Setting: TOLAR IV - Planet Surface
Xan walked purposefully two strides ahead of the women, which suited Enaii well enough as she had no desire to have the man at her back. It was fortunate that his ego overpowered his self preservation instinct, otherwise he’d have insisted the two strangers take the lead.
Beside her, Nikita shivered, rubbing her hands up and down her arms as though cold, though Enaii recognised it for what it really was… nerves. Originally she had looked forward to sharing her life with her old friend, the allure of having the 'three musketeers' back together had driven her to choose Niki over all other more suitable candidates, somehow she had expected the woman would easily adapt to Intel life, as Jack had… but it was clear now that this was not the case. All she had left to do was hope that Nikita’s inexperience and unwillingness to be a part of this sphere would not compromise their mission.
Masking a sigh in a puff of breath vapour, Enaii resolved to get them back to the ship as soon as possible. Where any delay could endanger the life of the captive officer, Nikita’s nervousness, without a doubt, would get them into serious trouble if left unchecked long enough.
“Not much further now,” Xan called over his shoulder as a windswept mound of snow and ice came into view over the horizon, “I believe it’s just over that hill.”
“God I pray that it’s warm where we’re going,” the Marine whispered, low enough that only Enaii heard it, though she doubted she was intended to hear the woman’s muttered prayer. This was certainly not the life where one could depend on such nonsense, in her experience, the Operative had yet to have a prayer answered in time to affect any outcome.
Feeling her heart drop just a little, Enaii pushed the emotion of the pending decision from her soul, this was not the time for mental debate or depression. There was more than one life in her hands at this very moment and she knew that she had to be completely here in this moment to ensure that none of them perished.
Off in the corner of her eye Enaii’s attention was caught by a silver reflection, like that of a distorted mirror in the sunlight. Turning to look she thought she glimpsed a metallic silhouette, but less than a split second later it was gone, a trick of the environment perhaps, a cloaked ship maybe… either way, her guards went up and she began so survey their surroundings like a mouse expecting an owl to swoop down upon it any second. She no longer felt Xan was the highest threat to their security and indeed their mission… if they didn’t get to the Mind Source before whoever was out here with them, Xan would no longer have a reason to keep them around, making their rescue of Lea nearly impossible.
Increasing her pace, Enaii joined the side of their current leader, “Let’s kick up the pace a bit alright,” she demanded, Nikita catching up to them and keeping stride. “The sooner we’re off this planet the better.”
