Setting: EARTH, Starfleet Academy, Just outside of the Tennis Court
Lt. Cmdr. J'Kall stood at the entrance of the tennis court, his arms
crossed over his massive chest… and his gaze locked on the grinning woman now
approaching him.
"Nice swing… and even better aim." The Klingon pointed out as the new
Ensign passed next to him playing with the blood-splattered ball that she had
retrieved from the playing area.
"It was an accident." Doratheva respectfully countered with although
she knew that it had been a straight out lie and that the smile on the
Klingon's lips made it clear that he already knew the truth.
"If you have a moment Ensign… I would like to speak with you… about a
possible assignment." J'Kall said which caused the half Edo, half
Betazoid woman to stop dead in her tracks. With a nod of her head and a smile
on her lips, Eva invited the must taller and larger officer to follow her away
from the tennis court and the eyes and ears of her husband.
"I have reviewed your final examination scores as well as your
performance during the last 4 years… your performance in the fields of Security and Intel are quite impressive." The Lt. Cmdr. announced as he produced a PADD from his belt and accessed the information it contained.
"I try my best." Eva stated, not at all certain as to where this
meeting was going to.
"If you had only *tried*… I wouldn't be here speaking to you. You
distinguished yourself during your final exams and that is why I am
making you this offer." J'Kall continued as he handed over another PADD to the
somewhat puzzled Ensign.
"What is this?" Eva inquired as she read the information contained on
the device… information which by itself seemed to make very little sense if
any.
"Boarding orders which authorize you to reach McKINLEY STATION and
board the USS NILE… a COMET Class transport that will take you to your new
assignment… if you choose to accept this offer." The Klingon cryptically explained leaving the Ensign with far more questions than answers.
The new Academy graduate glanced over the PADD to the officer who had
handed it to her with great scepticism reflecting in her eyes. Was this some
sort of a joke that Nolan had devised? As much as Evan wanted to believe
that this could be the explanation, the Edo/Betazoid woman could not bring
herself to accept that her husband could be smart enough to pull
something this extensive… regardless of how he might feel towards her.
"I don't understand." Eva said as her eyes bounced between the PADD in
her hands and the Klingon who had given it to her.
"There is nothing *to* understand… you have distinguished yourself as a
student of Intel and as such you are being given a unique opportunity.
The next step is up to you… you can either take this chance or wait for the
Chief of Operations to give you a *safer* assignment. If you chose the
latter, you will never hear of this again and will never know what
might have been." J'Kall said as only a Klingon could, making the offer sound
more like a dare… a challenge… one that only a true warrior would accept.
While debating what to make of all this, Eva lowered her eyes onto the
PADD once again, but this time when she raised them the Ensign found no one.
Either the Klingon had discovered a way to become invisible or she had
been speaking to a very convincing and tangible hologram. Whatever J'Kall
had been did not change the fact that the Edo/Betazoid Ensign now faced a
puzzling decision to make.
==========
The Ensign stood on the observation platform, looking through the thick
window before her onto the docking area where several ships were coming
and going… but none of them displayed the name of USS NILE. Eva had spent
the greater majority of the night before thinking about what she would do,
and now that she had decided to at least go to SPACE DOCK to see what the
ship was like she wondered if maybe it had been too late. J'Kall had never
mentioned a timeframe for her to take a decision, but taking into
account the vagueness of the information that she had been given made the
hybrid momentarily reconsider that this could have been a prank set-up by
Nolan. If it was, it had not been funny in the least.
"Ensign Doratheva… glad to see you decided to accept my offer." Eva
heard the familiar voice of the Klingon say, causing her to turn around to
confirm that the voice had belonged to Lt. Cmdr. J'Kall.
"Sir, I haven't accepted anything… yet." Evan countered with as she
tried to keep her temper in check… being dragged by the nose in this manner had not been amusing in any way shape of form.
"Does that mean that you would rather be back at the Academy and
waiting to see what kind of boring and run-of-the-mill assignment the Chief of
Operations has lined up for you?" The Klingon inquired, once again
making his words come across as a challenge that the recent graduate could not
ignore.
"No… Sir." Eva announced, but before she could wonder if her decision
had been some sort of mistake, she found herself being beamed off McKINLEY
STATION to parts unknown.
==========
"Welcome to the USS NILE Ensign Doratheva… I am Cmdr. Du'Kim." A
Cardassian man wearing a Starfleet uniform in the colours reserved for those in the field of Security or Oprations announced, inviting the disoriented
Ensign to step off the transporter platform.
"With all due respect Commander… is this some sort of a joke?" Eva
inquired, believing more than ever that Nolan could never have pulled something this elaborate even if he had months to plan for it.
"No joke… you have been selected for a very special assignment… onboard
an even more special vessel." The Cardassian explained as he handed over a
PADD to the Edo/Betazoid woman… a PADD that described a ship that the Ensign
had never heard of before… the USS ANUBIS.
