Bio | ||||||||||||||||||
Diva D! was born and raised in Ontario for most of her life, although as a young child in the early 70's she did spend 3 years in Moncton NB. She has lived in Toronto, Brampton and London Ontario and currently lives in good old Halifax Nova Scotia Canada. In the early 90's she moved to downtown Toronto and started going out to the clubs....mostly Club Colby's (which is no longer around :( ) It was Club Colby's where she first saw her insperations to go out and perform on stage - Pepsi, Michelle Ross, Chris Edwards, Danny Love, Dale Barnett, Candice, Christopher Peterson. Although she had been doing drag off and on for a couple of years - but mostly for halloween and for friends parties. Her boyfriend Frank when she was 18 suggested she do drag one night and she went out and bought some make up and Frank did her up! At the age of 19 while working for Xtra magazine (in 1987) she met one of Toronto's most well known Drag Queens - Rusty Ryan. While pouring a drink for Rusty at an office party Xtra was throwing, Rusty asked if she had ever done drag. Diva shook her head no, "Well you remind me of Divine sweetie and I think you would make a great Drag Queen! You have an ageless face like good old Divine does." Diva thanked Rusty who then told her if she ever wanted to be put in face to give her a call. Diva never called Rusty, but they met up again shortly after Diva started doing drag at Colby's under the name "Baby D!" She modeled herself after her ultimate drag idol - DIVINE. Rusty took one look at her and knew who she was. "Glad to see you finally took my advice sweetie! You look as good as the old girl herself use to!" she told Diva. Diva spent the next few years doing talent shows and appearing as often as she could in drag just for the fun of it. Pepsi, Chris Edwards, Christopher Peterson and Georgie Girl all told her she had what it took to be a great Drag Queen in Toronto. Diva made many friends among the old and new Queens in the city. She was good friends with Amanda from the Fabulous Freeks, they both once lived in Brampton and had been friends there as well. In 1996 Diva worked for a local Social Recreational program for consumer/survivor's of the mental health system and during her time there she helped raise approximately $2500 for their Christmas party in donated goods and presents for the clients. 1998 moved to London and took some time away from performing on stage, but every now and then ventured out in Drag. Mostly to friends homes for little get togethers and parties. She helped raise funds in 1999 for the homeless shelter for men in London. Diva has always found time to help those less fortunate then others. In spring of 2000 Diva decided it was time to get back to Maritime roots and move east. She decided on Halifax mostly because he was very close to the Ocean and she had heard it was the gay mecca of the east coast. She has never regretted moving here, and loves the city so much even when family beg her to return to Ontario she refuses. Since starting to perform in Drag in Halifax she has entered a few pageants most notably Queen of Diamonds 2004...where she was elevated to Princess to the House of Diamonds in the spring of 2004. Her drag mother in Halifax is one of the most well known Queens there - Mz. Vicki and Diva can be found performing at fundraisers for Manna for Health as well as the Charities for The Imperial Barony of Halifax. Diva while known for being a bit of a bitch, is very approachable and loves to meet new people especially fans! lol So walk up to her and say hi sometime. |
