Setting: USS ANUBIS, Upper level of the "Black Hole"
Lea sat across the small round table with her dinner in front of her
still untouched. David sat opposite to the Assistant CMO, his attempts
to start a conversation having been met with silence. The former CEO of
the ANUBIS had thought that this would be a good idea, but now he
wondered. Lea had been reluctant in leaving Sickbay, even if it had been to
get some food before she passed out. As much as David found Lea's
dedication to her work annoying, he could not fault her for it because he
felt the same way towards engineering. The only difference at the
moment being that the Assistant CMO had something to occupy her thoughts
while he did not.
"I heard that the TANGIERS ORBITAL has negative gravity," David said
while looking at Lea. "Looks like we'll be walking on the ceilings while
we are there," the CEO grinned trying to get some sort of a reaction
from the Assistant CMO. When none came, David decided to up the ante.
"I hope you'll be giving us something for that or some of us might end
up sick."
"I'm sure you will be able to handle whatever situation comes your
way," Lea absent-mindedly said. It was easy to see that her attention had
not been with either her meal of her company. David felt hurt at first
but quickly got over it. As he sat opposite to the Assistant CMO the
CEO devised a plan to have some fun.
"Tell me," David said leaning over the table. "Do you think that the
negative gravity is going to cause any problems with our disguises? It
would be a shame if one of us lost a loosely glued ear or something
that would just float away."
"I'm sure you'll do just fine," Lea replied indicating to David that
she had not heard a single word that he had said.
"*Lea,*" David said forcefully having had enough of this. "If being
with me is that boring, let me know and I will leave." The CEO
immediately regretted saying what he had. Lea had never been the type to ignore anyone like this, so there had to be a good reason.
"I am so sorry David," Lea said as she looked into the eyes of the man
sitting across the table from her. "I have been lousy company. I just
can't stop thinking of Maya. Her condition has greatly improved and
stabilised but I am just worried that it might not last. Her immune
system seems to have a will of its own and energy to spare."
"Like her ability to talk," David chuckled back. "If the two are in
anyway related, I wouldn't worry too much about her. Maya is strong in
her own ways and I am sure that she'll pull through. Aside from that,
she has you looking over her like a hawk, so what could possibly
happen?"
Lea's cheeks began to glow red in response to the compliment David had
been so kind to give. It was true that the Shillian had a remarkable
metabolism, but Lea felt guilty for not having stayed by her side. If
something *did* happen, the Assistant CMO would never forgive herself.
"Mr. Brell, Miss Nanuska," Susan said as she approached the table.
Using the names of the characters that the two officers would be
portraying helped the Cns to 'get in character'.
"Who?" David answered. It took him only a few extra seconds to realise
what name the Cns had called him by. Of course looking at Susan and
seeing a Bajoran woman looking back had helped a lot. "Miss Niema if I
recall, what brings you here?"
"Just came to get something to eat and thought I would drop by and say
hi," Susan said. The truth of the matter had been that she had noticed
the look of distraction on Lea's face the moment the Cns had walked in.
Common sense had dictated that Susan just let it be since Lea had been
with David, but her professionalism had made her act to the contrary.
"Is everything all right? You look troubled," the Cns added looking at
Lea.
"She's just concerned for Maya," David said, replying for Lea who
appeared ready to leap out of her chair at any moment. "Seems that my
enchanting personality and charms are not enough to make her forget about
work," the CEO added."
"When was the last time *you* forgot about work?" Susan said to David
in a teasing manner. "Try not to think too much," Susan added as she
searched for a table to call her own. "On my end I hear a plate of
Bajoran delicacies calling my name," and with that the Cns left.
