The Smooth Fox Terrier needs lots of attention and things to do.  They are very intelligent dogs and can think their way into lots of trouble.  Strong and hearty, they are on the go much of the day. Some dogs left alone all day will sleep and await your return.  Most Fox Terriers will play. They can be much like a small four year old child.  That's with all the good and bad that goes with that!

The Fox Terrier does best in a home with someone home most of the time. If you can't be there during the day you must plan for activities for your dog.  Many boarding kennels will offer a day care service. Perhaps a friend or neighbor can come over and play with your dog and spend time with it during the time you are gone.  As the Fox Terrier will run at any opportunity if it sees something to chase, you must provide a secure fenced yard, at least 5 feet high.  Gates that are securely closed all the time.  Do not leave a Fox Terrier in a yard that a service person had access to, such as a meter reader or gardener.

The Smooth Fox Terrier is an easy care dog.  A bath once a month and good brushing will keep them up.  They can have more work done on them if you wish to have a groomer do that for you.

Fox Terriers are quite healthy and will rarely need vet attention. However, be sure to keep annual checkup's. All pet Fox Terriers should be spayed and neutered for their health and safety. They want to be with their owners and that's usually in the house on the couch with you!

They make great bed warmer's too and love to sleep with a member of the family.  Be sure you want a house dog before getting a Smooth Fox Terrier. If they are left outside all the time, you will have a very unhappy and possibly a destructive dog and it is terribly unfair to the dog.  There are other breeds that can handle living outdoors, the Smooth Fox Terrier is not one of them.
