Fighting For Freedom (Triple F)

Macy had done many things in her life, made decisions she hadn't wanted to. Life tended to force her hand though and she'd just gotten through burying her half brother...now this.

She stared at the business card with Raul's name on it and flipped it over again reading Curtis Robinson written on the back. It was still there unchanged like she wanted it to be. An assignment for the Specially Hired, the head man Raul expected her to return her step father to prison. If she didn't it would be a different soldier sent out, one not so sympathetic that might harm her step father. They were elite and trained, able to make kills under sanction if need be...and they wanted her to join the team.

Knowing what she had to do Macy packed up her bag and glanced at her coffee cup. It hadn't been finished and she felt a surge of adrenaline about to erupt. Looking in the reflection of the windows of the Tim Horton's she sat in, she saw the jerk still staring. It was time to release some frustration and she was ready to deliver. She set an alarm on her cell phone to go off in a minute.

Every morning at the Tim Horton's the jerk had been there staring. Then he started occupying whatever table she'd used last there. The business card with the assignment had been the final straw, something had to give...and Macy was ready to give. She picked up her coffee and loosened the lid before juggling it, her bag and knock off I-pod. Meanwhile she was counting down the minute in her head to get her timing right.

The jerk was near leering as she made her way over juggling everything as she attempted to untangle the strap from her player that wound through her bags strap. The seconds counting down Macy was on target as she got to the jerk who was about to speak, but her phone went off and she pretended to be startled as she purposely let the coffee fly into his lap.

"Oopsie." Macy tried not to grin as she reached for her phone and flipped it open, "Sorry." She moved off pretending to answer it, "Hammer, hi! You should see this fugly nerd in here with his new 'hot pants'." She laughed at her own remark as she continued outside not bothering to look back inside. The jerk likely had run for the washroom, but she was sure he'd gotten her message.

She got her stuff organized and she slipped her phone away. Now that she was earlier she had time to get ready for her first plan of action regarding her assignment.

She knew Specially Hired weren't Specially Stupid and would draw back in following her while they watched what she would do. She had no intentions of seeing Benny 'The Hammer' Marrow, but she needed to see one of his trusted men Tony 'The Toenail' Spano. Unlike the others nicknames, Tony did indeed get his nickname 'Toenail' from ripping off the toenail of a double crosser. Tony also liked the underground fighting and sometimes entered them. This was what Macy needed to see him about and he could take a secure message to Benny. All she had to do was get to Tony unseen.

The best way to lose anyone was via the subway and down there it was easier to lose people. Fortunately she needed to use the subway to get to Tony so she was headed there.

Downtown had a wonderful underground maze through various buildings and at crowded times it was easy to get lost. By the time she got to his place she was positive she'd lost the Specially Hired soldiers.

Macy had been to Tony's place before a few times when an underground fight was on. She met him there before going to be a spectator at the fights and once came back to shoot the breeze over fighters and the UFC. The conversation went on to other MMA fights before she realized how late it had gotten. Tony had been cool and they'd made a good friendship. She didn't think Benny's goon would mind her suddenly dropping in.

She was right; although she was sure she'd woken Tony he was more surprised to see her than anything else and ushered her in.

"Mace! Come on in; man I'm surprised to see you. Hey, I'm sorry about Geordie; if you need something let me know. Is that why you're here?"

Macy wouldn't ever let on about Specially Hired, but in this case there was no need, she replied quietly, "I do Tony and it isn't anything difficult. You can handle my favor with your eyes closed."

They took seats and Tony offered, "Do you want anything? Or are you pressed for time getting to work?" Macy knew Tony was aware of her work schedule and nodded, "I need to get back and I'm good thanks."

He relaxed as he mused, "I take it this is serious since you came to me instead of Hammer."

Macy would've grinned at his intelligence if her mood had been lighter instead she replied, "You're absolutely right Tony and I know you're all aware by now that my step father Curtis Robinson escaped after the service. He's on the lam with a massive police hunt and I need to help him. I know Hammer can get in touch with him and I'm prepared to get some money together and plan to get him out of the country. All you need to do is set me up for underground fights, as many as you can right away against anyone even if it's Nicky. Then tell Hammer my need to get in touch with Curtis."

Tony nearly paled as his face grew serious, "Holy fuck Macy you're asking for a lot on yourself. You know how tough those fighters are and you've never been in them. I'll do it if you're 100% sure; you know money can be made easier or loaned."

Macy replied evenly, "Tony, I'm as sure about this as I am Nicky has already tested his new knuckles on someone's head."

Tony nodded as he said, "It's done and I know the cops will be suspicious of you so we'll be careful. I just got one thing to ask you Mace."

Macy didn't mind, but could see he was reluctant in asking, "You're cool Tony go ahead."

"Don't take this as an insult Mace," Tony went on gingerly dancing around the question, "I know you're tough and know fighting, but I've seen more of these fights than you and have more experience to advise you with."

"Why Tony," Macy said when he paused, "I'd be honored to have you as my trainer and coach."

Surprised she knew he relaxed and reached across with a hand, "It's a deal and a pleasure Macy."

Macy shook his hand and set up a meeting with him for later before heading out. She had just enough time to get to work now and once away from Tony's place she didn't care if Specially Hired followed her.

Work came and went without trouble and Macy wasn't looking for Specially Hired soldiers as she went home. She was focused on training and getting plans going for getting Curtis out of the country. She was certain Benny could get him fake identification and the money she had from the account was a start on what he'd need to get away. Macy also knew Hammer had contacts in the U.S. All Curtis needed was a very changed description and a ride over the border.

There was a chance Curtis could have already been long gone, but Macy was positive he was laying low until the search died down. She had guessed that he might have had help planning his escape and scoped out the area. He might even have plans making good his escape.

Macy got into her little apartment and prepared to meditate first. There had been no time to think until then. She hadn't time to grieve her half brother and even less time to deal with killing the bad drug pusher that killed him. Her step father's escape and Specially Hired presenting her with capturing him as a mission had piled on top of it all. It made her doubt taking on the fights...had it been a hastily made decision?

It was quick easy money for her with less illegal woes than any other way she could think of. Regardless of what other decisions she made it would be worth it, but very dangerous.

Curtis had sprung his escape on her at the funeral and she'd helped without having time to think about it. She knew he had to of been desperate to want to escape before his sentence finished out. He had committed fraud, not spiked someone through the heart like she had. Curtis wasn't like her, or the others inside. He wasn't tough enough to handle it like Macy could...she couldn't bring him in.  He had helped her try to fit into his life and had raised her like a step father normally would. He was the only father figure she'd had since her real father hadn't been around long before her mother banished him. She'd never seen him again since he was later murdered and Curtis came along filling what void was left.

It was incredibly risky for her to play along the razor's edge with the elite team from Specially Hired, but her heart and soul swayed toward the side of her step father...she had no choice, but to help him.

The inner demons fighting within her hated the new offence she was preparing to commit, but Macy managed to keep them in control. Even if Raul had no problem with it; she'd still killed Steve Evans and she knew taking lives was wrong even though he'd attacked first. Even if aiding an escaped felon wasn't as bad she knew it was wrong too. She guessed her conscience was changing because her old 'screw the world' attitude didn't buffer the bitterness. She couldn't let herself get out of control and turn back to fighting the world. There was no justification in her actions so she was forced to deal with them.

Helping Curtis had to be the last thing and then she could join the elite and pay back for her actions. She could make peace with herself then and move forward. For now she had to cope and used all the previous adrenaline to hold it together because if she didn't she was sure she would destroy herself.

The meditation had helped her focus even if it hadn't resolved her conflicting demons. That she knew had to be dealt with on a deeper level and there was no time. She needed to warm up and practice. She sensed that Tony would get her a fight right off. One thing she knew was that new fighters were treated like the rookies in any sport. Fresh blood, the greedy underground fighters saw a chance to step up quickly.

At 5'4 and small sized, Macy was always overlooked and while she warmed up she thought of this. She thought of the many that had been underestimated, all the David versus Goliath fights. Royce Gracie had beaten bigger opponents and fighters like Tank Abbott had lost to smaller opponents. She feared none, but knew better than to pick a tough opponent unless she had to fight it was better to befriend them rather than cross them. Benny had Tony and Nicky as prime examples of that.

Still, at her size she held the advantage because she'd fought all her life and everyone had been bigger. The second someone saw her they gave up those first few precious seconds thinking the fight would be a breeze. That was where she capitalized and lay a beating on them.

The other thing she had going for her was the ability to predict things or sense them before they occurred or during the occurrence. When Steve Evans tried to slash at her with his knife she'd moved before it came. She wasn't sure if it had to do with her father coaching her from beyond the grave, but it had worked for her.

Weapons weren't allowed in the underground fighting unless specified before hand. She'd seen various fights and never the same styles against each other, but one she'd seen where hanbo were used by one opponent against another using the tonfa as his weapon. Both had agreed prior to the match and it was absolutely action packed.

Occasionally a fighter cheated and used a hidden weapon, but it made them less likely to get another fight. Macy wasn't afraid if someone suddenly pulled a weapon on her as most styles taught how to defend against weapons. Fighting on the street; Macy had adapted the 'anything and everything is a weapon; the mind being the strongest' attitude. Basically if you were smart enough you'd find them and use them against your opponent. If anyone scoffed at that they could talk to vegetable that had tried to drag Macy into his car. The first head smash into his open car door had done the damage, but Macy lay a beating on him. A gang was thought to be responsible and Macy walked away without a scratch...Jackie Chan had nothing on her.

Macy's phone rang and she stopped practicing to answer it.

"Mace," Tony said, "I got an offer for tonight; a butch that's heard of you says she'll give you your first and last underground fight. It's yours to confirm, but meet me earlier if it's a go."

"It's a go." Macy replied, "I'll be on my way, but is there any stipulations?"

"Not this one," Tony replied, "but she's had one with a metal rebar and has been known for cheap shots and tricks. She’s also taken on some guys."

"Probably because she was once one." Macy remarked, "Set it up and bring me up to speed when I get there."

Tony laughed as he replied, "Good one, I'm going to tell Hammer. He's coming if you're taking the fight so you'll see him. See you in a bit."

Arriving at Tony's parking spot in the garage, Macy was positive nobody had followed her, but didn't care. Tony would get her to the fight zone earlier and undetected so it would be next to impossible for anyone to know what she was doing. Even so they wouldn't get why she was fighting, but if anyone from Specially Hired asked she would use the excuse of funds for her assignment.

Tony pulled up in his car and Macy got in. He didn't waste time informing her of what he knew, "It's set and I only gave your agreement to take the fight. No adlib or any preamble. She doesn't know anything much about you because Hammer said she was asking."

"What's 'Butch's' name?" Macy asked before adding caustically, "Or is it Butch Cassidy and she's got a kid that dances in the sun?"

Tony laughed before replying, "It's Karen 'The Kook' Kraus. She was born here, but got put in a home because of bad parenting and started getting into trouble. She didn't really get into our world until a while ago when she got into a fight with someone encroaching on our turf. Nobody really likes her, but the fight zone likes the business she brings and won't eliminate her from competition unless she pulls something. From what I hear she knows it so she's careful. I also know she's lost two fights, had a draw in one. It ended in interference, but the rest she won. She doesn't back down from any challenge and can take a beating. You know the rules so you'll have to lay your beating on her to ensure she's out cold. I've seen her get up after a nine count and move before she's determined beaten."

"What's her stamina time like?" Macy asked, "What's the longest she lasted?"

"Several minutes," Tony answered, "five the longest. She makes them quick, but I bet with you, you could toy with her before moving in and make her go longer. As for styles there's no surprise that she favors Aikido, but she fights with the disciplined style of Tank Abbott and we know why she's 'The Kook'. I'm not going to ask if you know who he is; I've already decided to assume you know every fighter that's walked the face of earth. After our last big conversation I bet you've discovered at least 50 more that I might not even have heard of. What I need to ask you, is what your diet has been like recently, I know you like your coffee. We need to asses your necessities."

"I had a half a cup this morning," Macy informed without taking any offense to his inquiry and knowledge of fighters. She was in training now and went on, "The other half went into a jerk's lap. I gave him a new pair of hot pants."

Tony laughed at her newest quip, but was still focused as they went over a run down of her diet and physical recent past. Tony mused quietly, "You'll want to put her away fast then; not toy with her. No offense, but without total training and diet you can't afford to take your time."

"None taken Tony," Macy replied, "I intended on shooting in taking her down and taking her out. After I've had better training I'll start laying a beating in my fights."

Tony agreed with a nod as he negotiated traffic and watched for anything unusual, "Good Mace, that's what I figured would be the best way to go, but I know shit happens. 'Butch' won't want a ground fight so we'll work on that because once anyone gets her down she's done. I've never seen her do well on the ground, but some people work on that. I know you know what it's all about and have much more experience than her, you could pull her arm off there if you wanted. The next thing is gear, I know you got what you own in your bag, but I can get you supply if you need it. We can do an equipment check when we get there."

Macy had brought comfortable clothing to wear and a pair of Harbinger gloves she'd gotten a while back. Most of the Brazilian jiu-jitsu MMA fighters used it, the Gracie jiu-jitsu being an exception, but it all went down to personal preference.

"I'm having a footwear problem, but that's about it. I've got my gloves and don't use shin guards unless sparring. Muay Thai fighters go according to preference and I've never used them."

Tony agreed with interest as he glanced at the Yin and Yang gear bag she had brought with her, "I hope you got a pair of guards in there or nobody will take your warm up; not even Nicky and he wanted to get there earlier to see you and get sucker bets."

Sucker bets was what underground betters made when they were positive of their fighter and wanted suckers to bet against them for money. These suckers usually had no clue they were sure to lose.

"I brought my guards," Macy replied informing, "They're Proforce Combo shin and instep and well worn from various classes. I've never had anything with them on my feet though; barefoot only."

Tony turned off near the fight zone replying, "I can get you a pair of martial art shoes, Adidas you've seen those types in the octagon, but need to break them in. There's a load of gear in the trunk and Nicky is bringing some. Benny got word and will be there later; Moose is bringing him. Nobody else knows, but they'll soon find out."

Macy was itching to test them out and didn't need to wait much longer because Tony eased his car around the back exit of the fight zone. A short moment later they were parked and getting out; Macy slung her gear bag and closed the door before she moved for the trunk meeting Tony there.

Having popped the trunk from in the car Macy teased, "Look at that, you're trunk is so  excited about the fight it went up on its own."

Tony laughed as he reached inside for the bag of gear inside and hefted it out like it was filled with cotton, but Macy could see it was heavy. Knowing Tony he probably enjoyed carrying it around for exercise and didn't offer assistance.

