Lea blinked. What had happened to Enaii? More important why was Maya blaming herself for it? The CMO waited to see how Sabrina would reply to what Pravat had said but the CO remained silent. If Lea had been a Betazoid she would have picked up on Sabrina's thoughts. That would have made things easier for everyone, but that had not been the case. After the way Talia had reacted to the news Sabrina had been reluctant to tell Lea. Not that the CO had expected the CMO to lash out at her and bite her other arm.
"This may sound a little strange," Lea said, "but would someone mind telling me what happened to Enaii?"
Pravat looked at Sabrina as if questioning how come Lea had not been made aware of the ILO's fate. After that the MCO glared for a very brief moment at Lea wondering how she could have not heard about it. By now the story of Enaii's passing had been on everyone's lips. Well almost everyone since Lea obviously did not know.
"I will take care of it," Sabrina said to Pravat. Understanding that this had been her way to dismiss him, the Marine retreated back to the corridor. Now alone with Lea, Sabrina turned to face the CMO.
"She died didn't she?" Lea said. The CMO had not picked up on the hesitation of her friend, but now it could not have been clearer. Susan had tried to tell Lea about this more than once. Each time something else had happened to divert the CNS from her objective. There could not be any other explanation. Why else would Talia have bitten her adoptive mothers? Why else would Maya be blaming herself? Why else would Susan have tried to speak to her without having been able to get the words out?
"Yes," Sabrina replied. Whatever pain Sabrina felt had been held in check, at least for the time being. The way she had confirmed the new had been like any other CO. Not like a woman who had just lost her companion and the mother of their child.
"I'm so sorry," Lea said. The crew of the ANUBIS had become her family and the CMO had so wanted to be able to do more. Since time travel had not been an option, the only thing Lea could do was to offer her sympathies. Of course in time one question began to form in Lea's mind. Was Enaii's death in anyway related to the fact that Lea had been captured, again? The odds had not been good but that brought up another matter. Why was Maya blaming herself if it had been Lea's fault, even if only partially. The CMO had a valid excuse having been the one captured, but Maya had been on the ship.
"Maybe I should go and speak to Maya," Sabrina said. The fact that her arm no longer displayed any sign of the attack had not seemed to matter. As the ship's CO Sabrina saw it as her duty to speak to Maya and clarify the situation. Although Lea agreed with that assessment the CMO also saw an opportunity to learn more about what had happened.
"This is already difficult enough for you," Lea said. The job that Lea was about to volunteer for was not going to be an easy one. Getting a word in edgewise whit Maya would prove to be a challenge by itself. Trying to figure out what had happened above this would be even more difficult. That said though Lea had made up her mind, if only to make sure that she had not been the cause of Enaii's demise. "Let me go and speak to Maya. If I run into problems I can always call upon Susan. I am sure that Maya will be more receptive to speaking to an impartial third party. Not that I believe that she would not be willing to talk to you."
"Thank you," Sabrina said adding a nod of her head. "Let me know how it went."
