The young woman stood in the middle of the nearly empty bridge… her eyes fixated on the immobile stars which were displayed on the main view screen. In order to give the DRAGONSEYE and its two-officer crew enough of a lead the ANUBIS had been forced to take things *easy* and hide in the gravitational disturbance of a nearby Class-4 pulsar.
Although several light-years separated the two ships the ANUBIS would only be minutes behind the undercover team of Lt. Cmdr. Maya and Ens. Stormwind at maximum warp, a fact that had played heavily in the CO's final decision to bring her ship to a complete stop. Another aspect that had tipped the balance in favour of having the Intel vessel render itself immobile and invisible had been to use the IGC's long-range sensors to scrutinize the IRRAJ system and carefully log the types of ships coming and going from that world. It had been hoped that identifying the trading vessels could help in assessing the probability of their being an enemy presence on the planet even before the ANUBIS arrived in orbit and its away team sent down to the royal palace.
"You really should get some rest," the voice of the half Human, half Romulan woman who held the position of Executive Officer onboard the ANUBIS was heard saying, the woman in question having joined the CO on the Bridge.
"Talia is sleeping and I just didn't want to wake her up with my incessant pacing, so I figured that being here was a better alternative," the
young woman replied, a gentle and sleepy grin having appeared on her pink
lips as she turned to welcome the ExO.
"You left your daughter alone in your quarters again?" the hybrid inquired knowing that the last crew status report had placed the child's other
mother in the ship's IGC. Although the half Human and half Vulcan woman knew
that this had been common practice for Talia, the ExO could not help but
feel sorry for the young child who seemed to spend the greater majority of
her time without either of her parents for one reason or another.
"You know as well as I that she is not *alone*, first floater is watching over her, and second Talia is probably more capable of taking care of herself than anyone of us," the redheaded woman stated in a mixture of pride and concern about her adoptive daughter. Yes it had been true that Talia had already displayed skills and a level of independence which far exceeded her age, and through these the young woman had grown to fear the Intel Operative the child would grow up to become.
"I also know that a child, even one as resourceful as Talia, needs to
*feel* the presence of her parents, even when asleep," the ANUBIS' ExO offered
as she walked up to stand right next to the CO, both of their gazes locked
on the starscape displayed on the main view screen. Several times before
Serenna had wanted to speak to Sabrina about this particular subject…
but never had the hybrid found the time and place appropriate… until now.
"You better be careful Serenna… speaking of *feelings* like that might
give the impression that you are not the cold and calculating *unfeeling*
First Officer that you have worked so hard to portray yourself to be," the CO
half teased in a whispered voice.
"Even Vulcans have emotions, they have just learned to hide them, as I
do… as far as my being cold and calculating though I will simply say that
it has served me and this crew well in the past. Now shall I ask for Doctor
Summers and Ens. Mei to report to the Bridge and perform a complete
medical and psychological examination on you?" the half Human, half Romulan
hybrid asked without as much as a grin having graced her lips.
"Trying to have me declared unfit for command and relieved of duty?"
the redheaded woman asked, sure that the threat uttered by her First
Officer had been an empty one and not the true intent of her ExO.
"Maybe not relieved of duty… but at least have the good Doctor order
you to rest. Worst case scenario would be that she would have you report to
Sickbay where you would at least lay down on a biobed for an hour or so
while they performed all of their tests. Either way you would be off
your feet," Serenna pointed out in a way that had almost made the hybrid
sound purebred Romulan.
"Cold… calculating… *and* devious. Have I ever mentioned to you that I
am happy that you are on *our* side?" The young woman playfully inquired
knowing all too well that she had found herself to be on the wrong end
of their quiet discussion.
"Does that mean I will not have to wake the good Doctor or our Chief
Counsellor?" the ExO countered with obviously not wanting the
discussion to be diverted onto any other subject.
"You win…" Rikar acquiesced as she threw her arms in the air as a sing
of surrender before she turned around and made her way to the back of the
bridge and the turbolift which had been there waiting for her further
proving that the ExO had planned this little exchange to the very last.
The ExO waited for the doors to the turbolift to close and confirm that
the redheaded woman in command of the ANUBIS had been on her way before the
hybrid made her way to her station. Once there Serenna opened a
secured channel to the IGC and relayed a simple three-word message. 'You owe
me'.