With one hand he slung the bag and used the other to close the trunk and then arm his car. Macy joked, "Put that bag over your shoulder and make everyone think you got the body of your last opponent in it."

Tony laughed again as he led the way inside with Macy matching his pace and they both looked around as they got inside. Macy had been in this fight zone before and knew her way around inside and Tony continued to lead. He'd been to all the fight zones the city had and each fight was scheduled in a different one to ensure the local police couldn't shut down the illegal fighting and gambling taking place. Macy hadn't heard of any busts on the fights which made her sure this one wouldn't stop tonight. She simply had to trust Tony to watch for that while she was focused on her fight.

It appeared only the set up and security crews were there and knew Tony so they breezed through pausing at the ring which was the fight zones. Two top owners that were like a typical promoter had it set up at each site. Another fight had been scheduled prior to hers so things had been prepared.

"Which guys are fighting tonight?" Macy asked as she studied the ring knowing the design, but unfamiliar with being inside. "Anyone who might need my help?"

Tony laughed replying, "You know Sammy; he's got a guy named Terry that knows his way around a ring, but has never been in here. Sammy joked about borrowing Nicky's knuckles and using his gloves over them to hide them."

Macy knew Sammy and glanced around musing, "I know 'Shadow' he's probably here somewhere. I'll give him a good luck kick in the ass."

"Ha ha." A familiar voice called from above and they both looked up watching as Sammy grinned down at them, "No sick jokes Mace or I might puke down on you."

Tony laughed as he continued to look up and Macy remarked, "Look at that, he's plotting a big escape up there in case the fight gets too tough. What are you going to do? Turn yourself into a bat and fly off into the shadows?"

"I heard you were coming and hid up here." Sammy replied smoothly, "It's a good thing because I don't want your good luck kick, give it to Terry for me."

Macy eyed the cat walk Sammy stood on and Tony warned, "Watch it or she'll give you two." Sammy grinned as he quickly retorted coolly, "From this birds eye view your fight would look totally wicked Mace. How about a demo on Tony there for me."

"Did you say 'from your black eyes view'?" Macy asked, "Because after tonight you might have both closed shut."

Sammy feigned disappointment, "Aw that would leave me unable to wink at you."

"No, you would be winking continuously with both eyes shut." Macy pointed out, "Now are you coming down to spar with me or do I have to come up there to have a cake walk, beating your ass on that cat walk?"

Tony laughed along with Sammy who moved to come down and Macy turned her attention to her bag, "Get those shoes; I'll get my gloves and guards on and test the shoes now."

They got busy getting prepared and Sammy joined them as Macy was getting the shoes on. Before Sammy could palm strike the back of her head she used her nearest elbow to jab him in the ribs, "Watch it Shadow, or your new nickname will be 'Dust'.

Tony observed in surprised silence as Sammy flinched from the elbow and teased, "I'm injured, now you'll have to take my fight too."

Macy gave him a sideways glance asking, "Are you always this goofy before your fights? If you are you should get your opponent's to see you like this so they get freaked out and forfeit."

Sammy laughed as he leaned against the ring watching her adjust the laces on the shoes, "You should get yours to watch you tie your shoes."

He got another elbow, but shifted slightly as he saw it coming and caught it in his stomach. This time he laughed, "Quit beating up my lunch."

Macy had her attention on what she was doing, but she replied in jest, "I have to so it'll be digested properly before your fight. That's what you get for entering a hotdog eating competition on the same day as your fight."

Sammy chuckled as he said to Tony, "Never let her in on anything you did in the past or she'll burn you about it forever."

Tony laughed as he agreed, "Yeah, like Kevin dropping the twenty pound weights on his foot."

"Dumbbell." Macy said as she moved to the other shoe. They needed some breaking in, but felt okay so far. While she worked Sammy agreed laughing, "Yeah and Dan who passed out in the sauna."

"Hothead." Macy commented as she finished with the other shoe listening as they chuckled and then looked at Sammy, "Get in and warm up the mat for yourself Sammy, get used to looking up where you were because you'll be seeing a lot of that in a minute."

Sammy continued chuckling as he got into the ring. Macy was familiar with the regular square ring and the octagon; both with the canvas floor. Fight Zone pulled off a unique style, turning the octagon into a star shape and caged it making it resemble some kind of satanically designed worship zone. The center was where Sammy now stood entertaining everyone with a poltergeist act that looked like something from a horror movie and included the eating of a bat. When Macy stepped in he grinned as he informed, "I put the bat in for you."

Macy checked out the ring asking, "A real bat I can use on your head or the kind you turn into?"

Sammy went into a tour of the ring instead of answering, "Over here to the point in this corner I knocked out two of 'Blob's' teeth. You'll have noticed they get the blood out of the canvas quite nicely."

"Too bad you can't get your head out of your ass quite nicely." Macy remarked as she checked out the space in the ring. From one of the gated sides Tony laughed as he looked over the top. The fence was taller than her and close to Sammy's height, but Tony was tall.

Sammy quit goofing around and informed, "I've used the corners to wedge my opponent's in and beat on them, but bigger guys don't get pinned there as easy."

"I prefer to pin ears," Macy mused, "but I'll keep it in mind. By the way, which one was 'Blob'?"

Sammy looked at her replying, "A lard ass named Derek who thought his weight could gain him an easy victory. Man was he pissed he couldn't eat missing those teeth, but it didn't help him to lose any weight."

"What? You didn't make him get his jaw wired shut?" Macy asked curiously as she finished her inspection of the ring.

"I hit that mother in all of his chins Mace." Sammy mused, "But that guy must've strengthened his jaw from all those years of stuffing his mouth."

Macy grinned at Sammy as she stopped in the center of the ring and snickered, "Lightening my mood before we spar isn't going to save you from me laying you flat out, but that was funny."

Sammy used a hand to swat at her, "You got it wrong Mace; we both got fights to prepare for. I'll intentionally rile you if you don't make some tough shots."

Macy moved in a blur using her elbows to strike at him before unleashing a shin on him. Sammy took them in stride sparring back while Tony watched. The practice was more than worth it because Macy picked up on Sammy's skills and honed her own.

When they had enough of that, Tony suggested they work the ring so Macy could get familiarized with it. This proved to be valuable experience for her as she'd only had minimal knowledge from before. Grappling along the fence was almost like learning a new skill in a martial art. She was able to get leverage using the chain links and Tony observed from the floor nearest them and advised them from his vantage point.

Remembering several tricks from various UFC and MMA fights, Macy tried them catching Sammy with a few finishing with a patented Marco Ruas foot stomp. Sammy released his grip on her and she laughed, "These new shoes have officially been broken in."

Sammy shook his head griping, "Watch that trick shit Mace, Terry could be here hiding under the ring picking them all up."

"You're just sore because I got you." Macy retorted before she added, "One lesson to always remember is to respect the fighters that came before you. All the old great fighters had good tricks us new generation should adapt to today's fight."

Sammy formed his hands in his sign of respect gesture accompanying it with a bow. Macy returned it with her own gesture and then they shook hands. The sparing over it was time to get out of the ring and back into the locker room.

“I think you two will want to work on the ground work inside on the mats next. Then some warm up exercise and stretching before you get ready and have a rest.” Tony said as he led the way to the back and glanced at them, “Although people are arriving I don’t think anyone from your opponent’s crew got an eyeful of your ring work.”

“Terry will be wearing steal toe boots if he was watching.” Sammy joked and Macy looked at him suddenly prompting him to ask, “What Mace?”

“My opponents will need steel toe knee caps.” She replied as she thought for a moment, “In fact, steel armor would work.”

They laughed as they head into the back and Macy decided she wanted to get changed first before attempting any ground work. She’d worn loose fitting clothes that would be easy to grab and manipulate. With the selected gear she’d brought to wear it wouldn’t be so easy. It was form fitting and made from a fabric that allowed the body to get air. The gear made her appear even lighter than before, but she could care less.

Tony and Sammy were waiting for her and said nothing of her appearance. She’d brought her gear bag with her though in case she needed something from it. Having taken her guards off, Sammy eyed her bare shins asking carefully, “You didn’t just add some steel plates to your shins under your skin back there did you?”

“Don’t worry; I’m not using them to strike you anymore.” Macy said as she dropped her bag next to Tony’s. He looked at her with a grin, but didn’t speak as she returned to her training.

They were near done when Benny ‘The Hammer’ Marrow arrived with Moose and Nicky. They watched with excited eagerness as they finished talking quietly amongst each other. They didn’t speak to them until they went into stretching.

“You don’t need my knuckles.” Nicky told Sammy, “You’re gonna flatten Terry ‘The Turd’.”

Macy glanced at Nicky before looking at Sammy who grinned, “No it’s not his nickname, that’s just what we call him.” He looked at Nicky asking, “If I can’t borrow the brass knuckles, how about borrowing your fist?”

Nicky laughed and Hammer remarked, “You’ll want his head too then, for head butts.”

“Yeah.” Nicky agreed, “But put Macy’s brain in it so you can out think him.”

Macy made a face as she warned, “Save those remarks for after the fight, picturing that is upsetting my stomach.”

Sammy rubbed where she’d elbowed him earlier and before he could remark she asked, “How’d you like a matching set?” He didn’t say anything and they finished stretching.

Following that Benny wanted a moment to speak to Macy alone so they went back to her change room. Nicky and Moose waited outside for him because when Hammer was done he’d be heading to his seat at ringside.

“First off Macy, Tony brought me up to speed. If you agree, I thought it would be simpler if Tony collected your fees and give them to me. I can set it up in an account ready for Curtis.” Benny explained as soon as they sat down on the bench. She nodded in agreement as she listened to him go on, “I got a line on him and can get him identification, but we need to change his appearance a little first and get photos for a license and other identification. There’s a chance he’ll want to see you to make sure this is legit.”

Macy wasn’t sure how much her step father knew Benny or trusted anyone, but nodded in agreement, “That’s okay; I don’t want him thinking he’s headed for a trap. I just want him out of the country and it sounds perfect so far. So go on, tell me where he’s headed and how it’s set up.”

“I got an account set up in California under the name we can give him. The rest of the funds from the bank and Geordie’s funeral are in there. Your fight money and bets will go in there too. You should make one tonight by the way because I know you’re going to win.”

Macy nodded, but didn’t speak so she could hear the rest and Hammer went on, “I’ll do that for you when I go, but the rest is simple. Once Curtis gets an appearance change, and the identification is made, I got some people that go over the border often for recreation. None of them have prior records so he can go over with them. Once on that side a car will be there to pick him up and he’ll be driving down to California. If all goes according to plan, a car and place to stay can be set up for him down there. I have some family who can keep tabs on him for us, but he just has to keep cool.”

Macy agreed, “It’s good, he’ll just need to lighten his hair, and use a tanning bed. Once he’s in California that will happen naturally in the sun. He won’t be recognized and I’m quite sure he won’t be looked for down there. It’s a deal Benny; Tony can take the fight money and give it to you. Make me a bet, however much you want to spot me for. I’m sure you know you’ll get it back.”

Benny extended her his hand, “I will; it’s a deal.” She shook hands with him and then saw him to the door before returning to the bench. She didn’t have time to think about all the details for her step father’s freedom, she needed to focus on her match.

Macy was meditating quietly for the next while until Tony knocked on her door calling for her. She got up and met him at the door where he jerked a thumb over his shoulder, “I just signed you in and Sammy’s up for his fight in a few minutes. They want to see you and Sammy wants his good luck kick before he goes out. I thought you might want to watch his fight too.”

Macy nodded and followed Tony out to the waiting area behind the curtain. A lot of people were around now and Macy looked at the people milling about as they approached. She picked out the two owners of the fight zone as they were the only ones in suits.

Sammy made a beeline to them from her right side grinning as he joked, “I haven’t seen Terry yet, but someone said he had to change his shorts.”

“You need to change your jokes,” Macy replied before insulting, “and your hairstyle. It looks like some poor rat is missing its nest.”

Tony started laughing and Sammy grinned as he looked at him, “You gave her your pep talk too early Tony.”

She was about to reply, but she’d picked out Karen ‘The Kook’ Kraus. Changing her quip she replied, “Look Sammy, I think I see Terry over there.” She pointed in Karen’s direction and Tony laughed harder while Sammy looked and then laughed.

The men in suits moved to meet them and Tony did the introductions, “Macy, this is Carter Doyle and Freddie Stevens.” Turning to the men he finished the introduction, “This is your fighter Macy.”

Macy sized both of them up deciding that the long dark hared Carter Doyle was the big fighting buff, Freddie Stevens looked like the business end of the partnership. Carter was busy looking her over looking like he was going to ask where the rest of her was. Freddie was genuinely curious as he asked her, “You are going to fight?”

Macy nodded as she replied coolly, “That’s right, I sure hope you got Gene LeBell refereeing in there tonight because this could get ugly.”

Carter’s expression switched to amusement as he realized her looks were deceiving and he held up a hand to Freddie who looked at him about to ask something, “It’s okay Freddie, it’s signed and done. It’s a pleasure to meet you and we look forward to seeing you in action.”

“In that case take video or all you’ll see is one long blur.” Macy replied as she looked at Tony asking, “When do we get to see who I’m fighting?”

Tony looked across the area as Steven informed, “They’re right over there; we’re just ensuring each fighter is here and ready. We can do that now.”

They followed them over to the other side where Terry finally appeared, but Macy had her eye on Karen who was watching her now trying to get some kind of idea of Macy’s skills. She didn’t intend to give her any kind of idea of what she was like and remained silent even though she really wanted to go over to Terry and pretend she thought he was Karen. It would have cracked up Sammy and Tony, but she didn’t think Carter or Freddie would appreciate her making fun of the fighters.

Sammy was silent too as he waited, and Macy got a sense that he was eager to joke too, but was holding his tongue. Meanwhile Carter was going through the pre-battle preamble boring them all to tears.

It was at that time she sensed the presence of someone very dangerous and wanted to look around for the source, but it wasn’t the time. Maintaining her poker face she remained still until the brief introduction was over. Then Carter addressed Terry and Sammy telling them they would soon be called to go out.

Once the gathering was over and broken up, they remained grouped where they were, but Macy turned to look around at the others milling about the area. While Sammy told Tony all his withheld jokes quietly Macy listened as she pinpointed the presence. She was surprised to notice the person staring at her and studied him with interest.

He definitely was a fighter, but not dressed for it tonight. His long blonde hair was held back in a ponytail and he had the physique of a wrestler. While she studied him, she noticed she had the attention of Tony and Sammy since she made no remark about Sammy’s jokes.

“Who’s the Vega wannabe?” Macy asked quietly without taking her stare off her staring game opponent. Tony and Sammy looked and Tony replied, “That’s Les Blancher, he’s fought before, but I don’t know what his problem is.”

