WOKING COLLEGE "B" TEAM FOOTBALL |
|||||||
Yes, for those who enjoy their football, but are not good enough to make the "A" team, the Woking College "B" team offers a chance to the slightly-less-skilled-at-football to show their pride for Woking College!! (No offence is intended to those who turned out for the "B" team who considers themselves a good football player - coz there is some talent there...) Anyway, on a bitterly cold, yet bright Wednesday afternoon, on 11th January 2006, the Woking "B" Team (Previously known as the "Buzzy Bees" due to their yellow and black hooped jerseys) turned out to play a home game against the Esher College "B" Team. But this was no ordinary college "B" Team game, no, this was DJ Wittzy's debut! (Infact it was your typical "B" Team game, my debut didn't really make the game any more special...). Yeh, so the Woking players, proudly sporting their blue T-shirts with white sleeves (similar to Ipswich Town or Macclesfield Town, and nothing like Buzzy Bees) and black shorts and black socks, lined up to take on our Esher opponents, who ironically were dressed like Buzzy Bees! The game kicked off at something like 2:30pm, but within about 2 minutes Woking had fallen behind, and things got worse as the away side added a two further goals before the midway-point in the first half. 0-3 down, but not quite out, as Matt Bolt won a penalty (which really wasn't a penalty at all) and converted the chance to reduce the deficit. And as the first half grew to a close, Woking's confidence rose and we began to attack more. So, half-time, Woking 1-3 Esher. Realistically, we knew that getting a result other than a loss was unlikely, but there was always hope. But the second half saw two changes to the line-up, one of which included DJ Wittzy replacing the departing Pavin'. Things started poorly for Woking in the second half, as Esher increased their lead to 4-1, and when Captain Smurf planted a beautifully misjudged header over the enormous Macey in our goal, we knew we were in for a spanking. Fortunately, the superb Smurf o.g. didn't count because of an offside decision, but let's give credit where it's due - Smurf managed the almost impossible task of lobbing 'keeper Macey and putting the ball in the net! However, Esher put the game beyond all doubt when they stormed into an 8-1 lead midway through the second period, and their total would have been more like 15 at this stage, had their attackers not been caught offside on numerous occasions. But Woking still tried to attack, and although we found clear-cut chances reasonably hard to come by (Duey's excellent diving header which went narrowly wide was probably our best effort in the second half up to this point), Wellman won the ball on the left-hand side of the Esher penalty area, and the ball fell kindly to DJ Wittzy - I managed to squeeze in a shot as I slipped over on the damp and very muddy surface, and incredibly, beat the Esher 'keeper and saw the ball nestle in the corner of their goal!!! The small Woking support went wild!!! (just like they had done on several previous occasions when they witnessed Jim's fancy footwork on the ball). That had done little to change the outcome of the game - it made the score something like 2-10, but unfortunately for me, before I could get up to my feet, my fellow teammates jumped on top of me in a mass bundle... and landed on my ear (that was painful)........... Anyway, as full time drew closer, Woking pressed in search of another goal - even goalie Macey came up for a corner(!), and as a result, huge gaps were left at the back, enabling Esher to add further goals to their already sizeable advantage. They had the ball in the Woking net so many times that we lost count of how many they had scored - I think the final score was Woking 2 Esher 18..... I think.... Definitely the best "B" Team game ever!!! Only at Woking will you see the other team have about 8 goals disallowed for offside, our 'keeper come up for a corner when there's still ten minutes to go and we're losing heavily, Jim's fancy footwork, and not forgetting Charles' fantastic support on the touchline... Apparently, I'm now second highest goalscorer with 1 goal, Matt Bolt is our leading scorer with 2. FANTASTIC!! |
