The Vulcan Ensign sat at the FCO position of the HATHOR while his new
roommate sat in the Captains chair.
"That was not too bad Derek, but remember there is a .03 delay between the
port and starboard thrusters. Engineering is trying to find the problem but
until they do you will have to adjust when using them."
Stormwind spun his chair to face the new Sec/Tac. "I see the differences
you mentioned Ensign Uxtar, she really is different in her handling than
most ships I have piloted. Thank you for showing me this before my first
duty shift."
"Ok, I need to get some sleep why don’t you stay and get familiar with the
rest of the ships systems."
The Hirogen rose and went toward the turbolift… "Computer Exit."
The HATHOR’s new FCO watched the Ensign leave and than turned back to the
flight controls.
**Lets see what this ship can really do,** ran through his mind.
"Computer… add Bridge crew and commence battle simulation Stormwind
delta-09."
For the next twenty minutes the human half-breed followed all standard
Starfleet protocols and battle regulations. Flying basic evasive manoeuvres
and standard attack plans. The ship handled them all as she was designed to
responding to even the slightest command quickly and efficiently. But that
did not really satisfy him. Knowing that he would never be allowed to use
any of his tactical flight manoeuvres with the real HATHOR he decided that
now was a good time to see if this ship could handle the stresses of his
manoeuvres. Derek was so involved with his preparations and simulation he
did not notice when the red-headed woman walked in and sat in the Captains
chair.
"Computer restart Stormwind delta-09"
=/\= Red alert, man your battle stations! =/\=
The main view screen showed three Breen fast attack vessels in pursuit of
the HATHOR . The ship was at warp 1 and it was not normally recommended to
do battle at warp speeds due to sheer forces. But the Ensign did not quite
think normal.
Increasing speed to warp 2 the ship began to pull away, but of course the
Breen adjusted and began to catch up. Derek kept his eye on the relative
closing speed and just as they fire their first shots, he pitched up the
ships nose and dropped to warp 1. This effectively brought the ships speed
to high impulse without dropping out of warp. Bringing the ships nose back
down he went to warp 1.9. What this did was to let the Breen fly past and
give the HATHOR’s main batteries a perfect shot.
The result was one Breen destroyed one heavily damaged. Which spoke well not
only for ships weapons' design but the crew who manned them.
The half Vulcan followed the undamaged Breen ship. It twisted and turned
trying to lose him but he held on until the Breen brought him back around
into the sights of the other ship. Derek had to bank away which lost him the
other vessel. The aft weapons systems took out the damaged Breen. But it
also allowed the last ship to once again get behind the HATHOR.
Derek increased to warp 4 which placed distance between the two ships. But
he didn’t stop there he pulled the nose of the ship up sharply and at the
same time spun the ship on its axis. The ship was now flying nose high at
warp 2.5 backwards. The stress indicators were pegged the ship was
shuddering as if about to break apart. Bringing the nose back down he
increased speed to warp 3.5 having effectively turned 180 degrees without
changing direction of flight. The forward batteries were only a second
behind the Breen in realizing what had happened … The Breen turned away from
the collision course but not in time to avoid the full forward firepower of
the USS HATHOR.
"Computer battle damage assessment"
=/\= Ship has sustained minor damage, Inertial dampers at 40%, Shields at
60%, Stress fractures in forward hull plating. Crew injuries… minimal. =/\=
Listening intently the acting FCO did not notice the look on the face of the
woman in the Captains Chair , nor did he notice her leave.
Derek stood… "Computer end program."

Derek’s emotions were in full scream. He was on the way to his first shift
as the HATHOR’s FCO. His human half was alternating between apprehension and nerves. The ship was new but the crew had been together for some time. His mind was reminding him what it had been like when he was young and been new to place… how he was treated.
Well his mother had always said the "Great Spirit" would always be with him
and guide him. But his father, always the true Vulcan, spoke only of logic
and its ability to break any situation down into its easily handled
component parts. For this time and place for once his father was right.
The doors opened onto the bridge and he stepped in. His senses picked up the
curiosity, and the suspicion from those who glanced up at him. The one
feeling he sensed he did not comprehend was one of disgust. As he glanced
around the bridge his eyes stopped on the redheaded woman standing next to
the CO. The look in her eyes said it all, his mind wondered what he had done
to earn this type of feeling. He allowed the Vulcan half of his mind to push
the human half down. Logic dictated that he simply begin now to earn the
trust of all on board.
He walked slowly to the empty FCO station and disengaged the automated
piloting systems, sighin to himself the line that he had rehearsed for
whoever would and should have been sitting there. "I relieve you sir."