Sammy informed, “I do, he’s jealous of me. I bet he’s trying to make me mad by staring at you Macy. Go over there and tell him not to mess with me or you’ll kick his ass.”

Macy could have grinned, but her staring game required seriousness and the more she did it, the more she sensed Les Blancher didn’t like it.

“I heard he’s killed some guys in fights before so don’t joke around him Sammy.” Tony warned, “At the very least he’ll hurt you, I’ve never seen him lose.”

They fell quiet while Macy continued her staring game, but Les got distracted by someone who came over to shake his hand. She continued staring anyway and when he noticed she was it surprised him. He abruptly turned and moved away so she couldn’t stare anymore and Tony warned, “Careful Macy, you don’t want to screw with him.”

Macy looked at Tony replying, “He started it; I finish it. If he asks to take me on I’ll do it.”

Tony and Sammy exchanged looks, but it was time for Sammy to get going for his fight. Tony motioned to the closed circuit television that was showing the event live from back where they were, “We can watch the fight from here.”

She followed him over and they stopped to watch. Since she would be out after Sammy’s fight she couldn’t go far. She also didn’t think that Terry would last very long and prepared to be doing battle soon.

When the final bets were made the introduction came for Sammy and Terry. While Macy watched with Tony from the television in the back she also kept alert of the people milling about in the area. The other side of the area had the same set up for opponents so that they wouldn’t interfere with each other.

Sammy was called out first and he went out like he was being chased by bees. Prompting Tony to remark, “Man he’s ready to go.”

Macy noticed that Les Blancher reappeared, but watched from the main feed. She watched as Terry was announced and as he came out remarked, “I want you to piggy back ride me out to ringside Tony.”

Tony balked, “Are you serious? No way, you gotta be joking.” Macy glanced at him, “I shit you not Tony; I don’t want to extend any more energy than I have to before my fight.”

Tony was thinking it over while he watched, but they were distracted by Sammy taking the action right away. Terry was prepared, but the energy Sammy brought in the ring was clearly over powering Terry because he couldn’t hold him off. Macy was alert to the presence of Les Blancher watching too, but couldn’t keep from watching Sammy’s fight. It was almost as if he’d planned the entire thing because he had Terry wedged in several points of the star during the bout.

Macy gave Terry credit for avoiding getting on the ground with Sammy, but he was taking a beating on his feet too. She also could give him credit for being able to take the beating, but it was obvious Sammy would win. She cast a glance at Les who watched with interest, but no indication of pleasure or dislike. It made her wonder if he was always neutral. Whoever he was, she didn’t like him and wouldn’t trust him.

Terry was knocked out a few seconds later and Tony looked at Macy, “Give them a few seconds to clean up the mat and carry Turd out.”

Macy hadn’t moved aside to look at Les again; he was still staring at the live feed. Sammy suddenly appeared grinning as he stopped next to them barely out of breath. Macy gave his arm a pat, “Good show, now I’ll show you how it’s done.”

He laughed and looked between them, “That was fun I think he caught me like two or three times and the rest was all me.”

Tony nodded and looked at Macy who remarked, “Well Sammy if you weren’t all sweaty I’d ask you to give me my piggy back ride out. I’ll have to settle for Tony here, but I want to hear you cheering for me all the way from back here okay?”

Sammy looked at Tony who was surprised as he asked, “You weren’t kidding?” Macy nodded and they both shrugged in unison prompting her to remark, “You two should tag team.”

She was ready to go out and was looking for some kind of signal she’d be called next. Only Les was watching her and he looked interested in what would transpire next. If she wasn’t about to have a fight, she’d have sassed him already. Something was telling her to remain quiet and calm. The dangerous atmosphere he was creating was blocking her intuition and she was sure her father was there watching.

A feeling came over her, that she should be careful of showing too much of her skills out there in the next few minutes. Simply finish Karen and get the fight done as quickly as possible. She was focusing on this now, how to do it and deemed the best way to be by tap out.

Macy was called up next and she hopped up onto Tony’s back prompting Sammy to laugh and others to watch in surprise. Hooking her arms around his neck Macy mused, “I always hated the UFC train down the aisle; this is way more fun.”

Sammy gave Macy a pat on the arm, “Kick ass Mace.”

Tony moved off and as soon as they got into view in the aisle everyone was surprised at the sight of Macy riding piggy back to the ring. Benny, Nicky and Moose were laughing though and clapping as they got to ringside. Macy waited until he stopped at the gate before hopping off Tony’s back remarking, “Thanks for the ride, next time you have a fight I’ll return the favor and give the crowd and even bigger surprise.”

Tony laughed and then gave her a pat on the back, “Get in there and get used to it with the crowd around watching now. I’ll be over in your corner so listen for me.”

Macy climbed into the ring and did a quick circuit of the ring before looking at Benny with a grin before pointing to her knuckles and then at Nicky who laughed. She made a gesture of a moose for Moose before moving to her corner where she grasped the fence and said to Tony, “I think that’s going to be the longest part of my debut here. As soon as she comes out I’m going for her and drop her quick.”

Tony nodded and gave her a grin before turning his gaze to the aisle in expectation of Karen. She was announced and Karen took her time coming to the ring pausing to yell at various people along the way. Macy could see it was to psych her out and she was prepared to fight.

The dangerous presence back in the locker room area no longer blocked her intuition and she sensed her father around now. She got a sudden premonition of locking up Karen on the mat in a quick match.

Karen was busy trying to out psych her, but it didn’t bother Macy who calmly waited while she watched her finally climb in the ring. Fight Zone had one official who simply allowed participants into the ring and closed the gate. He only entered to stop the fight or make the count for a knock out. When he closed the gate it signified the match was underway and the second he had it closed Macy charged.

Karen was surprised by her speed, but anticipated Macy was going to shoot in and throw her down. It was a fake and Macy stopped at the last second turning and using a foot sweep to take her down.

She allowed Karen to get into her guard, but used her left arm to over hook Karen’s right arm pinning it while she used her right hand to control her left. Macy had her right knee up while Karen struggled to try and head butt her, but it only gave her the leverage she needed. Hooking her left leg over the back of Karen’s neck and using her right knee up the underside of Karen’s neck she held her tight in place while Karen struggled.

The left over hook she had on Karen’s right arm was held firmly now, but Karen tried to get her left arm free to wriggle out of the hold, but Macy held on shifting her right leg out and over Karen’s left shoulder to prevent her from moving it further.

If Macy could release Karen’s arms she could move them around Karen’s head and complete the choke she was attempting. She slid her left knee over her right ankle keeping the foot flexed to keep it locked there tight. The move seemed to wear Karen down because she struggled for air as well as to get free.

Macy released Karen’s arms and moved her hands around Karen’s head pulling it down toward her. For a moment, Karen moved her arms to try and get at Macy to get free or hit at her, but Macy held on squeezing with her knees while she continued pulling down on Karen’s head cutting off the blood supply to her head.

Karen was getting weak and her attempts feeble, but Macy continued to hold on using the triangle choke on her until she was completely out cold. The referee came in and stopped the fight and Macy heard Tony screaming from somewhere behind her, “Holy shit Macy, let her go, it’s over!”

Releasing the hold was quick and easy because Karen was out and the referee was checking Karen with eager concern. Macy got up from the mat while the referee searched Karen for a pulse exclaiming, "You better had not of killed her-."

"She's alive I just gave her a different rendition of the sleeper hold." Macy interrupted before heading over to the fence where Tony stood. Benny had joined him with Moose and Nicky all of them checking out Karen's prone form.

Macy climbed the fence rather than use the gate hopping down beside them quipping, "Just in case someone is pulling a fast one on the match rules, I'm the first one out and on the floor."

Fight Zone never had a cage match to her knowledge, but they got the joke and grinned. After congratulatory pats and exclamations she turned her back to Tony holding out her arms, "I'll carry you piggy back, back."

Sammy suddenly appeared and hoisted her up onto his shoulder before Tony could reply. Macy wound up leaving that way to a mixed reaction. Tony didn't say anything as he followed, but Sammy sneered at a spectator who complained it wasn't much of a match.

Macy wiped a gloved hand through Sammy's hair, "Easy Shadow I don't want to fight that ugly guy next, he's got nothing to lose. By the way some poor rats nest is all sweaty."

Tony laughed and Sammy grinned as he glanced up at her, "After seeing you just fight you're never going to lose. That was absolutely wild and so fast I bet anyone watching barely caught what you did."

Tony led the way into the back area where they had everyone's attention including Les Blancher who wore an expression of disdain and this time Macy could remark, "What's the matter Belcher? Did I just beat up your boyfriend Karen?"

Sammy laughed, but Tony gave Macy a pale faced glance. He looked like someone had suddenly stuck a knife in him. Les didn't change his disdained expression as he replied coldly, "It was a cheap victory; I'm not impressed."

"Actually it was an expensive one since we all bet on Mace." Sammy replied with a grin, "You'd be happier if you had bet on her too."

Les narrowed his eyes at him retorting breezily, "I'd be happier if you minded your own business."

"You'd also be happier if you didn't tie that girly ponytail of yours so tight." Macy said irritably; this guy was really pissing her off now, "It seems to be choking off the blood to your brain like how I just did with your boyfriend out there."

Tony came to his senses and jabbed Sammy's arm, "Forget it, let's go."

Sammy glanced at him replying, "What and waste a good chance to insult Belcher? No way Tony."

Les gave him a glare asking with challenge, "How would you like a fat lip?"

"Why? Are you giving away yours?" Macy inquired wickedly, "You can sell it to your boyfriend Karen cheap."

Sammy laughed, but Tony looked like someone had twisted the knife in him. Les Blancher looked every bit as deadly as his dangerous presence, but Macy could see he was a thinker before acting on his emotions.

Staring at Sammy he challenged, "Are you going to let your puppet up there speak for you? Or will you settle it with me? A future match perhaps?"

Sammy didn't hesitate, "Sure, anytime Belcher. I'll add another fat lip to the one you already got."

Tony had a look of death on him now, it was almost as if he was about to bleed out from the knife. She expected him to have a look of a corpse next as she said steely, "You'll have to give him time to find his way to the ring and figure out the gate Shadow. I suppose if his boyfriend Karen ever wakes up she can help him get dressed." Looking at Les she asked, "Should we bring shades in case you wear your neon pink tights?"

"You have a match," Les said carefully keeping from acting on his anger, "you will regret this."

He turned and left with Macy calling, "In case you can't find the exit it will be marked with a little red sign above the door."

Tony put a hand to his forehead rubbing it as he asked wearily, "What did you two just do? Are you both insane?"

Macy looked down at Sammy as he looked up at her on his shoulder with a grin. Before either of them could speak Carter Doyle and Freddie Stevens approached and they waited. Macy was enjoying her perch from Sammy's shoulder since the height was an advantage she'd rarely had.

"That was the quickest match in Fight Zone history Macy." Carter said with a tone of serious respect as he went on, "We have offers of future contenders from previous fighters who believe this match was a fluke."

Macy glanced at Tony replying, "Sign me up; I don't care who they are. Tony and Sammy can vouch for my credibility as well as Benny."

Carter nodded and glanced at Freddie who agreed, "Mr. Marrow assured us of this already all that's left is signing you. We are going in rank of your challengers and the next fight scheduled is the night after tomorrow. She is one of Karen's opponent's that she had a draw with and maintains she had her beat..." Looking at Carter he asked, "What's her name?"

"Toula Kennedy, she wanted a rematch, but Karen declined for your challenge." Carter said before continuing, "We grant a rematch if it's a draw or close finish, but when an opponent is heavily beaten they need to prove they've worked on their skills before allowing them back in for the fight. I should also stipulate that although your finish was clean we don't like dangerous ends. Like bringing in hidden weapons it lowers your credibility and we need to protect Fight Zone from legal action as well as the law. Our referee was upset because he thought you'd asphyxiated Karen, but it's clear you simply cut off the blood flow and not the oxygen."

"I can demonstrate the difference for him or anyone else if you like." Macy offered coolly before adding, "Unless you'd like to."

Sammy chuckled and Carter grinned, "No, I think we can do that for you. So we'll get Tony to sign for you and you're set. We'll see you the night after tomorrow."

"What about my challenge?" Sammy asked and added when he got blank stares, "Belcher just challenged me and I accepted."

Carter and Freddie exchanged grim glances before Carter said without commitment, "We'll have to check into it. Les Blancher isn't one of our favorably approved contenders because he has gone beyond beating his opponent's with extreme beating. I strongly advise you to try not to push for the match in our Fight Zone, but won't stand in the way if you have a serious challenge."

"He could make it in an empty lot with Belcher if it isn't with you and make all the profits. Plus Ontario may not sanction fights like the UFC, but Quebec does and it’s not a far trek to fight." Macy pointed out, "We've seen many unsanctioned fights here before and the law risk is the same. It's just a matter of if you have the brass to back the fight or not."

Tony warned quietly, "Macy, careful or you'll lose your fight."

"I'd do the same thing with Toula and make the profits Tony." Macy said as she glanced at him adding, "I am not worried about legal ramifications from it. Shit, I half expect some of the cops turning their eye to the underground to place bets on me."

Looking at Carter she informed quickly, "They are aware of the Fight Zone, but don't care because nobody is dealing drugs or weapons and killing people in cold blood."

The thought of that last statement made her wish she didn't say it. Somehow she got a sense that Les Blancher did just that...take on opponent's he didn't like to maim them.

"Like I said," Carter replied quietly, "we'll have to check into it." He looked at Freddie and they turned to leave.

Sammy continued towards the locker rooms and deposited Macy at the door saying, "I've got to check out Belcher, but I'm not backing down." He looked at Tony who appeared as though he intended to talk him out of it.

Macy ignored him and replied to Sammy, "I'm in your corner Shadow, but I have another match to prepare for." She turned and head into the locker room. There was no time for celebrations; Macy needed to remain focused. She had Raul to contact regarding her assignment and stall for more time there. She guessed Benny would keep on top of Curtis for her. There was her work and training to deal with too.

She had Tony drop her near a bus on her route and he caught up to one for her. They mostly discussed plans for future training and meetings. It was late when Macy got into her apartment, but she pulled out the business card with Raul's name on it. Dialing the number she listened to the ring as she flipped the card over looking at the hand written name 'Curtis Robinson'.

"Hello?" The familiar voice of Raul answered, she was surprised he was there, but didn't comment about it.

"It's Macy," she replied in a neutral tone, "I've considered your offer and assignment. I know it's late, but I am eager to let you know where I stand."

"That's no problem Macy," Raul replied sounding eager to hear what she decided, "I'd prefer to meet, but if you can't that's fine."

