Setting: USS ANUBIS, Deck 12, Astrometrics Lab
All matter within the universe vibrates at a specific frequency unique to the dimensional and temporal identity of that plane of existence. If the particles found inside electrons, protons and neutrons, which are the building blocks of any given object, are made to vibrate at a different frequency than that set by the universe the object can be made to vanish from this reality.
The Shillian scientist had been reviewing some of the concepts surrounding the quantum vibration of all matter after she had exhausted all possibilities to explain the sub-space distortion the sensors of the MERCURY had reported before the ship and crew were lost. At first the Chief Science Officer had thought that the bending of sub-space had been caused by some sort of new Romulan cloaking device, but the scientist had quickly dismissed that possibility. The problem with altering the natural vibration of atoms was that unless it was extremely well controlled, there existed a risk that the matter being affect would just vanish into nothingness. The only way to avoid such a disastrous fate would have been to know the exact vibrating frequency of another universe, but this would only permit the object to travel from one dimension to another and not just hide it from the sensors of the MERCURY.
The entire night had been spent reviewing the data gathered by the sensors and which had been sent with the emergency buoy, unfortunately this meant that there had been a lot of information missing which had made the task of figuring out what had happened that much more complicated for the Shillian scientist.
Although fatigue had claimed the body of the scientist sometime well after midnight, the mind of the Chief Science Officer had not stopped trying to make sense of what the MERCURY had detected before the abduction of its crew and its subsequent destruction. The clues to solving this puzzle were somewhere buried in the data that had been looked at from every possible angles, and the Shillian woman had not been ready to give up as this would give them a head start in locating and rushing to the rescue of the missing crew.
So deeply lost in her dreams of dimensional vibrations, atoms and the application of countless theories and scientific facts to them that the Shillian had not heard the hissing of the doors as they opened and closed. Since the Chief Science Officer had been alone in the Astrometrics Lab, the unacknowledged sound could only indicate that someone had come in, but the scientist did not budged from her uncomfortable position, sprawled over the research console.
"You know, there is a reason why everyone has quarters onboard the ship," Captain Rikar softly said, gently taking hold of the Shillian by the shoulder to make sure she would not fall off her chair when she woke up.
"Captain?" The Chief Science Officer replied while looking around the room in a way that hinted that she had not expected to fall asleep. "I'm sorry, I was working on trying to figure out the significance of the sub-space distortion recorded by the sensors of the MERCURY and I must have fallen, I mean I am sorry that I feel asleep and not that I was working on solving that mystery which I am no closer to deciphering then when I started. As detailed as the information provided to us may be, it is simply insufficient to get any sort of concrete theory going as to what caused the disturbance and if it is even related to the destruction of the MERCURY. For all we know the sensors might have just picked up a natural phenomenon that had nothing to do with the sequence of event that followed."
"You know something," the Commanding Officer of the USS ANUBIS said through a partial grin, "no one, not even you, should be thinking so much so early in the morning. What I think you need is a break, and maybe a little food, my treat."
The Chief Science Officer thought of the offer for a moment before realising that refusing the offer of a Captain, as friendly as it may have sounded, would not have been a wise decision, so the Shillian accepted although with some visible reservation. As much as her body would be grateful to be in a more comfortable position and absorb some well needed nourishment, the scientist could not stop thinking about the problem that she had dreamt of for the majority of the previous night.
"Come on Maya," the Commanding Officer said with a certain level of authority, "whatever is in there will still be there when we come back, and you will be unable to do anything about it if you end up in Sickbay because of exhaustion."
Faced with the option to stay and work or go against the recommendations of her Captain, the Shillian scientist gave in and accepted while thinking that the Commanding Officer had an unfair advantage having been a Counsellor *and* Chief Science Officer prior to her having become the senior most officer on board the ANUBIS.
