Setting: USS ANUBIS, Bridge
The young woman came out of her daydreaming when the call from the BARRACUDA came in. The ExO had been consumed with questions about her life-mate and the possible reasons that had lead her to let the Romulans and their ship leave… of course without any proofs that the ILO had been the one to do this, the redheaded woman had been left with nothing more than speculations. The report from Lt. Serenna made Rikar forget about both her professional and domestic problems as she concentrated on finding a way to assist the submerged specialized craft.
"All hands… take defensive measures. I realise that we are dealing with underwater animals, but I don’t want to take any chances… we have a nasty habit of getting surprised at the most inopportune of times." The CO ordered as he spun around his chair to meet the eyes of his bridge officers. James knew that the order he had just given would brand him as being slightly on the paranoid side but that had been a label that he had been more than willing to live with… if it meant that they would do just that… live.
"The sensors are barely registering the position of the BARRACUDA… and that it with them transmitting on multiple frequencies in addition to having their location beckon activated. I am estimating that the storm cell that has moved between us then them will clear out in about 20 or so minutes if all variants remain the same… and so far those variants have done nothing but change every couple of seconds." The CSciO reported from her station as she tried to use the ANUBIS' extensive sensor array to get a better idea of the situation the Ops officer and the rest of her team had fallen into.
"Could we use phasers to penetrate the storm and scare those fish away?" The CO inquired, not willing to give up so easy on rendering assistance to the team that had been sent to the O-Class planet.
"The energy contained in a phaser blast would likely be dispersed by the intensity of the electromagnetic turbulences… which also means that torpedoes are out of the question as they would be made to explode well before they reached their intended targets." Rawyvin announced from the Tactical station, not sounding overly thrilled with the idea that the ANUBIS, with all of its heavy duty armament, had not been in a position to help the BARRACUDA.
"What about the pulse cannons? We could position the ship to fire at the planet." The ExO countered with, her knowledge of the ANUBIS' weapon systems allowing her to know enough to consider the line-of-sight weapons affixed to the ship's Array section as a possible alternative.
"The energy pulse created by the pulse cannons is more powerful and focussed… it might work, but without the ability to precisely aim, there is a slight possibility that we would hit the BARRACUDA." The Sec/Tac officer pointed out, effectively discarding the ExO's suggestion since the idea had been to help the away team… not to risk sending them to an eternal watery grave.
"Maya… are the modifications to the deflector dish still in effect?" James inquired, his lips graced with a devious smile that seemed completely out of place on the CO's face.
"The modifications that were made in order to allow the ANUBIS to create a sonic pulse have not been undone due to lack of time. I am sure that fixing all that had to be changed was on Lt. Dawson's 'to do list' but I doubt that he had that much time to give to such a low priority job." The Shillian replied sounding as if she had been ready to continue on for hours with an endless string of irrelevant details.
"So we could use the main deflector to send another sonic pulse, this time directed at the general location of the BARRACUDA?" The CO quickly interrupted, not giving the CSciO the chance to continue, something that every other officer on the bridge had been most grateful for.
"Yes Sir… we could." Maya confirmed in as few words as she could having gotten the hint that she had once again fallen into her normal rambling routine.
"There are several advantages playing in our favour… the calibrating of the frequency will not need to be perfect and regardless of the amplitude we have to use, the BARRACUDA will not be negatively affected." The ExO stated as she scanned her instruments thinking that it had been a good thing for her to have reviewed what had happened on TOLAR IV while she had been pursuing Xan and the FOOL's GOLD onboard VIPER 1.
"Helm… turn the ship to face the planet. Number 1... Charge up the main deflector and fire when ready."
The young woman quickly went to work, assisted by both Rawyvin and Maya who both had already done this once before not so long ago. Within the span of a few heartbeats the ANUBIS had been repositioned and the deflector dish had been ready to be fired.
"Main deflector reading at 110% power capacity." Rawyvin stated as he glanced in the direction of the young woman standing immediately behind the CO's chair.
"Sonic modulation calibrated to have the highest possible effect on aquatic life. The crew of the BARRACUDA will not hear anything as the frequency is far beyond the range of normal humanoid hearing, but whatever fish are down there are going to think that the ocean is opening up all around them." Maya proudly announced, glad that she had spend several extra hours back at the Academy to research more in-depth the various types of alien aquatic life forms.
"I will settle for them leaving the BARRACUDA alone long enough for them to carry out their mission." The CO clarified before giving his ExO the go ahead with the firing sequence.
Moments later the main view screen displayed a strange wavy beam shoot towards the planet and pass through the raging storm as if it had never been there.
The member of the senior staff on the bridge waited with baited breath to see if what they had done had indeed worked, their inability to scan the planet's surface having made it impossible for the ANUBIS's staff to confirm first had if all had proceeded according to plan.
=/\= Serenna to ANUBIS… not sure what you did from up there but whatever it was, it worked. We are heading towards the shuttle that we detected. Will resume communication after contact had been made. BARRACUDA out. =/\= As filled with static as the signal from the Ops officer had been, the news of their success was received with great joy and celebration by those on the bridge.
With that hurdle out of their path, the young woman once again found herself thinking about the ILO and the Romulan situation that she seemed so heavily involved in.