Macy could lie easily without anyone detecting it in person from her genuine sarcastic behavior fooling people constantly, but she was in training and needed her rest.

"Normally I would agree, but I've decided to look into the assignment and see if it's doable. If so, I'll take it. I wanted to tell you that and inform you I'm doing it because I don't like the idea of someone else doing it. You also have to guarantee me that nobody will interfere because it'll only make my job more difficult."

"That's guaranteed," Raul replied, "and acceptable. Just note that while my team, of Specially Hired are standing down, they will be around in general checking with sources and ensuring that things are fine."

"I don't like shadows." Macy replied trying not to think of Sammy as she continued, "So make sure they stay out of the way."

"It's just precaution Macy; we need to be out there. Not just for support, but other viable reasons. Most of the time we work without safety nets and the last thing I want; is for you to get blindsided by someone, lawful and unlawful people."

Macy didn't want to protest, but replied, "Don't let them compromise my position in the underworld Raul, or else you won't have a member to join your team. You'll have a hit on me that would happen before anyone there knew."

Raul replied firmly, "I can assure you that won't happen. Everyone knows and for the record the two commandos you met respect your status and have no desire to disrupt it. They both feel it will be beneficial to us."

Macy thought about them and Fight Zone suddenly. Vic knew martial arts and Chris made Tony look tiny. Both would be ideal contenders while they checked out Les Blancher, but she needed to consider this more.

"Keep Vic and Hulk on standby for me." Macy replied without commitment, "There might be something I can have them do, but I need to look into things. It might take some time, but I'll get in contact with you when I find out more."

"You mean Chris, but that's fine. Call me any time, bye." Raul answered.

"I mean Hulk and I will. Bye." Macy said and they hung up.

Macy was delighted to see that the jerk wasn't in Tim's that morning and was able to drink her bottled juice in peace. It sucked she couldn't enjoy a coffee for the first time in peace, but it was a short lived peace because a new nuisance appeared. An overly friendly maintenance man fluttered around straightening the area Macy sat in. Distractions were getting in the way constantly and she valued her morning peace, it kept her at peace. The chairs he dragged around to proper tables were loudly filtering in through her earphones and she considered meeting with Tony tomorrow morning. She couldn't focus on anything like this, but at least the training would be beneficial.

After work she met Tony in a different location where she learned he'd wanted to meet with her tomorrow morning for training and had to since Benny was secretly setting up a meeting with her. She sensed that he'd gotten Curtis to trust his help and they would meet.

In case she needed Chris and Vic later with Blancher she alluded that she had two buddies that might want to get into the Fight Zone for some excitement and money. If things got too deep later, she could get them in for help.

Before dropping Macy off in front of another bus Tony informed her he was getting more information on Toula for her. Macy got into her apartment feeling exhausted, but desperately needed to meditate and reflect.

She held a lot of hate for the world she was in, anger at how society had labeled her and destructive demons fighting within her. She had contemplated carrying out several illegal acts to gain more money and leave with Curtis. He would benefit from her living life on the lam with him and he was the only family she had. It would mean remaining on the evil destructive path she'd been headed in, but her heart and soul hated her for it. Her paternal father was gone, but she felt that he was there pointing out these things to her. Telling her that if she did things for good purposes she wouldn't hate herself. There had been times Macy had empathy for people and helped for the good it did and it balanced her out. Abetting Curtis was illegal and her assignment was to get him back to prison; if she continued helping him it might tip the scales in favor of the evil and destroy her. She was destroying herself anyway fighting illegally and siding with Benny, but it was all she really knew of life. It would take a lot of helping little old men and women across the street to pay back her debt to society and she hated society anyway.

Macy felt like she was tipping from side to side on a tightrope. She studied the yin yang logo on her gear bag thinking harder. Its symbolic meaning held her as she thought about how she respected the martial arts around the world. It was something she never held hate for; aside from people like Les Blancher using skills to maim people the world of fighting had been an educational journey in her life. If only she could use that world to free herself from the spot she was in. How could she turn back now after killing her half brother's killer? After helping her step father escape going back to prison? How could she bring in Curtis after all the support he'd given her growing up? The entire thing was ultimately destroying her mind if she didn't keep hold of it. Wherever the yin and yang was she hoped it remained balanced because she wasn't so sure how much more she could handle.

Macy met Tony at a different location feeling slightly better because she had to focus on training and the fight tonight. Good or bad demons, she had to focus and this held her together which was good because when Tony stopped at the underworld private gym he did so in an overly cautious manner.

"What? Is Belcher and his boyfriend Karen out here too?" Macy asked looking around, but saw the very serious expression on Tony's face prompting her to realize that it wasn't just Hammer she was meeting this morning before training.

Tony didn't speak as he led the way in, he could see Macy had figured out who was with Benny and saw them when they stepped inside.

Curtis Robinson waited with anticipation next to Benny who motioned quietly with a hand. Macy could see that her step father had changed since their last meeting. Before his hair had been longer, but now it was shorter and she was sure he'd used hair dye to the color of the white that had once peppered his hair. It reminded her of Robert Blake, but Curtis was also growing in facial hair the same color. He'd also put on weight and she wondered if he'd planned that part.

They went silently into the office to speak privately; they only had so much time before he would have to go. Members would arrive here soon, but Macy knew it was safe as nobody was aware Benny owned the gym so his people could use it at free will.

"You look much different," Macy mused quietly, "I guess you switched your diet."

Curtis gave his appearance the once over and patted his belly, "Yes, and I'm working on a gut. I don't want to waste time, but Benny has everything set for me and I'm going as planned. This is going to be our last meeting Macy and I want to make it count. After this we'll barely get chance to send word through Benny, but he's keeping an eye on both of us."

Macy hadn't been prepared for any of this, but before it could hit her like a ton bricks Curtis went on.

"I want to tell you first that I don't want to see you fighting for money for me. I told Benny I'd get the money working in California and he said he wasn't about to get his chops busted by you and tell you. He said we could work it out between us and he'd respect our decision, but Macy before you answer there's things I need to tell you. Something you need to hear first and my own opinion."

Macy nodded agreeing, "I'll hear you, but there are things you need to hear from me too."

Curtis nodded and then said quietly, "I always believed you were better than you got credit for. I never liked the way everyone pointed out all your bad traits. Not when I could see you mean well, your mother's final days was proof of that. She was always afraid for you and bitter because you're like your real father. I never saw you aside from who you are and maybe you are like others, but it doesn't mean you'll end up that way. You have your own chance to guide your life in the good way I know you can. Your knowledge of fighting is the key, but not the answer to my financial woes. Your father was a fighter and he died fighting, but you don't have to. You could teach others growing up like you did how to make it. My escape is the last thing on your slate, wipe it off and use all that toughness to put your life on a good track."

"This is where I should say 'talk about calling the kettle black', but I think you'll tell me you're planning to keep straight in California." As an afterthought Macy added, "But you have no choice or you'll wind up back here in prison. I do respect what you're saying though; I just can't see how to get there. From my vantage point it seems impossible for me."

"Think of your father Macy, do it for him. Being a father I know it would make him happy for God's sake Macy look where Geordie is, you're the last of any hope for the children I tried to father to make something better of your life. You'd be making me proud as well as your own biological parents who are watching from wherever they are. Think of them and then of who you are. You'll find the way and it won't be so impossible."

It sounded so simple, but it didn't seem like it. She was listening to him though and Curtis saw it and continued, "Macy there are guys inside who are doing life who want the chance to make things right out here, most of them regret getting in there in the first place and some only know the underground world and trouble is all they know. They are lost at how to turn things around for themselves and remind me of you. I now understand where you are, but I know you for your true heart and soul. All the fight you put against everyone, use it against your bad side. Use the strength against it and destroy it so that you can start helping others."

"Instead of destroying people like Steve Evans?" Macy asked as she inquired, "How can I make up for that, it's just as strong a proof of the bad that I deliver Curtis. I respect what you tell me, but helping you may not be the last thing. I am capable of committing many more crimes."

"Steve sold your half brother the bad hits that killed him. He was destroying people with that shit he sold Macy. You didn't kill him because you wanted to; you did it because you had to."

Nobody had been there besides her and she asked curiously, "How do you know?"

"Because I know you Macy," Curtis smiled gently, "you wouldn't have done it unless forced. I gave you the information about Steve so you could stop him. I had faith in you that you would do that. When I learned he had been permanently stopped I knew it had to be unintentional. I'm sure he was low enough to come at you and it was in defense."

It was a surprise to hear this, but she informed softly, "I could've lay a beating on his ass Curtis, but it was an eye for an eye. I spiked him intentionally through the heart in cold blood. Can you still have faith in me?"

Curtis moved and took her hand gently in his, "I always will have faith in you Macy; I grew in the family with you bringing faith to you for all that didn't have it. When everyone and society labeled you as trouble I held onto their faith knowing one day you'd be able to find it for yourself and that time has come. Your mother once told me that if you ever got yourself straightened out you would make a wonderful person of yourself. You should know that your real father wasn't allowed around because he had lost his way too. He was a good person underneath, just like you."

"What other secrets did she tell you?" Macy asked with interest, "What's this about him being a fighter and died fighting? He was murdered; do you know more than I do about that?"

"He fought for money because he liked laying a beating on people just like you." Curtis explained quietly, "Your mother didn't like the violence and people were mixing up drugs with it. She was terrified you were headed down the same road. That's how the apple and bad seed relevance came about. I know the apple doesn't fall far from the tree, but I never believed you'd be exactly like anyone because I saw who you were. Your father and your mother are a part of you, but you made yourself and you can reconstruct yourself to something better. I only know that your mother didn't believe your father meant well and I believe he did. She told me he came a few times to see you, but she turned him away. She suspected he was around though. She thought he was leaving intentional signs of his presence around for you to find. I don't know much more than that, but I can tell you your mother suspected he was married before her and that she thought he married after her too. I didn't think it was my place to check, but you could look for records of it if you wanted. Right now I want you to at least try to promise me you'll try to work at helping yourself and others."

Macy was taking an overload on information and emotions and Curtis said, "I understand you have to take tonight's fight, but afterwards quit and make yourself feel better mentoring others in the underworld and help do some good."

"I can't do that Curtis, there's a different destiny calling me." Macy replied quietly, "What I need to tell you is that a group of elite soldiers have approached me about working for them. My first assignment is to bring you in, but obviously you know I can't do that. I intend to stall them until you're gone and then tell them the assignment is impossible. Meanwhile I have to stay in the underground Fight Zone because I think a friend of mine might need me there. There's a killer fighter that I might turn in to the elite soldiers in exchange for you. So I am walking a razor's edge."

Curtis digested this quietly, but asked, "How did they come to approach you?"

"Steve Evans was their previous assignment." Macy explained as she added, "I don't know about joining them, but I do know they are legit and know I'm responsible for Steve Evans and have no problems with it. I don't like that they could compromise my status of the underground world, they'd have to come to some agreements first."

Curtis nodded and said quietly, "So you might consider working for them using your underground skills for the good. Only you'd be in danger if anyone found out; somehow this sounds like it's right up your alley. You can still free yourself through them and regain the faith. You know I'm leaving you with all the faith I held over the years. If anyone is tougher or capable of doing it, it's you Macy."

Curtis was earnest and honest in his reply and Macy felt the scale tipping again towards turning things around for the good. Curtis watched her reaction trying to read her and when he couldn't he offered, "Think of me in California keeping straight and honest and trying to do the same Macy. I know it sounds like a lame dieting plan with a buddy, but this is for keeps. It's live or die, not get fat or thin. I'm in it for the long haul and maybe it might be easier for me to stay on the right path, but I'll be thinking about you."

"I can only promise to try." Macy replied honestly, "but you know as well as I how society is and how tough the road can be. Maybe I can use my toughness to fight it back, but sometimes things get out of control. It could happen to you out there on the lam; running from a cop you could wind up in trouble. I'll be thinking of you too though and remember what you said."

Curtis took her in a hug that she welcomed as what she considered to be the last. After he was gone there was no more family left for her aside from those she knew in the underworld. When he released her he gave her a light smile as he struggled to hold back tears, "Intentional at the moment you did what you felt to Steve Evans, but looking back on it now I know you think differently Macy. I never understood those moments until I was inside and learned from guys in there, but I always held faith that you have a good heart and soul. That faith is yours now; you have it in you too. Build on it and think of everyone and where we all are. If ever you feel yourself slipping remember what I said and that I still believe in you."

"If you start slipping," Macy said fighting back her own tears, "just remember all my old tricks and which ones worked. You might need one of them."

He grinned as he gave her arm a squeeze agreeing, "I will and I'll remember what a headache it gave everyone. Thank you for helping me and keep me updated through Benny."

Macy nodded replying, "I will and you take care of yourself because I won't be there to help anymore just like you won't be there for me."

After a final parting hug, Curtis gave her one last glance before leaving. She was left alone to reflect on the moment and was certain Tony would be preparing her for her fight with Toula tonight.

Benny had Curtis to take care of and she didn't expect to see either of them while training that morning. If anything she would hear from Benny when she was at the Fight Zone tonight. It was obvious Curtis would soon be leaving for California since his appearance had changed.

Tony gave her a respectable amount of time before appearing and easing into the training suggesting they focused on stretching and exercise before getting into the rest. Macy appreciated it and was trying to focus clearly. She decided at work she could consider the conversation with Curtis, but now she had to concentrate.

Following the training she had Tony drop her off where she had time to walk and started to think about everything. With all the information to process she knew it had to be dealt with one by one. She no longer had Curtis to worry about since Benny was taking care of getting him out of the country. It was a matter of Specially Hired and how to get on track. Curtis had opened up a door within her allowing plenty to get in. Her father had been a fighter and much like her. So he too struggled to stay away from trouble, but had he grown up living it? Had he gone as far as her eliminating a Steve Evans? Curtis had indeed made a point in the fact she did look back on her actions against Steve Evans differently now. Martial arts were meant as a defense and she respected this, but she intentionally set out to use her skills against the drug pusher. Looking back it had been in defense, but definitely not justifiable. Accepted or not by Specially Hired the good heart and soul that Curtis knew existed disliked her actions. The fact he knew it was there gave it more existence than before; his faith meant the world to her now. Instead of her screw society attitude she could now add she was better than they labeled her and she could prove it. Les Blancher would be handed over to Specially Hired and she could start fighting for herself and she knew where to start and how. Her respect of the martial arts would be the key, a refreshing training of mind, body and soul. Although Macy favored Muay Thai kick boxing in her skills she could adapt more styles to her repertoire and fortunately the city filmed a television series about Kung Fu. She had been greatly exposed to the world and learned from the show giving her greater interest in the art and intended to look into it. Shaolin Kung Fu had many forms that Macy knew of, but under the tutelage of a Shaolin priest she could meditate with guidance and without negative influence.

