"Another Miracle"

Stardate: 60298.1457
Setting: USS ANUBIS, Bridge
Watching her ACT classmate work in the manner that he
was made the Romulan/Terran hybrid realize how lucky
the ANUBIS was to have someone like him on staff.
Engineers were a brand of officers apart from the
rest, and to David's credit he was one of those that
stood out from that already elite crowd.
Returning her eyes to her console, the Romulan/Terran
hybrid observed what the COO could not see from
observing David from where she sat, the computer of
the ship processing the rapid sequence of commands
given to it by the CEO. The distance between the
ANUBIS and the Breen ship steadily decreased as did
the time to impact but the COO help tight to her
convictions that the man she had known since the
Academy would be able to pull yet another miracle to
save them from a situation that they would all prefer
to avoid. With Dawson's skills, expertise and a
little bit of luck they would get out of this little
problem and many more to follow.
Shattering the silence that had engulfed the bridge,
the CEO gave a cryptic command that everyone heard but
no one knew if it had been directed at them. Tension
and probably his proximity to the longwinded CSciO had
caused David to be a little too short with his words.
"Now!"
Scanning her console, the Romulan/Terran hybrid
reviewed as fast as she could what the CEO had been
trying to do and quickly realized that the command
given had been directed to her, unless David had
expected the Sec/Tac officer to fire powerless weapons
at the Breen frigate. Pressing the controls in
accordance to what she had believed her ACT classmate
had wanted, the COO engaged the modifications that had
been put into place and waited to see the result.
Returning with the same intensity that it had before
the single words had been spoken, the silence that had
invaded the bridge returned as the members of the
senior staff waited with baited breath for the COO's
report or for the distinct signs of a collision. When
the Romulan/Terran hybrid made her report, not a
single sound could be heard on the command deck, even
the normal operational background noise having
apparently stopped for this moment of truth. "Forward
motion has stopped. We are now perfectly matching the
Breen ship's speed and heading."
Glancing at the two officers standing at the back of
the bridge, the CO smiled and nodded his head in
thanks and appreciation for the work done. Had this
meant the end of all their trouble the Captain might
have broken out into a full blow congratulation and
celebration but this was neither the time nor place.
Returning his attention to the forward section of the
command deck, the CO asked, "Are we still in any
condition to proceed with the energy feedback?"
Insuring that this had in fact been the case, the
Romulan/Terran hybrid surveyed her instruments before
answering the Captain's question. "Affirmative, at
our current distance from the Breen ship our contact
with the field should be able to trigger a feedback in
less then 10 seconds."
Still not entirely convinced that everything had been
right where they had wanted them to be, and not
entirely believing that luck was not a very sharp
two-edged sword that equally took as it gave, the CO
turned to the Sec/Tac station, "Any sign that we have
been detected?"
Looking at his console with great care to insure that
he would not report something erroneous, Rawyvin took
several seconds before making his report, the partial
grin on his face hinting that the news had been a good
one. "The energy output of the Breen ship has
remained constant during all of this and there does
not appear to be any changes in their tactical
situation. If they have detected us in any way they
are not making a big deal of it."
The CSciO jumped in with her observations, the rate
her words were coming out even faster than normal
something that the Romulan/Terran hybrid had truly
thought to be a physical impossibility. "The Breen
are not known for ignoring anything that might pose a
threat to them or their goals and since the energy
field generated by the frigate contains a very high
percentage of charged particles it is easily
conceivable that they have not detected us, in fact it
is even probable that like us they had to sacrifice
many of their systems in order to make this possible
and because of their position compared to that of the
other ships I would imagine that the Breen sacrificed
short-range sensors in favour of keeping their
long-range observation tools operational."
Rawyvin nodded his agreement, surprised with himself
that he had been able to follow the high speed report
as well as he had. "That does sound like a sound
tactical move on their part. If they were expecting
the other ships to flee once they arrived, they would
have wanted to make sure that none of the ships
doubled back after a short period of time or called in
reinforcements. Once the deception was complete, they
would have likely dropped the energy field and
restored their systems."
It was the COO that interrupted the tactical
evaluation with her report. "Energy feedback will
reach optimal level in two seconds."
Turning back to the CEO once again, the CO gave an
order that he had been waiting to give for far too
long. "Lt. Dawson, as soon as we have confirmed that
the Breen ship is disabled, bring our systems back
online and get us the hell out of here."
Smiling like a Cheshire cat, David nodded. "Already
working on it sir. We will be on our way and with
full shields before the feedback does any real damage
to that ship."
Looking at her instruments, the CSciO jumped in with
her own report. "Reading an massive energy build-up
in the Breen's main systems, it will likely cause a
complete system's shutdown which might result in the
ship losing all power or create a cascade failure that
will cause the ship to explode."
Not at all liking the last part of the last report,
the Romulan/Terran hybrid kept a close watch on the
Breen ship and the CEO's efforts to bring their
systems back online.
Rawyvin was the first to report on David's success.
"Shield are operational."
The FCO followed suits almost immediately after. "So
is full propulsion."
"Shields up! Helm get us out of here and back to
TOLAR IV. Let's hope that our Marines are having as
much luck as we are."
