The Goo Goo Dolls started out in 1986 in Buffalo, New York. John had been playing in a band with Robby's cousin, but John dropped that band and started one with Robby and drummer George Tutuska. Their first cd was "Goo Goo Dolls", their second "Jed", then "Hold me Up" then "Superstar Carwash" which featured 'We Are the Normal' , co-written by Paul Westerberg. In 1995, the Goo Goo Dolls finally had their break with 'Name' from "A Boy Named Goo" which preceded "Dizzy up the Girl" and the newly released "Gutterflower." Also in 1995, the Goo Goo Dolls kicked out George Tutuska and got Mike Malinin....although Mike wasn't officially a Goo Goo Doll until 1998.
"I think the names of bands sort of become ok once people get to know the bands. I mean, there's all sorts of silly names floating out there that you dont really think are silly when you're saying them. What do people think about the Beatles? You know, it's a pretty silly name if you really think about it." - Mike Malinin
"I find myself being exactly who I am at the moment when I pickup a guitar." - John Rzeznik
"We're been a band since 1986, and you can really drive yourself crazy by having your goal be for you to be huge, you know. If it doesnt happen you're miserable constantly, and that's no way to go through life." - Robby Takac
