DIVA DOGS: Safe Dogs |
|||||||||
The Safe Dogs Program is designed to make our beloved pooches safe in the environment that surrounds them. There are too many accounts of the family dog racing out an open door, running into the street and getting killed by an oncoming vehicle. We train our children to respect the road, cars, and not to eat things off of the ground - so why not proof our dogs against these things as well? If you have provided your dog with a good foundation in obedience training, why not take it one step further and have a totally Safe Dog! The following list descibes some of the safety training I provide to clients and their pooches. DOOR-DASHING: Teaches dogs who are prone to dashing out an open door - be it a gate, front door, or car door - to wait calmly & quietly at the door until released through. CAR ETTIQUETTE: Teaches dogs how to safely ride in a car without ricochetting off the windows. If you do not restrain your dog (crate/seatbelt) while in the car, they can be taught how to get in, lay down, and not move around until you reach your destination. Proper car exits will be trained so your dog does not jump out of the car and start running. CURB TRAINING: Teaches dogs how to automatically stop & sit at each and every corner (or curb) until released across - on & off leash. STREET PROOFING: Teaches the dog how to discriminate between roads, sidewalks, grass to gravel. We teach the dog that the road is HOT! and not to go near it until given permission to cross or step across that invisible barrier. It's only safe when I say it's safe! POISON PROOFING: Teaches dogs not to mooch from strangers or scavenge food off of the ground. Substances such as antifreeze, rat poison, even other animal's excrement can make your dog ill (or dead). We will teach the dog how to leave all of these 'yummies' alone and only take something when given permission. CAR PROOFING: Teaches dogs that moving vehicles are dangerous. We will teach the dog how to jump back every time a car is headed towards it. Dogs with high prey drive (border collies, shepherds, rotties, ect.) who like to chase cars can be taught that this is an inappropriate behavior. |
