Thanks to the work done by the Oltharian Chief
Engineering Officer the computer of the USS ANUBIS
through the supervision of the Avatar had been able to
reach out, reprogram and take control of the hundred
or so orbital defence platforms which had been place
around SURIAL III. These Satellites had initially
been designed to destroy so it had been with a great
deal of irony that the devices had been turned into
tools to help save a single life, that of Lieutenant
Commander Enaii, mother to the young Talia,
Intelligence Liaison Officer to the ANUBIS and wife to
Captain Rikar, Commanding Officer of the same ship.
Time being a commodity they had in very short supply
the Shillian scientist had forgotten for the time
being her exaltation to the simplistic solution
provided by Lieutenant Fairborn and her subsequent
emotional display which had left both her and the
Marine First Lieutenant at a loss for words. The
expression on the face of the Enaran man pointed to a
pleasant surprise, or at least that had been what the
Shillian woman had hope it had been at the time. The
two of them would have to find some time to talk about
the significance of the kiss they had shared once this
mission had been completed, hopefully successfully.
Because of the tremendous stress the control of the
orbital defence platforms had placed on the computer
and Avatar, everyone had been forced to work as fast
as possible in order to make full usage of the
opportunity they had been given. Failure at this time
would set back the ANUBIS and its crew hours if not
days, making the success of their mission even less
likely than it had been. At least now, with the use
of the satellites orbiting the planet, they were able
to scan all of the ionized atmosphere in a single
sweep and try to lock on the particles which at an
earlier point in time had constituted the body and
soul of Lieutenant Commander Enaii.
"The HATHOR has moved off to investigate the sensor
void which has appeared on our long-range sensors,"
the Enaran Marine who had taken on the role of Chief
of Security for the time being reported from the
tactical station. While almost everyone else had been
busy with the atmosphere of SURIAL III Pravat had
taken on the task to insure that the ANUBIS and its
crew remained safe, a task that had not been overly
easy given that the majority of the resources on the
ship had been diverted to the retrieval of the
Intelligence Liaison Officer.
"Keep a communications channel open for them," the
crimson haired Commanding Officer said, barely taking
the time to look at the Eneran. At that moment the
attention and focus of Captain Rikar had instead been
solely directed onto Annie the Avatar who had taken on
the role of *interface* between the ANUBIS and the
orbital defence platforms. "Status?" the Captain
asked of the artificial woman who appeared to be
dealing with an unimaginable amount of work and
information judging by the way her head tilted from
side to side.
"Had to sever connection with three satellites which
were not responding fast enough," the Avatar replied
with difficulty, "all others are responding and have
begun scanning the atmosphere of the planet.
Preliminary data should be available now."
Right on cue the data collected by all of the defence
satellites in orbit of the planet began to appear on
the consol of the Chief Science Officer and Chief
Engineering Officer, the volume of the information
having been simply too large to be contained and
processed by a single station. The Chief Science
Officer immediately began to identify the energy
pattern which in theory belonged to Lieutenant
Commander Enaii so as to have the transporter system
attempt a reconstitution. With the assistance of the
Oltharian engineer, the Shillian scientist had been
able to perform the task in a matter of seconds, but
the result of their frantic work proved to be much
less than she science officer had expected.
"Is there a problem?" Captain Rikar demanded
forcefully not at all finding the expression on the
face of her acting Executive Officer encouraging.
"I am not certain captain," the Shillian scientist
replied before looking up at the Avatar. "Annie, can
you increase the gain of the sensors on the orbital
defence platforms?"
"The gain is already at one hundred percent," the
artificial woman replied showing even more difficulty
than she had previously. "I will try to increase it,
but be ready this may lead me to end this link fast."
"Maya!" the Commanding Officer said moving away from
the command pit and towards the back of the Bridge
where the science and engineering stations had been
located. "What is happening?"
With the Chief Science Officer busy with the new set
of data being provided by the modified satellites, the
Oltharian Chief Engineer verbally stepped forward and
tried to explain the situation as best he could based
on what he had so far observed. "According to the
data we have received from the orbital defence
platforms, we have been able to locate only a fraction
of the energy pattern which would normally constitute
a living entity such as Lieutenant Commander Enaii. I
am sorry, but we might be too late," Lieutenant
Fairborn explained, his voice heavy with sadness and
sorrow for the woman they had lost had not only been a
fellow shipmate but also a friend of sorts to him.
