IMAGE ENTERTAINMENT – ID680SRDVD
STATS
Widescreen (2.35:1) Enhanced for 16:9 TVs, Color, MONO, Languages: English, Chapters: 20, Running Time:129 mins., Rated PG, Price: $24.99

VISUAL
After a somewhat marred opening main title sequence the condition of the elements improve. Color remains constant in saturation and hue throughout, as does contrast values. The overall quality is quite good with good digital authoring as well. The anamorphic image has both detail, and depth in range, and tonal representation showcasing some beautiful shots of sea and sky.
AUDIO
The MONO (Center channel) is just serviceable with no special presence. The tone is somewhat weak, even in the music, lacking mid-bass and no lower bass frequencies. This in not a flaw in mastering or authoring.

PRESENTATION
The single Menu that is both Main /Scene Selections is a bit low key for current DVDs, and is more akin to earlier, simpler releases. The cover artwork (based on the original theatrical concept) is nice on the plastic Amaray but offers little in terms of representing the film properly.

SIGHTS AND INSIGHTS
This would fair better if presented with a new cover artwork that promoted the gritty survival aspects rather than a circling whirlpool . Based on a Jules Verne tale the film is less adventure and more “THE HILLS HAVE EYES/DEATH WISH” sea based thriller. The explicit (especially for its day) killings and somewhat brutal nature of the “hostile” take over rings truer to today’s audience whom have been weaned on thrillers as this.
NOTE:
For more on this title be sure to check out a coming interview with the film’s producer (SUPERMAN I, II, III, SUPERGIRL, SANTA CLAUS: THE MOVIE) Ilya Salkind.