"She's got another fight lined up for tonight Raul," Dennis informed him warning, "so you can't trust her. She isn't looking into getting her step father back in prison because she's got to be training."

Raul sensed the former spy's bias, but didn't comment as he asked, "This is accurate information?"

"I'm backing what I've learned and it took digging to get it. Karen Kraus was knocked out in seconds and absolutely embarrassed to get beat so fast. It wasn't out that Macy was fighting and kept quiet which I'm trying to find out why since you'd want more bets. I think Benny 'The Hammer' is behind it because I heard his goon Tony was training Macy. It is all under wraps Raul; nothing about finding Curtis and bringing him in."

Raul stood and replied, "Watch how you dig Dennis, don't compromise Macy's status in the underground because with her comes that world we need."

Continuing out of his office he head to the gym passing the computer room pausing to call in to Owen who sat in front of a computer, "I need all your cyber information on underground fighting in the city pronto Owen."

The computer wizard looked up, but Raul was already gone heading for the gym where he knew Chris was.

The clanging gave him away and Raul knew that another specialist had to be in with Chris since he spotted anyone in the gym. He was shocked to see that it was Jack Flint the deadliest of all operatives working the weights under Chris's watchful eye.

Jack was the tallest member of the team and had the most striking red hair that made him resemble the Devil especially with his matching goatee. Usually he was out blowing up something or taking out the evil from the city like most people took out coffee.

Having been heard arriving, Chris helped set the weights down on the stand prompting Raul to remark, "It always amazes me to see you do that without ripping your shirt Chris."

He almost wanted to add a Hulk reference, but didn't dare to like how Macy did dare even though Chris was the most laid back member of the team. Chris was definitely the most muscular of the team and looked like he belonged on the cover of a muscle magazine with his size. Blonde and blue eyed; Raul often wondered why his elite soldier didn't moonlight as a model.

Jack sat up asking curiously, "More amazed than seeing me here unexpectedly?"

Stopping at them Raul replied, "Everything about you amazes me Jack; every time I think that's it you come up with something new. I thought my office was always your first stop, but now that I know it isn't I'm considering moving it to the front entrance so you'll have to see me first."

"That's a bad idea boss." Chris quipped as he pointed out, "One look at you standing there and everyone intending on coming in will turn around and go back out."

"I'll hold up your paychecks." Raul replied smoothly, but Jack glanced up at Chris, "I'll come in and get the paychecks while the rest of you waited outside."

Raul narrowed his eyes at him and Chris cut in asking, "What brings you by Raul? I know it's not for exercise and I doubt it's to hear us tease you."

Raul addressed both of them, "It's Macy, Dennis just reported that she took an under ground fight and knocked out her opponent. She has another lined up for tonight."

"Against Sean?" Chris asked with a big grin prompting a glance from Jack who remained quiet. Raul had to grin; Sean was the least liked operative and could care less about it.

"Macy asked that I keep you and Vic on standby Chris." Raul went on seriously, "I think something is up in the underground fighting world. One of Benny's goons, Tony is training her. Although Dennis made a point about her not looking for Curtis I got a feeling that this fighting is for a reason."

Jack glanced at Chris again before he asked, "So you suspect she may want Chris or Vic to enter a fight? Why? You don't need to fight to pick up a crook."

Raul looked at him replying, "I know that Jack, but I think to get them in for investigating they'd need to prove ranks. Obviously to get in the door it would be the lowest rank in competition, but definitely get them in to get a picture of what's going on. This is why I'm here; I'd like to find out what's going on before anyone goes in there."

"I'll check it out." Jack volunteered causing both Raul and Chris to look at him. Jack added with a grin, "You know I can handle a fight, don't look at me like that."

Raul replied carefully, "It would be obvious Jack. I'm also positive Macy will sniff you out and she can't be compromised. I'm already worried about Dennis."

"I'm always worried about him," Jack mused quietly, "but I get your point. My offer is still open though."

Raul wasn't positive if Jack would leave it, or go ahead secretly as he had a habit of doing secret missions. Rather than outright ask, Raul simply created buffer zones in case things went FUBAR. He looked at Chris informing, "I need you to make contact with Macy right away and make like you heard about the fighting through contacts and came to ask her about it. You'll have to say I don't know about your contact because I told her all operatives are on stand down."

Chris raised his eyebrows in surprise, "She'll kick my ass. Can't I blame it on Sean or Dennis?"

Jack glanced at him before asking Raul, "Why don't you let me make contact with her? I freelance all the time and can easily say I didn't get the stand down order. Besides it's for the Robinson mission and this is underground fighting. Two separate assignments."

"It isn't an assignment yet Jack," Raul pointed out, "and I get a sense that Macy's cool about Chris." Looking at Chris he added, "She keeps calling you Hulk."

Chris grinned suddenly remembering their first meeting, "Yeah I told her she had me confused with my brother The Incredible Dork when she asked if I used to be green."

Jack gave him an amused glance and Chris looked at him warning, "Watch your first impression you give her or you'll get stuck with the moniker of Ronald McDonald's big brother."

"I'd need a perm," Jack pointed out before looking at Raul again asking, "What if I go with Chris? I'm itching to find out what evil lurks in the fighting world."

Raul instructed, "We've got enough snooping with Dennis alone and I really don't like Chris going in, but until we learn more then that's how I want to play it. Meanwhile I think Vic could pass as his trainer if we need more people and that's it. You'll have to find somewhere else to bash and crash Raven because it's not going to be on this mission."

Jack shrugged and Chris looked at him, "It looks like you'll have Raul as your spotter now. I need to go."

Jack held up a hand, "Wait a minute, what about bets?" Looking between them he added, "That could be where we're needed and I could get in that way."

"Are you intentionally trying to get a bad first impression with Macy?" Chris asked curiously, "You know what she's capable of."

"I do know," Jack replied glancing between them continuing, "and that's my reason for pushing the issue. She spiked a bad pusher through the heart. Now she's fighting and knocking out people. I'd like the opportunity to check this out."

"One more time Raven, stand down until I tell you. I gave her the assignment to find and bring in her step father without our intervention and until I know positively the fighting isn't connected then I only want Chris in since she knows him and is cool with him."

Jack forfeited with a nod, "Okay, but I'm adding another fifty to the bar so you better get changed for a work out."

Chris gave Raul a grin watching as Raul sighed as he headed for his locker, he was sure he would pay for sitting out Jack Flint.

When Macy got home she found a message from Mila waiting and made time to meet her at the restaurant bowling alley. The owner, Jason Conner greeted her with a grin, "Hey Mace, Mila's at your table."

"Thanks Jason." Macy waved as she continued in and read Mila's expression noticing it appeared grim. If this is bad news about Curtis I'll snap.

Sitting across from Mila, Macy asked, "What's up?"

Mila informed quietly, "The word is out about you in Fight Zone. ‘Kook’ was too embarrassed to announce it so everyone thinks it leaked via inquiry because a lot of people are asking. Hammer is on top of things, but wanted you to keep vigilant."

"He'll update me tonight," Macy nodded relieved it wasn't terrible news, "but I'll be careful though."

"I have to pick up Trevor, but everyone is rooting for you in the fight tonight. You don't have to tell me why you're fighting just be careful."

Macy knew Trevor was in school and the whole story about him. Mila had Trevor shortly before she turned 18 and Macy knew the true paternity of her son. The 4 year old boy was a nice kid and Macy sometimes watched Trevor for Mila.

"I can't get into it, but don't worry. I'm not taking any fights I can't handle. Just keep your ears open for me and keep in touch."

Mila stood and gave Macy a pat on the arm, "I will, good luck tonight, not that you'll need it."

A moment after Mila left, Macy got up to speak to Jason who gave her a light smile, "After what I've been hearing I didn't expect to see you. Is it really true you're in Fight Zone tonight?"

"You heard right, but what else have you heard?" Macy asked hoping to find out who was behind the questions.

"Just what everyone is saying around here. That you fought 'Kook' and are fighting tonight. If I hear anything more I'll let you know though. I guess you'll be leaving soon to get ready."

Macy was about to go and nodded, but spotted Chris sauntering in. She hadn't expected to see anyone from Specially Hired, but suddenly wondered if they had been behind the sudden leak and questions about her fighting. Chris appeared so laid back she half expected him to bowl a frame rather than talk to her. Jason thought otherwise and grinned as he approached.

“Have you got a date set for your bowling party?” Jason asked curiously. Macy could see that Chris hadn’t forgotten his cover story and shook his head replying, “No not yet, we’re trying to find a time everyone can get together. I figure you’d be mostly booked on the weekends and wondered what the weeknights were like?”

“We aren’t really booked too much on a weeknight. Monday is really slow so if you’re looking for a good day of the week, that would be it.”

Chris nodded and gave Macy a grin; he was about to work a way he could speak to her alone, but she was busy looking at the front entrance indicating someone hand walked in. Whoever it was it made her expression darken considerably.

“Who’s the pin head Jason?” Macy asked wondering if he knew the newcomer. Jason glanced and shrugged replying, “Some guy who’s been around here lately; I don’t know his name.”

Chris turned to look and nearly lost his cool expression recognizing Dennis. He nearly wanted intercept him and drag him outside, but remained calm as he mused, “He looks too much like a nerd to bowl, maybe he’s here to align the lanes or something.”

Macy silently agreed, but watched as the ‘pinhead’ moved for the counter to get bowling shoes. Jason excused himself and moved to go serve him leaving Chris with the opportunity he wanted. It surprised him, but his laid back nature didn’t show a blip on the radar.

“I was hoping to talk to you about the rumor I heard about you fighting.” Chris said quietly and Macy looked between him and the ‘pinhead’ as she asked suspiciously, “Did you set him up to come in here and distract Jason so you could ask me that?”

Chris glanced at Dennis who was busy getting his shoes and then he gave Macy a straight look, “I’ll be honest with you, he does work with us, but I had no idea he was coming here. His name is Dennis. If I did know he’d come here; I’d have flattened his car tires before I left.”

“You should’ve flattened his head.” Macy mused as she glanced at Dennis, “He’s a ‘pinhead’ and I don’t like him. Let him know that and that I’ll flatten him if he gets in my way.”

Chris grinned, “It’ll be a pleasure, but I can tell you for a fact that Raul told us to stand down. I came because I heard about the fighting and I know that’s a different matter.”

Macy didn’t mind Chris, but Dennis was another story and it was difficult to be civil. She kept focused on her reason for being in the Fight Zone and replied carefully, “I took the fights for the money and you’re right it’s a different matter. I think there might be trouble brewing in the Fight Zone so I’m sticking around taking fights to look into it. The assignment on the other hand is different; with all of you in the vicinity of me it’ll be difficult to get anywhere near Curtis Robinson. If anything he probably already got word of you being around and is long gone.”

Chris could understand that and he nodded replying, “I realize that, but I only intended on coming to see you for a moment and leaving. Not sticking around and being a deterrent. I’ll also take Dennis with me when I go.”

Macy glanced at Dennis who’d claimed his shoes and replied, “You better had do that quickly because it looks like he’s sticking around to bowl.”

Chris glanced at Dennis and then moved for his jacket pocket, “I’m giving you my number so you don’t have to ask Raul to get in touch with me. If you want me to enter any fight just give me a call and I’ll be your back up while I’m supposed to be on stand down. Sometimes we work under Raul’s radar so we can finish the assignments faster; I’d be more than happy to help you on this one.”

He handed over the card promising, “No interference on your assignment Macy; just whatever is going on in the underground fighting.”

Macy took the offered card replying, “I’ll think about it Hulk.” He gave her a grin before turning and hurrying over to Dennis about to put on his bowling shoes.

Macy was treated to a spectacle of Chris grabbing Dennis by the back of the jacket and nearly carrying him out of the bowling alley. She nearly wanted to ask if he’d toss him down a lane, but Jason was watching with surprise and she held her tongue.

Perhaps she’d improved her patience because she was sure only a few months back she would’ve tossed Dennis down a lane just for the fun of it.

Tony had her back in mental form talking about Toula and tried to keep his uneasiness about Sammy’s fight with Les quiet. She knew Tony didn’t think Sammy could win the fight, but Macy couldn’t worry about that. She had serious money to earn and intended to ask Hammer to put up her bet. She also needed to know how much money had been accumulated and how much more to fight for.

Tony wanted to go see Sammy when they arrived and Benny was there already with Nicky and Moose. She spoke to Benny alone in her change room after greeting them.

“I’ll know after the fights tonight where Curtis is, but things are all going according to plan. Once he’s settled and been making a quiet life for himself in California I can start getting a message or two passed back and forth.”

Macy didn’t want to jeopardize her step father’s status and replied, “Only if necessary Hammer; if he’s fine I don’t need to know anything more.”

Hammer nodded and she asked, “How about the money? I know he can start earning his own later on, but how much to keep him going?”

Benny gave her a light grin, “Macy, I know you and I know you can get the money one way or another. Right now he’s set to get down there and stay for a while, but to set him longer I think after this fight you can cool it. I can get you some good bets for tonight and I know you’ll win.”

“I need the extra cash anyway Benny, in case I need to send him more money later. I’ll keep fighting a while longer, but keep putting up my bets as high as possible. When you think it’s enough to Curtis you can start setting up the money in an account here for me. I’ll need it for myself too and to keep handy.”

Benny nodded vigorously, “Sure Macy I got what you’re saying and I’ll get it done. I just have one delicate matter to discuss about Les Blancher.”

“What about Belcher?” Macy asked curiously, “Is he giving you gas?”

Benny appeared as concerned as Tony now and replied quietly, “Mace this guy is bad news, he could hurt Sammy tonight. Watch his back, I know we all are, and don’t start anymore trouble with him.”

Macy narrowed her eyes, “Too late, but I’ll watch Sammy’s back. As for Belcher, I don’t like him and I destroy anything I don’t like.”

Benny didn’t doubt that, but looked even more troubled than before and he nodded replying quietly, “Okay, I can only warn you, but we’ll be watching. Good luck tonight, not that you need it. You should be giving me good luck for the bets.”

Macy replied on cue, “Good luck on the betting Hammer.”

The procedure before the fight was pretty much the same as before, only Macy was looking for Les while she kept an eye on Sammy. Sammy was quite at ease, busy warming up and prepared for his fight. Meanwhile, Macy was eyeing all the people in the back area before the fight. With all the excitement building back there it was difficult to get a read on anything.

