" Operational Choices "

Setting: USS ANUBIS, Bridge
Being in charge of the ship's operations, the
Romulan/Terran hybrid found herself with little to do
other than to insure that everything about the ship
was functioning as it should, and this did not trouble
her as much as it would have a little while back. The
more time the COO spent working in her new field, the
more she became at ease with the requirements and
limitations of her new position, spending less time
envying the Sec/Tac and the duties that she had once
done with all of her devotion, in favour of exploring
the reach of her new duties.
Trying to understand and measure the threat
possibility of what the CSciO had presumably seen on
the planet, Lt. Seth had his hands full, a condition
shared by the CEO and CSciO who also worked on the
same problem but from their respective stations. The
CO had not wanted to take and risks, a stand that the
Romulan/Terran hybrid understood all too well.
Considering that the technology onboard the ANUBIS
permitted to remain unseen and that similar technology
was employed by other races such as the Romulans and
the Breen, dismissing what had been seen had not been
an option.
Having been convinced that she had not made an error,
the CSciO focussed all of her efforts in trying to
break the shield of invisibility that she was certain
had been the cause of the sudden disappearance of what
she had seen. The metallic mass had been too large
and concentrated to have been anything else but a
ship, but Maya kept her mind open to other
possibilities as she always did. Using the resources
of the IGC and the help of Cmdr. Rikar, the CSciO was
sure that the mystery would be solved in no time, one
way or another.
Not at all happy with the possibility that the report
made by the Shillian had been caused by yet another
equipment malfunction, David busied himself at
verifying every systems relating to the ANUBIS’
sensors. Every time the CEO felt a little less
apprehensive about the ship, something happened to
make him reconsider his initial position on the design
of the Scarab-Class and many of the integrated systems
that had been put onboard.
With the majority of the senior staff’s focus on the
mystery at hand, the COO continued to monitor subspace
for any sort of communication that might indicate that
another ship was in the vicinity, be it on the planet
surface or near TOLAR IV. Having found nothing in
that range, the Romulan/Terran hybrid returned her
attention to the aft sensors and the Hirogen Tracker
that they had left behind. If their course and speed
had remained unchanged, the Venatic-Class ship would
appear on their long-range sensors very soon, adding
yet another variable to their situation.

Stardate: 10298.1424
Setting: TOLAR IV, Inside an unknown ship, Engineering section
Having required all available power to be diverted to
a single piece of equipment, the lights in the room
had gone out the moment the switch had been thrown.
“The cloaking device is working, I think. I can’t
seen anything with the light out and I can'tmake heads
or tail of these readings. For all I know we might be
glowing bright pink.”
The voice of an unimpressed fellow shipmate pierced
the surrounding darkness. “It was either the lights
or the air and heat, and frankly I’d rather stump my
toes on a few corners of this ship than be asphyxiated
and have my body frozen where it fell for prosperity.”
A loud thud followed the voiced confirming that one
of them had indeed hit something. “That’s it! I’m
not moving from this spot. I don’t care what that
pompous ass says, I’m staying right here.”
Although agreeing with the description of their
employer, the other engineer had not been so ready to
voice his opinion out in the open for fear that
someone loyal to the ship’s CO overheard it. The two
engineers had been hired to help out with the ship’s
systems which at that time they did not know included
an antiquated Romulan Cloaking Device. That neither
of them had actually seen the officer in command of
this ship had only serve to fuel their curiosity and
apprehension about the job that they had accepted.
Time would tell if they would be made to regret the
choice they had made in joining this little adventure.
