BO

A GOOD CHRISTIAN DOG
by Curtis Hatterman

As you can see from the above picture, my wife and I got Bo as a Christmas present for both of us.  Bo's mother lived with a family that was in the Air Force.  So, in order to see Bo for the first time, we had to go to Vance Air Force Base in Enid, Oklahoma.  The very first time we saw the new family, Bo was the only one of the litter who would leave his mother's warm body to greet us.  He could hardly walk that day, but he tried real hard.

My wife had read somewhere that whenever you bring a new pet home for the first time, that you should bring it home in the morning time.  That way the pet has all day to get used to the new surroundings.  So, we did, and it seemed to help.  We kept Bo inside the house and played with him that first day and everything was ok until bedtime.  Bo didn't want to be left alone that first night.  We made a bed for him in a wood crate that we left in the living room, but he didn't want any part of it.  And as we laid in bed trying to go to sleep, good 'ol Bo was trying to keep us up with his crying.

We tried every trick in the book.  We put a t-shirt I had been wearing all day in the box for him to lay on hoping that he would think I was in there with him.  No, it didn't work.  Next we tried the alarm clock trick, to no avail.  You guessed it.  Bo ended up in bed with us.  Between us.  Snuggled up to my wife.  And that's were Bo slept every night for the rest of his life.

It didn't take very long for Bo to see his first snow .  He learned as a puppy not to get his feet wet because my wife would always be there at the back door waiting for him with a towel in her hand to wipe his feet off.  And Bo always tried so hard to be good, he would almost tip-toe in the wet snow or grass to keep his feet as dry as possible.

It didn't take very long for Bo to need a haircut either.  And when we got him back from the groomers we found out that Bo's hair was turning from apricot to white .  We didn't expect that because his mother was apricot, but the white underneath the apricot did make him look cute.

As Bo started getting older he got bigger .  We soon started wondering just how large Bo would get.  But he only got as big as his mother was.  After a few haircuts Bo almost lost all of his apricot except on his ears .

The one thing Bo would hate was for us to go to work.  He would find any way he could to try to keep us at home, like laying on our coats and acting like he couldn't get up when we told him we needed our coats and for him to get off of them.

Bo was never spoiled .  And he was actually very intelligent .  And for an old dog who was twelve years old when he became diabetic and had to have shots every morning, he was a real trooper. And we shall forever miss him.