It wasn’t until Fight Zone promoters Carter Doyle and Freddie Stevens appeared for the meeting of the fighters that she could get a good sense that Les Blancher was out to maim Sammy tonight. His expression was as grave as before and momentarily resting on her as a sign she’d sealed Sammy’s fate.

She was so primarily absorbed with Les Blancher that she barely took in Toula who seemed peeved by it, but Macy could care less.

When they regrouped by the monitors, Tony said to Sammy, “He’ll pull every dirty trick in the book with you Sammy. Don’t take him lightly.”

Sammy looked at Macy, “You’d be better off in my corner; you know I don’t take Belcher lightly.”

Macy glanced at Tony and then replied to Sammy, “I’ll come out with you then; we can both coach you.”

Tony looked at Macy sharply asking, “Are you serious? You have your own fight to prepare for. We’ll all be out there watching his back.”

“Never mind, it’s a deal Macy. We’ll both be out in each other’s corner. It’s not against the rules and I don’t mind if you don’t.”

Macy nodded at Sammy, “Deal, and if Belcher does mind I’ll beat his ass and then fight Toula.”

Sammy laughed, but Tony didn’t find any humor in it. He was busy looking around with concern wondering if he would need to step in before Les did serious damage to Sammy. He spotted an unfamiliar face in the group of officials with Carter and Freddie. He was wearing a referee ‘Fight Zone’ T-shirt, but Tony had never seen this man before. A huge guy with striking red hair and goatee to match; someone he’d definitely remember. He guessed since it was Les Blancher fighting, they’d hired a guy like him to be the official for them. Tony could see another good reason too; Blancher might not like any official call made and take it out on the referee and this one looked like he was capable of handling anything that came his way.

Macy didn’t notice the referee until they got out to the satanically designed ring and although she got the feeling this guy was definitely someone from Specially Hired she wasn’t positive. She could suddenly see why though; it had to be because of Sammy’s fight with Les. Les Blancher was dangerous and if Specially Hired got wind that an innocent like Sammy could be maimed, they would be there and this guy suddenly had the best access to stop the fight.

It made her wonder about the faith they had in Sammy and how her step father had faith in her. She believed Sammy had it in him to beat Les, but maybe fate was sending her a message that Sammy just wasn’t capable enough. Macy vowed to watch Sammy’s back tonight though and would be ready to help if need be.

Several people recognized her from her prior fight and cat called her, but she ignored them to talk to Sammy in the ring, “Keep your guard up now Sammy; watch for feints and keep out of his reach.” Sammy shot her a grin teasing, “Thanks Tony…um I mean Mace!”

If he wasn’t up in the ring, Macy would’ve belted him in the arm, she settled for grabbing one of his fingers hooked through the chain link fence as she warned, “Watch it or I’ll come in there and fight you instead.”

They turned their attention to the referee that suddenly entered the ring and an announcement was made that he was the official remaining in the ring for the fight. Tony had figured right and didn’t question the change, but Sammy called to the tall red hared man, “As long as you can stay out of my way I don’t mind where you watch from.”

Macy watched as the referee glanced between them all and saw something in his piercing jade green eyes that told her he had to be one of the most elite for Specially Hired. His glance fell on Sammy for a moment before he surveyed the rest of the area. Whoever he is, Macy thought quietly to herself, he’s caused plenty of damage before and perhaps a good person to keep as a friend.

Les Blancher was introduced and came out at his sauntering pace to a chorus of mixed reactions. When he arrived in the ring, the special referee took special interest in Blancher. Sammy shifted to speak quietly to Macy and Tony, “You’d think this ref wants to take him on. Maybe I should just stand here and let them duke it out.”

Tony didn’t comment, his grave expression told them what he thought, but Macy warned, “Then don’t get on his bad side Shadow. Live up to your moniker and keep out of the way in there.”

Blancher was busy waving aside the referee, “Go stand over there out of the way. I don’t need you.”

“Sure you do.” Sammy taunted, “He has to show you where the center of the ring is Belcher.”

The glare he got was washed over onto Macy with another sign that what he did tonight was down to her. Macy knew better though, Sammy had taken the fight on his own. He felt he could take Les Blancher and Macy could only stand by that; if Sammy was hurt it wouldn't be on her conscience.

Macy decided to remain quiet, but noticed the referee watching the transaction. Whoever the silent soldier was he definitely did his talking with actions and settled for observing and assessing the situation first. Once he got a read on things he would deliver a hard brand of justice.

The match got underway a moment later where a lot of taunting went first. Les Blancher seemed to be toying with Sammy and creating a show. The silent jade eyed referee was focused on them watching in expectation while Tony called to Sammy with tips.

Macy knew Sammy was picking up on Les Blancher's moves during the process and warned him, "He's holding back Sammy watch it." Her warning caused a smile to appear on Blancher's face and a second later he unleashed his deadly assault. It was suddenly evident that Blancher wanted to dish out punishment before he silenced Sammy permanently and Macy deemed that and the special referee as saving Sammy's life. She had to credit Blancher's speed as Sammy took too many lethal hits to the head that knocked him out.

The referee hadn't called the knock out because he was busy trying to clear Blancher away from Sammy's prone form on the mat. Macy climbed the cage right there to get into the ring, she didn't know where she was headed since Blancher still struggled with the jade eyed referee, but she saw Tony racing for the gate. He would tend to Sammy, so Macy perched from the top of the fence. A second later she made a wrestler type leap across the gap onto Blancher's back and wrapped her arms around his neck using the tightest choke while avoiding the referee who appeared surprised, but didn't try to stop her. Blancher did though with brute strength, but Macy hung on like she was dangling precariously off a cliff.

Her jaw as tightly clenched as her choke hold she didn't let up as she squeezed the air supply off. Blancher hadn't a chance since she'd caught him from behind and completely distracted, but the referee wasn't taking his eyes off them even though people were racing into the ring to help Sammy.

"Choke him out Mace!" She heard a voice yell through the stunned crowd...it was Nicky and Macy didn't let up on the hold until Blancher was unconscious where she let him go falling to the mat. The referee glanced between Blancher and her in surprise.

"You better get him out of here before he wakes up and causes a shit storm for this." Macy warned the referee before turning to check on Sammy's condition.

Tony was right next to him along with a medic and a kit. She ignored the referee taking her advice removing Blancher while she moved next to Tony asking, "How is he?" Tony glanced up at her, "The medic cleared his airway, but I don't know for sure yet."

Macy noticed Carter Doyle coming into the ring and waited for his reaction before saying anything. He checked with the medic about Sammy's condition first and learned an ambulance had been called. This indicated that Macy's fight had been suddenly cancelled and she wondered how Toula Kennedy would take this news.

A moment later she learned that Toula had seen Macy choke out Blancher and forfeited since she wasn't tough enough to face Blancher like that. She thought Macy was crazy and had left promptly after delivering her message for fear of repercussions. Her forfeit upset the betting pool, but after seeing Macy jump into the ring on Blancher the reactions were mixed.

Freddie and Carter had allowed them to go with Sammy with only a mention they would look into the matter; Fight Zone had shut down quickly with an ambulance arriving as they were sure legal woes faces them.

Macy caught a ride with Moose who drove Tony's car behind the ambulance; he was worried about Sammy, but told her they had loved her finish on Blancher. Macy guessed she'd hear about that for a while as well as hear from Les Blancher.

She left her gear in Tony's car as Moose had parked it in the hospitals parking lot in anticipation Tony would be a while.

It didn't take much work finding them as Tony was huge and word had gotten out to the authorities about the fighting. Macy let Moose do all the talking for them and while they waited for word on Sammy she noticed the authorities suddenly disappeared. She guessed special people had a special word with them. She wasn't surprised when Chris suddenly appeared looking like he fit right in with Tony and Moose.

"Mace, I heard you were here." Chris called to her so Tony and Moose wouldn't get nervous. Macy played it cool and looked at Tony, "He's Chris one of the guys I was telling you about."

She finished introducing them and Tony took in Chris's form with interest, "You could've gotten in Fight Zone easy, but after tonight I doubt they'll put up a match for a while."

"Man that sucks." Chris replied quietly, "I could use the extra money, but I understand."

Macy didn't comment as she hoped Chris had the sense not to ask about getting a fight. He looked at her asking, "Can I talk to you for a moment?"

Macy nodded and moved off with him waiting until they were well out of earshot before commenting, "This must be important if you're showing up here."

"Raul smoothed things over with the authorities about the fight, but I doubt the promoters will take a chance anytime soon."

"The fighting will continue in staged areas though. People actually do need to earn money and will set it up. Just don't ask for one now, I can get you in my way later on. Les Blancher is going to be gunning for me after that finish. What did your guy do with him? What was he like coming around?"

Chris gave her a genuine blank look asking, "Our guy? After Dennis, Raul went ape on all of us about interference. He gave me clearance to come here and let you know he made things cool."

"Bull shit," Macy replied, "maybe you aren't aware, but the ref tonight was definitely one of yours and the sudden lack of authorities and questions make it obvious that Raul smoothed it over. He sent you to snoop or something."

Chris held up his hands in mock surrender, "Cool out Mace, all I know is Raul told me he learned things went sour at the fight and this was where you were. If he's got one of us with our ear to the ground I don't know a thing about it. As for your referee tonight I can only think of one person that would be brass enough to get in there."

"A big silent red hared guy with green eyes." Macy replied letting up on Chris, "Raul couldn't possibly misplace him."

"That's the guy and he's been misplaced many times before. Jack has a habit of disappearing and then resurfacing with a lot of destruction suddenly making a big appearance. I swear I had no idea he was there tonight, but from what you say about being silent it means he wasn't there to destroy anything...just observe."

Macy was curious and suddenly asked, "Doesn't Raul have any kind of authority over this silent guy?"

Chris explained carefully, "Sort of, Jack's a guy that when he gets something cooking he mixes it up regardless of who's got the recipe. He's nicknamed Raven for his most constant style, where he sits up out of play observing and waiting for the moment to swoop in and make a kill. If it's on our radar he respects Raul's authority, but if it isn't he does his own thing. I can also tell you that when one of us catch a job he won't jump into the seat and take over, but he doesn't like the sidelines either. He'll put in an appearance like tonight, if Raul doesn't know he'll definitely be stressed over it."

"I don't like sudden appearances and interference because I have my focus on my agenda. I can't work him in without causing trouble, but you're already in. You better be sure they know that back at the Specially Hired headquarters. Blancher's only going to be pissed by your Silent Raven guy because he interfered, but his bigger beef is with me. I'll let you take him, but you'll have to show me you can take him before I set you up."

Chris gave her an easy grin, "It sounds like fun...as long as I don't have to paint myself green." He extended her a hand and she took it replying, "No green paint, but we could make your hair go wild and green for a gimmick effect Hulk."

She received his cool grin and returned it with a wry one, "Get Vic and we'll meet tomorrow for a test of skill. I'll meet you in the bowling alley parking lot around one."

Chris nodded and they released hands. Having formed a cool friendship Chris took a chance asking, "Can I deliver a message for you about your assignment to Raul?"

Macy wasn't sure what the status of Curtis was at the moment and although she liked Chris she took the chance lying carefully, "There's a high chance I might be too late to complete the assignment. I know word is out to make contact, but the longer I wait for reply the chances are he's gone."

Chris seemed surprised to hear this and Macy added for effect, "If I don't hear anything by the end of tomorrow night I'm afraid to admit it, but it's out of my hands. I don't want someone like your Silent Raven chasing him down, but my word of defeat means I have absolutely no choice but to accept that."

Chris nodded replying quietly, "That's a tough spot Mace. I'll tell Raul and request that if it's one of us for the assignment to go easy."

The reply made her feel slightly guilty, but the image of Curtis and his strong faith had been burned into her head. She shrugged, "I accept what I can't control, but will fix what I can. I'll focus on Les Blancher while waiting and you can check him out on your own if you're careful."

Chris nodded and then said, "I'll see you tomorrow, but I hope your buddy in here pulls through okay."

He disappeared and Macy returned to Tony and Moose. When they got word Sammy was doing okay without complications they called it a night and left.

Chris waited while Raul went through calling all contacts getting in touch with Jack each message was the same. It wasn't about his surprise guest referee job that he was trying to make contact. It was Chris who needed to talk to him about Macy and the situation.

"I need rest for tomorrow and a private place for some training. Vic said he'd look into one, but told me to check with you." Chris informed when Raul was done watching as his boss nodded and ran his hands through his hair. It was a stressed habit he had that reminded him of the wig jokes.

"Not a word about a wig." Raul warned before adding, "You can go home and wait for Jack's call."

"You pulled the rug out from under me too quick to joke boss." Chris quipped, "But I bet Jack calls me before ten minutes. Anything after that and he's busy."

Before Raul could reply Chris's cell phone rang and he settled for a glare as Chris answered his phone.

"Is Raul pissed?" Jack asked curiously, "I'm not even sure this isn't a set up so he can get me, to chew me out."

Chris grinned as he replied, "You got bigger problems with Macy. Do you have time to meet me?"

"In other words Raul's pissed and you can't talk or he'll jump in." Jack mused before agreeing, "I can meet you and we can talk. I'll swing by your place and fill you in. I'm sure Macy will want to know about Blancher."

"She is and I'm on my way. I'll give Raul a big hug for you." Chris replied before disconnecting and grinning at Raul who glared again, "Give him a warning from me and I'll pass on the hug. Make sure he knows he's in a precarious position right now and I am so close to letting his ass fly in the sling. If Macy sticks a spike in his ass I seriously am going to tell him I told you so."

Chris held up a hand cutting in before Raul could go on, "Chill boss, Macy knows the good guys and I'll give Jack the warning. I'm in so it'll be cool."

"You'd be cool in a sauna." Raul griped behind him as Chris moved to leave.

A moment later Chris met Jack who appeared as though he didn't intend on staying long.

"She was pissed off at me, but I bet glad now I refereed." Jack guessed before adding, "I heard Sammy had a crushed trachea and the medic on scene saved his life."

Chris didn't want to speak for Macy and replied, "She didn't say, but she told me Blancher will be gunning for her and expects that. She knew you were with us and inquired about Blancher. She'll try and get me in, but definitely didn't like your appearance. She nearly took my head off because I didn't know you were there."

"It was a spectacular finish; tell her it's worth the shit storm she'll give me for being there. You should've seen her dive from the top of the cage onto Blancher while I was trying to keep him back from Sammy. She's one tough woman because that Blancher is deadly and she choked him out."

"I don't need to see her to know she's tough. Steve Evans is tough enough proof for me. Meanwhile unless they call you, you better had disappear and let me take it. Macy's meeting Vic and I tomorrow, so unless Blancher wants to rip up your black and white striped shirt find another sand box to mess up."