"NO!" the Captain bellowed turning around to face the
Avatar sitting at the helm of her ship. "Annie, this
is a level one command priority, use whatever means at
your disposal to get a complete pattern lock."
Before anyone could comment or even argue with the
order given by the Commanding Officer of the USS
ANUBIS, the lights on the bridge flickered which was
immediately followed by a less than happy report from
the Enaran Marine standing behind the tactical
station. "Life support systems on decks 15 through
20, and decks 24 through 29 have been terminated,
initiating emergency evacuation protocol. All
defensive systems including shields and long-range
sensors have been rendered inoperative, we are blind
and defenceless," the Enaran said barely managing to
contain his disagreement with this course of action
from his tone of voice.
"What ever Annie did appears to be working," the
Oltharian Chief Engineering Officer said looking down
at his instruments, "we are showing a distinct
increase in the located amount of energy pattern, but
we are still far from having enough to even think of
attempting a beaming."
"Some of the energy pattern had dissipated beyond the
ability of the sensors to lock onto," the Shillian
scientist added as she continued her frantic attempts
to see this mission end successfully. "I am trying to
modify the weapons of the orbital defence platforms so
that they can fire a harmonic subspace blast which
will perfectly match the inversed frequency of the
energy pattern of Lieutenant Commander Enaii, there is
no way to know if this will work but we have no other
choice, I mean at this rate I estimate that Annie will
either suffer a complete system shutdown in less than
a minute or the pattern is simply beyond retrieval,
either way we have next to nothing to lose. In
theory, at least the one that I have not had the
chance to even test with the computer, an inverted
harmonic subspace frequency should attract the energy
pattern of Lieutenant Commander Enaii like two
opposite poles of a magnet attract each other, or
course there is always the possibility that a subspace
blast like this might cause the entire atmosphere of
SURIAL III to depolarize which would sent it out into
open space at which time we will have no other chance
for any other plan to work."
"Reading a massive charge building in all of the
satellites," the Enaran announced before glancing back
at the Shillian woman while silently hoping that she
had been right with her *theory*.
"Captain, the subspace shockwave created by the
satellites will impact the planet and be reflected
back out into space," the Oltharian Engineer said
foreseeing a problem that the Chief Science Officer
had not had the time to consider in her rapid work to
find a solution to their problem.
"All hands," the Commanding Officer said as she opened
a ship-wide channel, "brace for impact. All emergency
teams stand-by to respond to the outer sections as
shields and defensive systems are inoperative."
"The orbital defence platforms are firing!" The Enaran
Marine said, holding on to the edges of his station
bracing himself as the Captain had ordered.
---
To see a single satellite fire the subspace harmonic
blast had been an impressive sight, but to have over a
hundred of these machines do the same thing all at the
same time had been nothing short of breathtakingly
spectacular. The sparkling silver hue energy wave
traveled at unimaginable speeds through the atmosphere
of the planet making it glow before impacting against
the planet and passing through the atmosphere once
again before venture into the emptiness of space
pushing aside anything and everything that had been in
its path, including the USS ANUBIS.
Although the defensives systems of the ship had not
been operational, the ablative armour which had been
extended since their entrance into Cardassian space
proven to be quite effective in keeping the ship in a
single piece despite the ship being violently pushed
as the reflected shockwave passed them.
---
"Report!" the Captain demanded from the floor of her
bridge, the force of the impact having been more than
enough to send her and almost everyone else flying
several meters from where they had been standing.
"Ablative armour protected the outer hull," the Chief
of Security reported, "no hull breaches have been
detected."
"The sensors of the orbital defence platforms are
showing a seventy-eight percent pattern lock," the
Oltharian Engineer said before looking down at his
instruments and confirming the second part of his
report, "and increasing. Now showing an eighty-three
percent lock."
"Well done!" the Commanding Officer beamed unable to
contain her joy at the news.
"Although we are showing an increase in energy pattern
matching that of Lieutenant Commander Enaii, we are
still far from being able to attempt a beaming," the
Shillian scientist pointed out. "We will need to have
one hundred percent of the pattern locked in if this
has any chance of success, and right now we are still
only reading an eight-seven percent lock."
As the Captain looked over to the Avatar the crimson
haired woman suddenly understanding that this would
now be nothing more than a race between the sensors of
the orbital defence platforms to lock onto all of the
energy pattern and the ability of Annie to keep
control of them as her own systems began to fail.
