The Shillian scientist followed the Talarian and
Bajoran as they left the poker table areas, trying as
best she could to not bring any unwanted attention to
her. Nothing had been said between the two undercover
operatives of the USS ANUBIS but a great deal had been
exchanged between the Chief Science Officer and Head
Counsellor when their eyes had met, enough to make
Susan feel safer in what she had been doing and
plentiful for the scientist to want to stay in the
vicinity of the officer portraying Niema Sol.
The idea of being there for the ensign had been so
strong that the Shillian woman had not given the
slightest thought about what she would have to do if
things got a little heated until after she had set out
to accompany the Bajoran wherever she went. Unlike
Marine Second Lieutenant Pravat, Lieutenant Commander
Serenna or even Lieutenant Commander Enaii for that
matter, the undercover scientist had never been one to
use physical means to solve problems, and
unfortunately that would exactly be what might be
required of the Chief Science Officer if what had
happened at the poker table was to be any sort of
indication. Scared that she might have to resort to
doing something that she was not really comfortable
with, the Shillian woman stayed as close to the
Talarian as she dared, more scared of what might
happen to Susan if the Counsellor remained alone with
the warrior.
This having been the first time the Shillian had tried
to shadow anyone, the scientist found the task to be
far more demanding than she could have ever imagined,
ranking her objective to keep within range of the
people she had been following along the same level as
trying to figure out the atomic weight of a constantly
changing isotope. The dynamics of the situation
changed with each passing moment as the crowd moved in
and out between them making the Cardassian scientist
re-evaluate her methods more frequently than she cared
for. It became clear that any attempt to predict the
destination of the Talarian had been useless and that
the scientist would have to be satisfied with
remaining far enough back to follow, but close enough
to be able to intervene should the need arise.
---
The last two minutes had felt like an eternity as the
Shillian woman continued to shadow the Talarian
Warrior and Bajoran widow, inwardly wishing that Enaii
had included some Intel training when the Intel
Liaison Officer had enlisted the aid of the scientist
in her elite department. The Cardassian knew that her
skills in the department of Intel had not been the
reason for her having been selected by Enaii for the
position, but their current mission and situation had
left the Shillin scientist with very little choice.
Just as the Shillian woman arrived on the fifth floor,
where the accommodations for the guests of the casino
could be found, a man emerged from the shadows and
slid behind Susan and Arten, a blunt type weapon held
firmly in his hand. Had the Enaran Marine been the
one shadowing the Counsellor, the assailant would have
likely been shot dead where he stood the moment he had
become visible. The Shillian woman could also imagine
that had the Chief of Operations been the one in her
place, the unknown man would have been stopped and
disarmed before anything had happened, and if
Lieutenant Commander Enaii had been the one here, all
of this would have happened without the Bajoran and
Talarian being the wiser of what had transpired.
Unfortunately none of those officers had been here,
and by the time the Shillian realised what had
happened, the Talarian laid unconscious on the
brightly coloured carpet.
The Cardassian scientist quickly debated as to what to
do and finally decided to simply hide in one of the
doorways and hope that the intentions of whoever the
unknown man were more benevolent than those of the
warrior he had so bluntly taken out of commission.
From several meters away, the Shillian scientist
watched and listened to the conversation between Matt
and Susan before the two of them continued down the
corridor leaving the unconscious Talarian behind along
with the instrument that had been used to place him in
that state. Somewhat reassured that Susan was in
lesser danger now than she had been before, the Chief
Science Officer took a moment to examine the immobile
form of the warrior with the hopes of gathering some
information on the man. The scientific approach of
the Cardassian did not appear all that much out of
place as she leaned next to the Talarian and committed
to memory certain specific details of the man, details
that she would be able to further analyse once she
returned to her quarters.
Before retreating from the area, the scientist reached
for the bottle that had been used to knock out the
warrior and very carefully placed it into a clear
plastic bag. The Shillian recognised the aroma coming
from the bottle as she placed the blunt weapon in the
bag before sealing it, this made her smile as the
scientist always thought that the Klingon drink had
been something of a hazardous substance.
As the Shillian scientist took the bottle back with
her, with the hopes of discovering more about both the
victim and assailant thanks to whatever biological
deposites had been left behind, the undercover Chief
Science Officer gave a quick glance down the corridor
while hoping that Ensign Mei was in good company.