"What if I can't disappear?" Jack asked with a mysterious expression that Chris didn't like, "I should also tell you Raul isn't covering you and said if Macy sticks a spike in your ass he'll say I told you so. Don't step on my toes too Jack, I have big feet too."

"I don't mean fighting Blancher; I've got another angle." Jack replied with amusement, "Blancher and I had a little understanding after he woke up."

Chris simply watched Jack as he waited for more, but Jack was silent...'Silent Raven' it suited the big soldier and Chris warned, "If you aren't filling me in then tell Macy because if your paths cross unexpectedly into her she won't be cool with you and we need her on board. She's too deadly to leave or have against us."

"When I get myself established I'll fill you in. Right now it's better things are unexpected for a realistic effect."

It was all he said before he turned and left leaving Chris in thought...Macy is going to be pissed to hear about this.

She was when he told her while waiting for Vic to arrive, but Chris had time to think it over and hoped to ease the dagger expression on her face.

"The way he's interfering is from the other end of us, Blancher's side. He needs to get in and set before he can fill us in. Meanwhile it's realistic if we don't know what's up."

"You must be tougher than I thought." Macy mused irritably, "Because when we get to sparring soon you're getting my frustration in full force."

Chris nearly wished it was Jack in his position, but took it in his laid back manner inquiring, "Whatever happened to 'don't shoot the messenger?'"

"Oh it still exists," Macy replied, "and if I didn't like you it would've occurred. I'm going with the expression 'Maim the messenger in response to the crappy message'. You're also lucky you're physically needed and I can't hurt you too bad."

"Thanks." Chris said as he spotted Vic pulling in, "I think...at least I'll have a witness."

"Will you? Maybe he'll be distracted getting equipment." Macy retorted and Chris looked at her with surprise as she added, "With all the black and blue you'll wish you were green."

When Vic pulled up he got the door for her politely and she warned, "That won't work either and make sure nothing important gets caught in the door when I close it." Chris let go of the door and moved for the back door.

Vic watched as Macy tossed her bag down in the foot well in front of her as she closed the door and asked, "Should we have invited Jack to the practice?"

"I'll clip 'Silent Raven's' wings if he isn't careful." Macy warned as she clicked her seat belt in place.

Vic glanced at Chris in the back asking, "Did you forget anything?"

"Yes, I left my common sense at home in the bathroom." Chris replied musing, "I'm more concerned about sparring than fighting Blancher."

"Please." Macy replied firmly, "You are a Huge, Unusual, Laid back; Killer. I don't think a little sparring and practice concerns you. Now where are we going?"

She looked between them, but they were both un-deciphering the Acrostic she just gave them. Chris was busy using a finger to write while Vic mentally got it and laughed, "Don't hurt your brain Chris, it stands for HULK."

Chris grinned as he remarked, "Cool, it does. What about Vic?" Macy looked between them shrugging, "I don't know, Victim In Combat?"

Vic pulled away quickly answering her question, "We got a place set up that only we know about. Jack set it up by way of apology for interfering."

"Good, I hope to enrage Hulk back there so he can help destroy the place." Macy replied before asking, "Can we stop at a pet store along the way? We could help with their waste removal."

"Just a second, we already do waste removal of all the filth in the city." Chris griped, "Why do we need to do pet waste?"

"Because you're Specially Hired In Toronto." Macy replied allowing them to figure that one out and both of them laughed.

"We're S.H.I.T. Vic." Chris chuckled as he mused, "It's absolutely true and none of us have come up with that one."

Vic agreed, "I can't wait to tell Sean he's S.H.I.T."

"Dennis first, and your Silent Raven is a close second if he doesn't keep clear." Macy retorted before thinking to ask, "Is Dennis going to stick his nose in again?"

Vic didn't know and glanced at Chris who informed, "I know Raul went nuts on him and told me to tell Jack if you spiked his ass he'd say I told you so. I did tell him, but everyone is accountable for themselves. So if they show up in a bad way we're definitely not getting in the way."

Vic agreed adding, "I'll help you hold Dennis down."

Chris asked curiously, "Can you figure a way we can get Sean's nose in this? I'd love to hold him down."

Vic glanced at Macy asking, "Do you have a beef with guys that give everyone an Evil grin?"

Macy thought about the Satanically like star ring that Fight Zone used and suddenly asked, "Is he the guy that designed Fight Zone's ring?"

"The fighting ring?" Vic asked before adding, "I don't think so, why?"

"It's star shaped." Macy informed, "But I don't think you'll get a chance to see it."

Can I get a pair of ripped green shorts to fight in?" Chris asked curiously, he was getting to like his Hulk name.

"Why are you asking?" Vic inquired, "Just go get a pair."

Chris grinned as he shrugged, "I thought this was question hour and wanted to join in."

Macy glanced back at him and he added, "My next question was about working on a growl." She reached back and slugged his leg, "Work on your grunt first."

Chris did grunt and Vic laughed, but stopped when Macy looked at him, but she quipped, "Don't stop, your laugh needs work."

Vic didn't continue laughing as he concentrated on his driving and Chris asked seriously, "Are you always like this Macy? Or when you know us better do you get worse?"

"Worse?" Macy asked as she looked back at him again readying her fist for another punch. Chris shifted correcting, "Tougher."

Macy left him alone replying, "What you see is what you get. If you're nice, I'm nice."

Vic turned off as he mused, "In that case, I'll get you a nice seat cushion for your next ride in here Macy. I can also have a beverage ready for you too."

"The cushion is courteous enough; the beverage might wind up in someone's lap." Macy warned as she glanced at Chris who grinned, "I'll get you a beverage too, that way you'll still have one to drink if you did dump one."

"I have dumped coffee in a lap before." Macy warned, "I gave an annoying guy a pair of hot pants right after Raul left Tim's."

"I have to ask Owen to invent water proof Kevlar underwear." Chris mused prompting Macy to ask, "For your night time bed wetting problem?"

Chris ignored Vic who laughed as he replied, "For the next time I wind up in another crap yourself situation."

Vic glanced at Macy as he continued to laugh hoping he wouldn't be next on the verbal assault.

"Don't ask me about that." Macy said to him, "I thought Hulk was such a laid back guy he was a commando going commando."

They both laughed and Macy ignored it as she got back into focus. Blancher was a serious matter and she needed to prepare them both. It seemed they picked up on her change of emotions because after the laughter they were quiet.

She followed them into the nondescript building toting her Yin Yang gear bag watching as Chris carried his own bag making her compare the big soldier to Tony. Tony relied on brute force with his skills where Chris looked like he hid plenty of fighting skills and used strength in them.

Macy would find out momentarily just how good he was and recommended he warm up with Vic while she watched. If anything there was no rust on their skills and Macy detected wrestling in Chris's repertoire. She also saw a few moves of a football lineman, but it wasn't enough to satisfy her curiosity of his skills and time to give him a real test. She wore her Proforce Combo guards with the Adidas shoes. Adjusting the Harbinger gloves she waited until both of them were most distracted before moving in.

Using Chris's size to block herself from Vic's view she shot in quickly using her legs to trip them both down. Using her legs to pin Vic's closest foot down she used an elbow to Chris's rib cage catching both of them by surprise. Letting Vic go she shifted to pin the arm Chris was using to pin it slipping into position to pop his elbow.

"Macy, what the hell?" Vic asked in a hurt tone as he moved away. Macy felt Chris tap her with his free arm and released the hold replying, "You didn't expect me to just watch while you two have fun."

Vic offered her and Chris a hand up and she took it looking at Chris as he stood too, "Lesson one Hulk; guard all limbs and your neck from holds. Blancher probably knows them and it's best to assume he does and simply protect yourself. Don't leave yourself open to attack pushing him off like you just did with me."

"Blancher is different to you Macy; I'd never leave myself open." Chris replied as he flexed his elbow and Macy replied, "Lesson two, practice like it's real for experience. As of now, I'm fighting like Blancher would and you defend like a pissed off Hulk or your going to wind up with Blancher's foot in your ass."

Vic didn't comment as he watched while Chris nodded and they both sparred. It was awing to observe them of opposite sizes training. Near the end they were interrupted by Macy's cell phone ringing and Chris took a break while she answered.

"Mace it's Tony with an update; Sammy is doing okay now." Tony informed, but Macy detected trouble in his tone and waited as he went on, "He should be up and around in a few days while he recovers. They expect him to come out in a few days and be back to normal within a few weeks. He's pissed he can't eat his regular diet and work out, but says the pain isn't bad. He heard about your finish and asked about you. I can let him know when you're coming to visit when I get back from his place for a few things he wanted."

Macy toyed with a lace on her shoes replying quietly, "I'm glad to hear he's doing good Tony. I'm currently doing some training with my buddy Hulk."

She glanced at Chris and Vic who watched quietly as she listened to Tony who finally gave her the news she waited for, "That's also a subject we need to discuss. Fight Zone is in limbo, word is its clear, but they're concerned it's a ruse to catch them. Carter said after the fight tons of offers were coming in for you. He said we could set it up using their facilities, but not be in it. If the fight runs smoothly they'll come in again. I've got a selection of opponent's for you, but didn't know if your buddy wanted in like this. Plus there's Blancher...Carter and Freddie said the rental of the facilities and ring will double if he's in any match."

Macy had yet to hear the stipulations about Blancher, but glanced at Chris as she said, "Hulk here would take any fight to avoid getting a beating from me Tony. Even if it's a thumb wrestling fight."

Chris stuck his thumb up and Macy listened as Tony said, "Okay, I'll find him someone and get back to you. Meanwhile Blancher is double pissed off with you; promise me you're not going to make Hulk take him on. Or yourself for that matter; just leave it."

"We can discuss that one another time Toenail; tell Sammy I'll come by some today." Macy said quietly listening as Tony warned quickly, "Mace seriously just leave it; look what he did to Sammy and he wasn't pissed off."

"I have to go, but I'm not ducking Blancher." Macy said firmly, "I know you won't play it down on me because you know my reaction. Just chill out and worry about Sammy bugging you."

She disconnected and Vic asked, "He wants you to avoid Blancher?"

"He's worried about him." Macy said as she slipped her phone away, "But there's no word of challenge from him. Just others still hoping Fight Zone survives. The promoters will rent the facilities, but not be involved. Tony's getting matches for us together and said if Blancher gets one we pay double the rental for insurance."

"You know it's cool because Raul squared it away." Vic mused quietly, "Jack's getting in from the other end and we don't know what to expect at the next fight. All that said Macy...can you get me in too? Chris and you will be busy and I can help watch your backs."

Chris stayed quiet while he watched Macy for her answer, "I can squeeze you in as a trainer for Hulk, but we'll need to emphasize your status with Tec and the Golden Dragons."

Vic agreed, "No problem there, but what's next for Blancher? If Chris gets a fight with him we'll need to plan for it."

"I'm not sure yet, but your 'Silent Raven' would know what's next. Regardless of who takes on Blancher, he goes down."

Chris's cell phone rang and he stretched into his bag for it joking, "It can't be Toenail; he doesn't know my number."

He looked at the display reading 'Raven' and kept the coolest he possibly could as he answered, "Hulk here, what's up?"

He hoped Jack got the hint that Macy was sitting right there and listened to the pause of silence before Jack finally instructed, "Don't say anything and just listen. It's a crises-cross Chris."

Chris's expression went perplexed and Macy glanced at Vic who appeared surprised.

"Blancher is hired to kill by way of fighting and I told him I would exchange targets with him to avoid suspicion following our hits. Take your fight with him when it's challenged and we'll take him out together."

"What about-?" Chris started to ask, but Jack interrupted, "Macy needs to take my challenge you'll-."

Macy snatched the phone from Chris's hand suddenly prompting surprised reactions, but she got the feeling this was a call she wanted in on and listened as Jack was finishing, "-so just tell her to do the same, but we won't be fighting because we're taking Blancher first."

"That's too bad." Macy mused quietly, "I was looking forward to snapping one of your wings."

Surprised Jack asked, "Macy? What did you do to Chris?"

Macy gave Chris a cold glance ignoring his probing for his cell phone and warned, "Hulk? He's fine for the moment, but he'll be eating Adidas shoes and swallowing teeth if he keeps trying to reclaim his phone. So now you can tell me what you just told him and make it good 'Silent Raven' or the next time we meet won't be nice."

It was quiet for a moment before Jack finally said, "Look, I hate surprise players in the game too. I mostly work alone and I know this is your fight, but I set up a crisscross. Blancher and I are taking each other's targets. Chris gets him in a match and we nail him. So I need you to go with it."

"You believe Blancher will go for it?" Macy asked curiously; she could see no sign it would play out that way. It would be down to her to stop Blancher especially since he was gunning for her anyway.

It was quiet on the other end of the line and Macy nearly thought Jack had hung up, but he finally said, "He agreed and if he goes back on his word he'll be very sorry."

"He'll take you out first before you know it." Macy informed quickly, "That's Blancher's style, strike first strike hard. I'm not going to argue it with you, but since you have it set I won't select different music to play. We'll follow your music sheet 'Silent Raven' just don't be surprised if Blancher plays conductor and throws his baton in."

"Thank you." Jack replied quietly, "And if I could've done this without upsetting the game I would have, but Blancher is a serious target and we need to eliminate his threat."

"Just keep out of my way in the future or you'll find yourself facing a bigger threat." Macy warned, "I'll let Hulk have his phone back now; he's turning green with anger I took it from him."

She handed him back his phone and Chris took it wisecracking, "I'd make a joke about cooties, but I'm not itching for-." Macy slugged him and he grunted before saying into the phone, "Next time you want to send me a message do it in the form of a smoke signal; it's less painful."

"As long as we're all set, that was it." Jack replied, "She'll get over it and with some elite training she'll be a good addition to our team."

"Specially Hired In Toronto," Chris mused quietly, "we're all in it. Catch you later Jack."

He hung up leaving the big man to think it over before looking at Macy who said, "Training is over and when we part I'll need a number to reach you by about tonight."

Chris handed her his phone saying, "Put your number in there and then dial it; you can get my number from your phone."

Macy did the same and took Vic's number from the phone too. Not long later they were showered, changed and back in Vic's car where Macy was about to be dropped off at the bowling alley where they'd met.

Hearing a loud whoosh from behind her, she looked back to see what Chris was doing. Upon seeing the huge orange monster energy drink of Jolt she asked, "What the Hell? Did your drink get a blast of that accidental overdose of gamma radiation too?"

Vic cracked up laughing and Macy looked at him quickly warning, "Don't get it angry Vic, it sounded like it was already turning into a Hulk drink."

Chris was chuckling as he drank and Vic repeated, "Accidental overdose of gamma radiation, Raul has to hear that one."

