Use of glass in framed displays
Use of glass is very dependant on the type, purpose, and location of the display.  When a display is going to be in a high traffic area always use glass.  If you have children that will be around it with friends, always use glass.  But, if the display is going in a den where traffic is closely monitored by you glass may be optional.  If the display is one you are studying and are looking at frequently then glass will hamper your efforts to closely study each artifact.

One word of warning when using glass in a display.  I highly discourage the use of decorated glass or glass with number on it (clock) being used in a display.  After years have gone by if the glass is broken you will have a hard time replacing it.  If you replace the original glass and it does not have the same design, the display will be unbalanced and give it the look of missing something.

Should you use glass in a display?  Well the major thought is Yes.  At one time this was my thought too, but now it depends on the display.

Glass is a great way to protect your artifacts keeping dust and dirt off while keeping your artifacts attached to your display.  When you have many people around your displays and children who love to touch things, sometimes artifacts can come up missing.

This all sounds great, but there are a few drawbacks to the use of glass.  Glass also keeps you from touching or closely examining the artifacts.  When light hits glass there is a glare that make it hard to see through.  It may also dull and hide the colors of the artifacts.
