Notes on specialization
By RM

As the system of modern capitalism continually expands tha ability to live our lives as we wish continually decreases. Specialization or division of labor which is created by capital limits and limits our ability to carry out our dreams. Specialization encourages passivity despite what advertising and media tells us. They say because we can choose what we want in life, what commodities we consume, what we want for careers etc. we are free. (they fail to note the less choice one has if one is poor) But such freedom is nothing more than accepting several choices given to us from above whcih we then fit ourselves into. SUch notion of "freedom" is nothing less than encouraged passivity which tends to be the opposite of true freedom which as I see it is the ability to live ones life as one sees fit. Such freedom of capital is that of one constanlty accepting situations as they come and continues the system rather than actively creating ones projects and goals in which they can live on their own terms. Such notions continues the mentality of a consumer even on a subconscious level, which we consume what commodified lifestyles and careers which were created and therefore already chosen for us by those who rule.

For clearity I will state my definition of specialization. Specialization as I see it is the imposition of a performance of a repetitive practice or role to better serve and enhance the system of capital. (The system of capital as I see it, is an existence where social relationships are arranged in general towards the production of surplus which is extracted from the peoples labor to the benifit of a minority.) The more specialization grows and varies the more social relationships are channeled from that of living ones life as one sees fit to that of social relationships which function through ordering and taking commands. Thus specialization at its basis is a form of imposed social relationships which function only by through domination to the benifit of capital.

As specialization continues to grow in accordance with capital, more and more aspects of our lives become mere choices imposed upon us from those in power. As such specialization can bring many to believe the system is something that happens to us and therefore lead many who oppose the present social order to attack and overthrow the system as if it were seperate form people. However in general, it is not the system in and of itself that is maintaing the system of capital which necessarily produces the specialized, alienated culture of capital. Certainly the system of capital does of course exist, however it is not above people acting independently of itself but is the product of social relationships which created and reproduced it. The system as I agree with other anarchists must be destroyed so must the social relationships which would necessarily continue specialization and thus capital.