Macy shrugged and glanced at Chris enjoying his energy drink, "You should've had one before the workout."

"I did," Chris retorted, "this one is to restore the energy."

Before Macy could punch him he moved so she waited until they got out of the car before getting him.

After making a visit to Sammy which was rather depressing in the hospital, Macy decided to make a call on Hammer. She needed to get an update on Curtis and find out what the street word was on Blancher. Since Tony was busy handling the fights, she didn't encounter him there.

Rapping knuckles with Nicky she said, "Thanks for yelling at me and telling me what I was about to do at the fight Nicky."

Nicky grinned proudly, "I thought you were just going to tease him up there on his back."

"You mean put my hands over his eyes and play guess who?" Macy inquired before adding, "No way, I only do that with you Nicky."

Looking at Benny who chuckled, "Nobody likes Blancher; it was a beautiful finish."

Taking a seat, Macy nodded, "Thanks, but I can't take all the credit; Blancher helped looking like an idiot."

Benny grinned before he said, "Word just came around from Tony to meet right away at Fight Zone for tonight's preparations. The ring was set up earlier for storage there before they changed their minds and rented it to us. We're taking bets as soon as we can; Tony has my backing on it."

Macy replied, "I'll head over as soon as I leave here. I should check for signs of a bust anyway, but I mostly came to hear about Curtis."

"He was crossing Pennsylvania and clear the last report I got. He should be in California and set up by tomorrow evening if things go as planned. Traffic and car problems will be the only delays to expect now; I had some people go with him to take turns driving."

Macy was relieved to hear this and could now tell Raul the assignment was definitely out of her range. Things had settled on that point and now she had Blancher to handle.

She headed for Fight Zone deciding on finding out what the situation was there before calling Chris and Vic for an earlier meet for more practice. There was no need to bring them there without knowing first hand it was set and clear.

It was quiet when she arrived and Macy sensed something was up the second she got near the Satanically shaped ring. Toting her gear bag, Macy continued to the back where she saw one ring attendant who she recognized and called to him, "Where is everyone?"

She didn't like his expression and his reply sounded rehearsed...and maybe coerced, "Tony said to get ready and meet him in the ring."

The worker glanced at the opposite change area where her opponent's had used telling her that someone was there. She didn't look in the direction, but guessed it had to be only one person she'd recently pissed off...Les Blancher.

"Stick around." Macy ordered, "You'll definitely want to witness this."

Turning to head in to get changed Macy suddenly had a premonition that this worker definitely would be a witness later on. Her and Blancher were about to have it out and he would likely be called as a witness to testify that this was a set up.

After she was ready, Macy head out to the ring, but only the worker was there and he looked ready to run out of there. Macy looked for Blancher and stopped at the worker asking, "Well, where is Belcher? Does he need help finding the ring?"

"You should go now while you have the chance," He replied quietly, "that's what I'd do."

Macy pointed to the nearest chair, "Sit and learn, next time bring a recording device."

Turning she head into the ring and scanned the entire building from it in a circuit calling out, "What's the matter Belcher? Did you get both feet stuck in one leg of your neon tights?"

She spotted a big red hared man enter the building and paused to look at him calling to him, "What is this 'Silent Raven'? A set up?"

His jade eyes focused on her momentarily before scanning the building answering, "Blancher called me here."

Macy was watching him now as she asked, "So you're here to fight me first?"

She saw the worker glance behind her from the corner of her eye and sensed Blancher approaching from behind. It was too late to react as she heard him announce, "No, he's here to watch."

Grabbed from behind around the middle, Macy wasn't phased as she swung her elbow backward toward his head. It was a perfect elbow to the eyeball in the socket causing him to let go of her quickly. Out of the corner of her eye she saw Jack approaching, it was difficult not to miss the red of his hair, but Macy didn't pay any attention to him. Blancher wasn't subdued and Macy didn't dare take her attention off of him. His one hand held his eye as he cursed the other lunged for her in angry haste, but she was already moving, ducking him while she drove a fist directly into his other hand still holding his eye.

"That'll teach you to play the staring game with me." Macy taunted before labeling him with a kick to his kneecap sending him backward off balance. A shin to the ribcage pushed him over onto his back where followed the momentum reigning another set of fists and elbows to his head before he came to his senses and attempted to throw her. Macy straightened a leg to prevent the throw and narrowly ducked a punch.

Macy wasn't concerned with anything aside from pounding him into the mat. She didn't even care where Jack was, momentarily Steve Evans came into her mind and the jerk she'd beat up that tried to pull her into his car. They deserved it and so did Les Blancher who was trying to block her attack while attempting one of his own.

Another thought of Curtis telling her about the faith and knowing her came to mind and she let up...they were to bring in Blancher not beat him to death.

Her hesitation cost her as Blancher took advantage hooking her arm. His other hand worked to put her at leverage and length, but Macy chastised herself for giving Blancher any chance and brought her knee up directly into his chin once the leverage had been gained. It was a brutal hit because the bones made an audible crunch in his jaw. She was certain his teeth had also taken damage, but the resurgent adrenaline blocked out emotions of empathy or reasoning. She had no control over her strength as she suddenly blindsided him in fists and elbows striking the same injured areas halting his attack.

Blancher wisely switched to protecting himself, but Macy couldn't care less. Not even when the blood appeared and Jack called her to stop from somewhere close by.

It wasn't until a memory of her father suddenly appeared in her mind and she sensed his presence that she did let up again. With a suddenly rush back to reality she stopped short of beating Blancher to a pulp and looked around her.

They were center star of the ring; Jack hovering over them watching with concern. Macy felt the presence strong to her right side she thought she heard the warning 'stop now, don't make him die fighting'.

Before Jack drew near, Macy jumped away to her feet ignoring them looking around her. Only the worker was there watching with surprise, but she still sensed others there. Her mother, Geordie and suddenly she found the balance. Yin and Yang, the meditation all of it fell into place the second she had stopped herself from beating Les Blancher to death. He did deserve to die, but not by her hands and not if she could stop from doing it. Somehow she'd brought her limit back and balance again. It had been the memory of her father, they had been play wrestling. She had learned fighting from him and remembered now.

"Jesus Macy, for a minute there I thought you were going to beat him to death." Jack mused as he checked Blancher, "He's alive, but unconscious."

"I was going to 'Silent Raven'." Macy replied as she watched him knowing Blancher would survive, "Let's just call it an all around life experience and leave it at that."

Jack looked at her, his jade green eyes taking on the meaning without judgment as he replied quietly, "I've had many of those and will see many more in this line of work. I could go through a list of them, but right now I need to get him in."

Macy shrugged and said to the worker still gaping in surprise, "I bet you'll never go without a camera now." She turned and left the ring heading for the change room.

Chris drove as he glanced at Macy in the passenger seat next to her, "So I didn't take a beating from you for nothing?"

Macy had explained that they needed to take a few fights for appearance to look legit. She also wanted the money and didn't elude to that as she answered, "That's right, at the very least I need to. I needed the money for expenses on my assignment so I still need to play my part."

"What's your take on your assignment?" Chris asked curiously, "I'd offer to take it if you're out now, but Jack's our big international guy."

Macy doubted the big red hared soldier could find Curtis Robinson now and replied, "It's out of my hands now and if Jack gets the assignment he's seen what I can do and likely remember that if he finds Curtis."

Chris glanced at her musing, "You sure have that right, but I think Raul was counting on your help."

Macy could see that and would literally as they were headed for the Specially Hired Headquarters. Chris glanced again at her and then at her gear bag in the foot well at her feet asking, "Are you sure you're ready to fight tonight so soon after Blancher?"

Macy had visible bruising in various areas, but since Blancher she had been meditating at a peaceful level. She'd even started working on Shaolin Kung Fu training and expected to be meeting a Shaolin priest from a temple that traveled to various Kung Fu schools. He was accompanied by others trained in healing and various teachers.

"My skills indicate I am, but you meant mentally prepared." Macy answered without offense to the question as she explained, "You know how Belcher is different so it won't be the same; if anything it will be easier."

Chris shot her a grin at the name before asking, "Instead of dropping you off can I stick around to watch? I could go as your gear carrier."

Macy looked at her bag before looking at Chris who glanced as well suddenly adding, "We could stop for some bigger gear and I could carry that."

"Right," Macy played along, "give my junk a purposeful dose of gamma radiation and a few kicks to get it mad and inflate it."

Chris had taken even more of a liking to the 'Hulk' name and grinned as he reached behind him producing a huge green monster energy Jolt drink, "I was saving this for a parting welcome gift to the team, but just realized you might want to dump it on me and have so much fun you'll take it easy on Raul."

Macy pointed to the drink asking, "Are you sure I won't drink that and be even more trouble?"

Sliding the drink into a cup holder Chris laughed, "I'm asking for hazard pay delivering you to Raul for meetings."

Macy punched him hard in the arm and he flinched as she quipped, "There, actual hazard for hazard pay."

"I need to invent full body armor with reinforced sleeves." Chris mused as he glanced at her expecting another shot. None came and he was glad when they arrived.

Leading the way in Macy glanced around curiously asking, "Who's here? Anyone special I can dump an energy drink on?"

Chris shook his head answering, "As precaution Raul had the building cleared of all unnecessary soldiers. Our computer wizard is always here, but nobody potential for you."

Macy looked for signs of people replying, "Let me be the judge of that Hulk. He could be a fun guy missing a hard drive for all I know."

She heard keyboard clacking suddenly stop and looked into the room the sound had came from. A gray eyed darker blonde hared man looked at her from where he sat at a computer. Macy shot Chris a grin, "Hey Hulk, I just found your brother. Is he David Banner?"

"I am Owen Hollander." The computer expert informed, "Not a fun guy missing a hard drive or a character from a comic."

Chris paused with Macy adding, "He's also a nice guy." Macy looked at him asking, "You look like a line backer, but act like a cheer leader."

Looking at Owen she said, "I'm Macy, nice guy computer wizard Owen. Do you have other cheer leaders here vouching for you or is Hulk the entire squad?"

Owen glanced at Chris who gave him a pleading look that warned him to be civil. Wisely he made no cracks about Macy being a potential female squad member as he answered, "I believe he alone could fill the squad, but I don't need it. My personality and work speaks for itself. I think it's safe to say the same about yourself."

"Are you kidding?" Macy quipped, "Now I'm itching to get Hulk here into a green cheer leader outfit for me. I bet you could become a good friend to me and search that online for me."

Chris gave her a curious glance before looking at Owen who cracked up laughing, "Custom tailor's goes right at the top of my 'to do' list."

Macy looked at Chris musing, "He thinks I'm joking, but I need it for tonight's match."

She tapped his beefy arm adding, "Let's not keep Raul waiting; besides Owen has some work to do."

Chris continued glancing at her again curiously before saying, "You can't be serious."

Macy confessed, "Sort of, at the very least wear something green."

Chris led the way into Raul's office quietly watching as Macy accepted a handshake from Raul before taking a seat.

"Interesting place you have here Raul. 'Electronics' back there looks easy to wind up. If you suddenly get a bill from a custom tailor pay it. It'll be worth every penny to see Hulk here in a green cheer leader outfit."

Raul looked at Chris who observed with silent amusement and then said to Macy, "I take it you met Owen."

"Hulk's separated at birth brother?" Macy asked before answering, "Yeah I met 'Electronics' I hear he's a nice guy."

She shot Chris a wicked grin and he suddenly remarked, "Don't do that around here or people will think you're related to Sean."

Raul tried not to grin as he got on topic, "Les Blancher has been processed and the assignment complete on our end. He's currently recovering in a prison medical facility awaiting trial. Your assistance in the assignment has been officially recorded and I have payment here for you."

"One of Belcher's teeth in a jar?" Macy asked curiously, "Or did you get me a necklace?"

Raul handed her a check and she took it looking at it curiously as Raul instructed, "Since I didn't have your legal name I made it cashable. You can take it to your bank and put it in or cash it."

Folding it and putting it away in a pocket Macy said, "Thanks, I'll send Belcher a wreath."

Raul glanced at Chris who grinned as he suddenly asked, "Get well or rest in peace?"

"He can't read," Macy looked at him replying, "I was going to hire a big guy to deliver it dressed as the grim reaper. Are you interested in the job? We can ask 'Electronics' to get that from the tailor's too."

"You're not serious." Raul said making Macy grin at Chris who laughed with surprise.

Raul was glad to see they got along and sensed a camaraderie growing between them which was good because he intended to keep Macy on board permanently.

"Well it's either that or balloons delivered by a big guy dressed as a Devil, but I don't think I have enough to hire 'Silent Raven'." Macy said as she looked at Raul asking, "Unless you'd like to advance me on the next pay?"

"Forget it," Raul answered, "Jack would never go for it. Now to get back to business, I understand that your first assignment is not possible. Can you fill me in?"

Macy no longer needed to lie because Curtis was indeed gone, "Yes, Curtis Robinson is beyond my scope now. Before when I had a chance he didn't dare show because he was aware of your people being around. I don't have to mention Dennis and you're obviously well aware Jack stuck his nose in Fight Zone. He's gone now and I don't have the funds nor time to track him. Not that I would because at this point I hold no advantage over anyone else you have here."

Raul nodded and then agreed, "That's acceptable and you're officially off the assignment, but in lieu of your work with Les Blancher we still want to have you on board. Until completely trained here, I can still have you on several assignments one of which I'm currently looking into. That is if you're available and interested."

"Interested, yes." Macy said, "Available is sketchy, for appearances I need to take some fights."

"You're still taking fights?" Raul asked nearly balking, but saw the reasoning and sensing a stinging reply quickly added, "I'm surprised because the assignment is finished not because you can't handle it."

Macy let that one slide as she answered, "I was in need of funds and asked Tony to line anything up. I need to keep several more to make it appear I've got enough money now."

She could've cashed the new check and give it to Hammer to complete the funding for Curtis, but the extra money would be useful and the fights weren't tough.

Raul nodded and then asked, "So if you are officially on board I'll need to get some information from you. You can do that on the training day you come back. I'm not particular about when my soldiers come in and in your case with a reputation on the street I'm respectful of time you can appear. I just ask that you call. You can work a schedule with Chris for training as long as you make the effort it doesn't matter."

"That's no problem." Macy replied, "But I do have one stipulation before I sign on here officially."

Raul appeared worried, but listened as Macy went on firmly, "Absolutely no assignments like my first one; on family or friends. If I get asked to take down someone like Hammer or anyone closely related to me I won't be back."

Chris watched Raul closely wondering his reply. Macy waited quietly while Raul considered his reply before he extended a hand to her, "I think we have a deal."

Macy took his hand and they shook...it would be very interesting to see how this would turn out.
