, came to report his message, “My Lord, and Prince Ivan.” He attempted to give a bow to the young prince who waved a hand, “You know better than that, tell us the message.” The man nodded, and pulled a written scroll of paper and started to read, “My dear nephew, I understand the situation south and in Bristol remains safe, and your concern to help. I have gathered forces to see to the town’s further north, and sent out search teams for Gabon. It appears he is a mighty foe, and we are welcoming as many men to join us as possible. However you must see to it that the towns are not depleted in guards in case the enemy makes their presence known. As for you and Sheriff Cyan Barlow I call upon you to the front line where we need help assisting in several towns and search teams. I have sent word to gather all my troops whom cannot join us until they arrive here. Therefore we are expected to hold off the enemy until the support arrives. Bring as many available men, ensuring the towns and Bristol remain secured with enough men, and depart for Matlock immediately. Sincerely King Edmund.” The guard looked up from his reading at Cyan and the young prince adding what he knew, “Matlock is where the King is stationed as a home front base. He will assign you accordingly when you arrive to the towns needing the most liberation. Wakefield, Beverly, and Carlisle have the most resistance.” Cyan knew Deirdre was from Carlisle and asked, “How is Carlisle? Are there any status numbers you can give us?” The man looked at him, “From what I saw in Matlock, and heard many of the towns have varied numbers of resistance that the King has ordered men to stop and seize. As for casualties the numbers of slain are great, some have been captured, others have apparently turned sides.” Cyan nodded, and Prince Ivan grimaced, he did not like what he heard, and knew then that he had to go and defeat Gabon. As much as he cared for Adela, and wanted to be by her side if she needed him he couldn’t allow Gabon, and his men slay innocent people. Cyan asked, “Is there any more news?” The man shook his head as he rolled back up the paper scroll and handed it to the young prince. The man said quietly, “I have no more to report, other than you must make haste to help them or more towns will be run over. I understand you have to ensure the safety of Bristol and the surrounding areas, however it would be most wise to leave as soon as possible following that.” Cyan nodded, and Prince Ivan replied quietly, “Of course, we have finished our meal, we should see to the safety now.” He looked at Cyan who nodded, and looked at the others, “You heard the orders, let’s make haste.” The men stood, and headed for the horses. |
