Several centuries ago, back on EARTH, a great scientific debate had errupted about the true nature of *light*. Although this seemed to be an easily solved problem at first, those struggling to make sense of the science behind the way photons acted and reacted soon found out that this was a much more complex phenomenon than first expected. You see the scientist of the time had discovered that light was neither a wave or a particle although it exhibited characteristics of both, and because photons could not be labelled as being one or the other, several problems surfaced in the search for a better understanding of this primordial substance.

The Shillian Scientist had been looking at some of the data provided by Ensign Mei and Ensign Summers in regards to Lieutenant Dawson, each officer having supplied information respective to their particular field of expertise and based on their personal theories of what SDS was. Very much like the scientists of old who had offered conflicting theories about light, the Chief Medical Officer and Head Counsellor had found themselves to be on opposite sides of the issue of describing this unorthodox syndrome.

Based on the research that Doctor Summers had been using, which had been supported by many facts brought to the group my the Shillian herself, The Chief Medical Officer had been working on the basis that SDS was a medical condition requiring a medical solution. On the other hand, Ensign Mei who had presented a new theory that suggested that SDS was in fact a psychological effect, had found her suspicions supported by some of the information the sisters of the deceased Intelligence Liaison Officer had offered.

As welcomed as their assistance had been, the Shillian scientist soon discovered that the information provided by Jaycee and En had only deepened the chasm that separated the two sides of the issue by presenting data that supported both sides of the question: was SDS a physical or psychological disorder?

The idiosyncrasies of the two sisters had not helped matters, giving the Head Counsellor, chief Medical Officer and Chief Science Officer only more unanswered questions about the already enigmatic background of the Intelligence Operative. Had the two issues, that of the court-martial of Lieutenant Dawson and the death of Lieutenant Commander Enaii, not been related to one another the atmosphere within the Bio Chemistry Lab might have been more suitable to the research being conducted, but the presence of the two sisters had only added to the uncertainty factor. That Jaycee displayed visible signed of discomfort and paranoia, and that En had refuse to step out of the darkness behind which she had been since the start had only made things that much more difficult for everyone.

"There is a 78.3 percent chance that the bio-electrical patterns of the two entities could be made incompatible if the target is exposed to a burst of gamma rays for a duration of eight seconds," Jaycee said. Since they had started working together, the woman who had resembled Lieutenant Commander like a twin had proven to be an entirely different person by her demeanour which seemed to become more erratic and complicated with each passing minute. At first Jaycee had refused any physical contact with all three of the officers who had been called to the lab, but as time passed the sister of Lieutenant Commadner Enaii had extended this restriction on any and all physical contact to include everything that any of the other three women had touched, even if only for a split second. This of course greatly reduced the ability of the group to share information forcing all PADDs to be transferred in a unidirectional manner while new PADDs were being provided from the darkness by the unseen sister. After an hour of work, this had resulted in a phenomenal number of PADDs being stacked on every corner of the work stations currently occupied by the Chief Science Officer and Chief Medcial Officer.

"A gamma burst of that magnitude would result in the DNA of the *target*, who by the way is called David Dawson, to be turned into jelly," Doctor Summers blasted in response to the last suggestion made by Jaycee. "We are trying to save him, not have him be able to get from one deck to another by oozing through the deck plates."

"That is not an accurate observation," En said from behind the cloak of darkness after the sister flicked her wrists the preset number of times her subconscious mind had required her to. "Only a burst of nine or more seconds would result in the breakdown of the amino acids comprising the DNA of the subject in question. At exactly eight second, the DNA of Lieutenant D-A-W-S-O-N would not be affected although he might suffer from minor radiation poisoning, a condition that would be easily rectified with the proper medication."

"Maybe so," the Chief Science Officer said finding the dispassionate attitude of the two sisters increasingly more difficult to manage, "but that treatment is based on the basis of SDS being a physical affliction and not a psychological one. I mean we do have a great deal of facts supporting that theory but ensign Mei did make several good points, all of which have also been collaborated by data gathered during her sessions with Lieutenant Dawson and further confirmed by medical scans performed by Doctor Summers. It would be unwise for us to attempt any sort of treatment without first being absolutely certain of the type of affliction we are dealing with. I mean would any of us be willing to try to cure a case of the flu with a Tri-Cortisone compound without first knowing for certain that the flu is either Tholian or Cardassian in origin?"

"The method suggested would not be effective against either types of flu you have mentioned," Jaycee replied looking a little puzzled by the comment made by the Shillian scientist, "but given the data available on this SDS, it does have a high percentage of success regardless of the specific nature of the syndrome as it would target the affected parts of the subject."

"Maybe we should just put David in an airlock and flush the air out!" The Chief Medical Officer said sarcastically and out of total frustration, their research not having moved ahead anywhere as much as any of them had hoped or wanted.

Everyone stopped what they had been doing, the Head Counsellor and Chief Science Officer looking at the Doctor as if she had been mad, while Jaycee looked at the Doctor as if she had stubble onto something worth investigating.
