"Breens And Luck Don't Mix"

Stardate: 60298.1458
Setting: Breen Frigate, Bridge
To the average person the whistles and clicks that filled the air were
a cacophony of noise that made no sense whatsoever. To the Breen
though, it was their language and what they were saying was nothing special.
The command crew of the Breen ship had not been surprised that the
Ferengi had been the first to leave. Those large eared traders valuing
their profits well above everything else, this made them overly
predictable. The Cardassians on the other hand were known to be as stubborn as they were arrogant, so again there had been no surprises when the Galor
class destroyer had not moved out of orbit. The Breen CO figured that
since there was no love lost between the two races, the Cardassians
would stand their ground for as long as possible. Although the frigate
was much smaller than the Destroyer, the Breens possessed enough Intel on
the Galor class ships to offset any size advantage their opponent might
have.
This left the Hirogens and the Orions. The Hirogens had kindly taken
care of the Orion problem, which of course left them to be dealt with by
the Breen. There had been a certain amount of surprise at the sight of
a Venatic class Tracker but the Breen CO did not believe that the
Hirogens would present any real problems. A single shot from their energy
dampening weapon would be sufficient to take care of them and the
Cardassians leaving the planet and its artefact wide open for the taking.
The Breen did not like surprises. Like their love for the cold, this
race enjoyed things to be unchanging, predictable, without surprises.
Things were meticulously planned and little if anything was left to
chance since chance could not be trusted to do anything expected. Maybe
that had been why the Breen and the Dominion had become allies so many
years ago. The two empires ran along very similar ways, that of order
through strength through which random occurrences were controlled or
denied.
The races and ships that had been found around TOLAR IV had not held
any surprises, as did the outcome that would result from the Breen's
arrival. The planet and its lost treasure would be theirs for the taking.
As well laid out as the plan had been though, the Breen had failed to
consider that luck was an integral part of the cosmos that followed a
will of its own. The frigate and its crew would soon be made aware of
this in a most permanent way.
The tonality and pitch of the whistles and clicks that formed the Breen
language suddenly changed. Reports from various stations came
barrelling in on the CO who tried to make sense of them all. The energy field
that they had been using had somehow become unstable creating a
feedback that threatened to destroy their ship. Nothing had been noticed on
their scanners that could explain why this had happened but worse had
been their inability to stop the chain reaction that had begun because of
it. One after the other the stations on the bridge exploded sending
members of the Breen crew flying through the frigid air until only the CO
remained. The noise created by their spoken language had stopped,
replaced by the crackling of blown consoles. There was nothing anyone
could do, something unexpected had happened and they would all be made to
pay the ultimate price for it. Maybe the element of chance should have
been considered in their planning but now it was too late.

Stardate: 10298.1459
Setting: Space, Cardassian ship orbiting TOLAR IV
Sensors said that something large had been heading this way, a Breen
Dragon Class Battleship. It was still too far to be seen through
enhanced visual means but everyone knew that it was there. The two Ferengi
ships and their crew had seen it and left, the Cardassians had also seen
it but had hoped that luck would be on their side. If they could find
the artefact before the battleship was within firing range, they would
be able to leave with what they had come to get.
The troops sent to the planet had not reported in yet and no one dared
to contact the ground troops for fear of tipping their hand to the
Breen. They had only one advantage and if luck was to be on their side it
would be all that they would need.
Cardassians did not really believe in such a thing as luck, but the
sudden disappearance of the Breen ship from their sensors made them
reconsider this. Instead of a heavily armed battleship, the sensors picked
up a large explosion that could be seen with the naked eye. The new star
that had been created had not lasted for that long but it herald a time
of renewed hope for the crew of the Galor Class destroyer. Whatever
had caused the battleship to be destroyed deserved to be thanked, after
they retrieved the Mind Stone from the icy grasp of the planet below.
