The ANUBIS's FCO had arrived almost unnoticed on the bridge. As he headed for his station he heard Pravat say to the unknown ensign with him.
"That taciturn Vulcan that just passed is our FCO Ensign Stormwind." In a softer voice, the Marine added "If you value your sanity and your life, when you see him, and Uxtar drinking together… run!"
Derek turned slowly going to full Vulcan mode with a raised eyebrow, "Ah yes. How are your marines fairing, having failed to subdue two inebriated aliens even when they out numbered them at 4 to 1?"
Pravat visibly choked, but Ensign Thomas stepped in quickly offering his hand, "Hello I'm the new Operations Officer."
The half Vulcan took the proffered hand, "Welcome aboard the ANUBIS Ensign, I am sure that your stay will be memorable."
Elliot glanced around at the crew on the bridge and wondered what he had let himself in for with this assignment.
Derek went to the FCO station and brought all his boards up on line. He was still amazed at the time recently spent on the hanger deck with the big robotics' engineer. After showing Lieutenant Fairborn his plan for changing and upgrading the flight control systems on the DRAGONSEYE. The Oltharian had not only grasped quickly the idea and intent, he had added a few touches that not even the Vulcan could have thought of. Together they had increased the abilities of the AI to react faster to control impulses but Fairborn had added a remote control ability that would allow the DRAGONSEYE to be flown from the FCO position with no one aboard, and the tall Vulcan was itching to test it.
Turning to his friend the SEC/TAC Derek acted in a totally official manner. "Ensign Uxtar may I see you for a moment?"
Uxtar turned to look at the Vulcan surprised at the official sound in his voice. He walked over to the FCO station. "What is it Ensign?"
"I thought you might enjoy this," The half human answered.
Derek activated the main view screen and had it show the outside of the hanger deck as it opened. The DRAGONSEYE slowly flew from the opening into open space. The ship did a barrel roll than spun 180 degrees until it was facing the ANUBIS and came to a stop dead astern.
Smiling at his friend and in a total deadpan Derek asked "Would you care to try and hit it with your up graded targeting sensors?" The FCO knew that Uxtar had been troubled ever since their first meeting on the USS HATHOR because he could not target the DRAGONSEYE even though he could see it. That was what part of his upgrades had been all about.
Uxtar looked down at his friend, "AH a challenge…loser buys." Going quickly to his own console he turned to his Vulcan drinking buddy… "Let the hunt begin."
For the next 20 minutes the two sparred, Derek turning on and off the Sensor Dispersion field and jinking all around the ANUBIS. While Uxtar attempted to tag him with the targeting sensors. Derek pulled a hard loop to come in once again behind the ANUBIS and his Hirogen friend predicted the maneuver except that the FCO full stopped before completion of the loop, unfortunately Uxtar fired anyway… the targeting sensors missed the DRAGONSEYE… but did not miss the incoming Admirals Gig.
Reacting quickly and in unison the two friends quickly shut down most of their stations and Derek eased the DRAGONSEYE back into the hanger deck. It was lucky for them that targeting sensors were pretty generic, because the Captain of the Gig was screaming on all channels to find out who had the temerity to use his ship for target practice.
Derek turned slowly to his hunter friend and in total deadpan said "I believe that would be scored as a tie…"
Not to be out done by his Vulcan friend, Uxtar calmly stated… "Agreed… I believe we should discuss our results… say… in the Blackhole… now!"
Derek just nodded and the two left the bridge quickly.
